OFFICE OF THE DEPUTY MINISTER OF NATIONAL DEFENCE

January 17, 1964

MEMORANDUM

CGE (Prop)

Hereunder may be found extracts from a letter received in the office of the Associate Minister regarding the Gap Filler Site at Summerville, Queens County, NS.

Would you please look into the questions raised and advise, as soon as possible, what reply may be made to this inquiry.

"Some time ago arrangements were made with the owners of the land to do some preliminary work in connection with the establishment of the above project. It is understood that a road was constructed, trees cut down and a high wire fence erected. Since that time there have been no further developments and one of the owners of the land – Mr. Murray Lawson – states that the land has not been finally acquired and he has not received compensation.

Would you be kind enough to have enquiries made as to whether the department intends to proceed with the project and, in any case, when a settlement will be made with the owners of the land. I have also been asked to enquire whether the fence could be made available to one of the local cemeteries should the project be abandoned."
