Deputy Minister,
Department of Transport,
Ottawa, Ontario.

Dear Sir:

Re: Surveys - Gap Filler Sites

Please refer to your letter of 19 January, 1960, file 26-10-7, to which was attached a copy of an inquiry by the Abitibi Power and Paper Company, Limited, concerning reimbursement for any trees cut during our survey and soil testing operations at Marten River and Nipigon, Ontario, within the areas licensed to the company.

This question of reimbursement for stumpage, royalty and scaling charges have been the subject of earlier correspondence between our offices, your files 26-10-7 and 1653-745, and I consider that we must accept responsibility in all cases for the felling of trees by our consultants. As I suggested in my letter of 21 January, 1960, file 10-80/5 TD 0018, the lumber companies should submit their invoices covering such charges so that following certification payment may be made against the general financial encumbrance held by your department.

I would be pleased if you would let me know as soon as possible whether you concur in this arrangement.

Yours sincerely,

for Deputy Minister
