Storage of Diesel Alternator Sets
Gap Filler Radar Stations Timmins, Tobermory, Nicolet, St Joseph

Site visits by CCE/Inspectors have disclosed that the diesel alternator sets delivered by Sheridan Equipment Ltd to Timmins, Tobernory, Nicolet and St Joseph are in the following conditions:

  1. Timmins

Completely installed except for connection to commercial power. This situation incudes the diesel engine and alternator, exhaust system, ventiliating system, fuel oil system and control panel.

  2. Tobermory & Nicolet

Diesel alternator sets are approximately in position on floor but not connected to any other equipment. Exhaust, ventilating and fuel oil equipment and control panel are in the building but not in place.

  3. St Joseph

In temporary storage at No 58D Moncton.

It was originally planned on shipping the above four diesel alternator sets to Picton for temporary storage with the remaining 59 sets, which will be inhibited by Sheridan Equipment Ltd. In view of the situation described in para 1(a), (b) and (c) and the fact that the temporary storage at Picton would be an unheated building, it has been decided to inhibt the four units where they are and leaving them in the unheated Power and Accommodation Building, which would be no different from the anticipated condition at Picton. This alternative method will eliminate the cost of transportation from the site to Picton and return and also the possiblity of damage during such movement.

The only risk which be run under this alternative method would be damage resulting from break-in but every precaution is being taken to close all openings in the Steelox buildings from the inside and outside. The Steelox buildings themselves are secure exept for the jimming of the Yale locks, but with an inspection by ADCHQ or designaged ADC station in the fall and spring, this risk is considered acceptable.

Sheridan Equipment Ltd have advised that the batteries were shipped charged, so there will be no problem in starting the diesel engine at Timmins, except for fuel supply. At Tobermory and Nicolet, it will be necessary to set up a temporary exhaust system and provide fuel oil supply in order to run the engine up to operating temperature. Each alternator is 100 KW, 120/208 volts.
