Tower Foundations, Access Roads, Grounding Systems
Gap Filler Radar Stations, Various

Twenty-five (25) contracts had been awarded at the time construction of the Gap Filler Radar Stations was terminated due to the austerity programme. On the attached appendix is a summary of the present status of the tower foundations, access roads and electrical grounding systems. There are fifteen (15) standard tower foundations completed but due to road conditions, it is recommended that the towers be erected on only thirteen (13) of them. There are seven (7) forestry tower foundations completed and it is agreed that the towers may be erected on all of them.

In connection with the Joint Radar & Forestry Tower at Atikokan, and due to circumstances unknown to this Headquarters and Defence Construction (1951) Limited, the existing forestry tower has been dismantled and moved from the site. The Dept of Lands and Forests possibly made this decision on the basis of progress being made on the site before the austerity programme took effect. They are now anxious to know whether the Joint Radar & Forestry Tower will be erected before the beginning of the fire protection season, about 1 May 63, as this site is located in one of the highest fire danger areas in the province.
