Re: Final Field Survey, Soil Investigation,
Design, Specifications & Estimates
Gap Filler Radar Stations, Northwestern Ontario

Dear Sirs:

Approval having now been granted for the construction of certain of the Gap Filler Radar Stations, we wish to advise that you will be receiving a letter from Defence Construction (1951) Limited, increasing the value of your existing contract and authorizing you to proceed with the final design as soon as you have been briefed by the RCAF.

The briefing will be made during a visit to your office by the Project Officer, Mr WR Alexander, on a date to be mutually agreed upon, at which time a review will be made of all field data available.

Owing to a change in the siting criteria of these stations, a number of them have had to be relocated and hence the DCL letters will only refer to those on which further work will be done at this time. Generally speaking, it is proposed that the design of the standard buildings and tower foundations be completed by AFHQ and the site adaptation and services by the consultant before 28 February 1961, in order to provide for a spring tender call and summer construction.

Details of the foundation for the standard buildings and tower will not be available for a short time, but in the meantime, it is requested that all field survey notes be plotted on the two plans with scales 1" - 50' and 1" - 200' and on the access road plan and profile with scales 1" - 100' H and 1" - 10' V. On a paper sepia of these plans and profile, it is requested that the proposed location and grades of the access road are to be plotted. Two prints of each plan and profile are to be immediately submitted to AFHQ for approval in principle before design work is continued. The two plans with scales 1" - 50' and 1' - 200' shall be drawn on linen or equivalent but the access road plan and profile may be drawn on paper. The access road plan and profile shall indicate all topographical and soil conditions along the route.

Separate instructions will be issued for individual stations pertaining to additional field survey, possible soil investigation and special problems.
