APPENDIX "A" TO:

10-36-80/5 (JDPG) of 14 Oct 60

DESIGN CRITERIA
FOR
STANDARD BUILDING AND TOWER FOUNDATIONS
GAP FILLER RADAR STATIONS - GENERAL

  1. RADAR BUILDING

    1. The size of the radar building has been agreed upon by USAF and RCAF/CTel as 28' x 48'. It will have no partitions, no windows, no trenches or openings in the floor, one single door, one double door, openings for wave guide, radar and telephone cables, heat exchanger, air intake and filter box for radar equipment and ventilating fans for building.

    2. The foundation of the building may be of two types to suit site conditions. On normal ground and level sites, the standard perimeter wall and slab on fill may be used. On rocky and irregular sites, it is suggested that concrete piers and laminated floor be used.

    3. The final layout of the radar equipment is not yet available, but it is anticipated that the maximum weight of the equipment will be 250 lbs per sq ft, next highest will be 180 lbs and the majority under 150 lbs.

    4. The design of the building should provide for the hanging of four lines of cable ladders, two transverse and two longitudinally, the weight of which will be advised ASAP. The ceiling area does not have to be enclosed, provided the roof panels are insulated.

    5. The estimated electrical requirement for electronic equipment is 60 KW at 120/208 volts +/- 10 volts, 3 phase, 4 wire, 60 cycles +/- 2 cycles.

    6. The heating of the radar building will be by the dissipated heat from the electronic equipment and electric heaters.

    7. A preliminary set of drawings ROZ-1028 sheets 1 to 7, showing the original layout of the radar equipment and tower design (but subject to modification) is attached for use as a guide as to size and location of doors but no details as to openings, etc. are to be used until confirmed by Eng-5-5. This layout is based on the use of an Armco type building but can be replaced by a Robertson-Irwin type building.

  2. POWER AND ACCOMMODATION BUILDING (for 1 APU)

    1. The size of this building may be 24' x 32'. It will have one partition, no windows, no trenches or openings in the floor, one single door, one double door, openings for diesel generator and furnace and ventilating fan for building.

    2. The foundation of the building will have to be redesigned to support the diesel generator and apply to both normal and rocky sites.

    3. The heating of the building may be by an oil fired furnace and hot air ducts.

    4. The diesel generator and auxiliary equipment will have to be designed for complete monitoring by the parent radar station.

    5. The accommodation portion of the building shall provide for emergency quarters for four men, (2 double bunks), cooking and washing facilities, refrigerator, chemical toilet or equal.

    6. The water supply (except for fresh water) may be provided by eavestroughs and storage tank located under the floor. A pressure pump and small fire hose should be provided.

  3. POWER AND ACCOMMODATION BUILDING (for 2 or 3 APUs)

    1. The size of this building may be 24' x 48'. It will have similar facilities as listed above for 1 APU building.

  4. GARAGE (for SNOWMOBILE)

    1. The purpose of this building will be for the storage of a snowmobile or other similar type of vehicle at the beginning of the access road at sites which will have difficult access during the winter.

    2. The size of this building may be 12' x 24'. It should be of metal construction, but will not require heat nor electricity.

  5. WELL HOUSE (for FRESH WATER SUPPLY)

    1. The purpose of this building will be for the protection of a well or intake for the supply of fresh water at any convenient point on the access road.

    2. The size of this building may be 8' x 8'. It should be of metal construction and may or may not include pumping equipment.

  6. FOUNDATION FOR STD RADAR TOWER

    1. The design of the Std Radar Tower has been prepared by the USAF and the tower will be fabricated and supplied by USA sources. The design of the foundation for the tower has been prepared by the USAF but will have to be site adapted by our consultants. It is considered that the standard design should be checked and approved by DArchC/Arch-4 before being used by our consultants.

    2. This standard radar tower will be 75 ft high, 3-legged, open construction, on a 20 ft triangular base, with a rigid radome of the top.

  7. FOUNDATION FOR JOINT RADAR AND FORESTRY TOWER

    1. The above note for the Std Radar Tower will also apply for the Joint Radar and Forestry Tower.

    2. This special tower will be either 75 ft or 100 ft high, 4-legged, open construction, on a 20 ft square base, with a rigid radome on the top and Fire Lookout Cabin below the radome.

  8. FUEL OIL STORAGE SYSTEM

    1. Two standard fuel oil storage systems should be designed based on a 5,000 gallon tank at readily accessible sites and a 10,000 gallon tank at remote sites and where three diesel generators will be used.

  9. WATER SYSTEM

    1. The water system shall be designed as an integral part of the standard power and accommodation buildings as described in paras 2 and 3.

  10. SEWAGE DISPOSAL SYSTEM

    1. The sewage disposal system shall be designed as an integral part of the standard power and accommodation buildings as described in paras 2 and 3.

  11. CHAIN LINK SECURITY FENCE

    1. The standard design of a 7 ft chain link security fence including 3 strands of barbed wire should be provided for the use of our consultants in site adaptation.
