Design Criteria for Radar Building & Towers
Gap Filler Radar Stations, General

The following is a summary of a discussion held on 26 Oct 60 between F/L H Van Buren and Mr S Signore of ATSC and Mr WR Alexander of CCE regarding design criteria for radar building and tower and presently planned BODs for the Gap Filler Radar Stations, General.

TB approval has been received for the construction of 38 stations, of which only the 22 approved sites can be proceeded with at this time. It is proposed that these sites will be issued to DCL on the following schedule - 13 before 31 Mar 61, 8 before Apr 61, and 1 before 31 Aug 61. It is further proposed that the BODs for these sites will be as follows: 6 before 31 Oct 61, and 6 before 31 Dec 61. The BODs for the balance of the 45 sites will be in 1962 and tentatively set down as follows - 6 in Aug, 10 in Oct, 8 in Nov and 9 in Dec.

As the 45 sites fall into 3 categories, easy, fair and difficult and since it will be impossible (without extraordinary procedures) to work at the fair and difficult sites during the months of Jan to Apr, it is proposed to give priority to hte construction of the foundations for the tower and provide ATSC with BODs for both the tower and the buildings. In this way, the Telecom contractor will be able to proced with the erection of the tower while the CE contractor is completing the buildings.

In order for the design of the radar building to commence immediately, it is requested that the following information be confirmed ASAP:

  1. Maximum weight of radar equipment to be installed in the building - 250 PSF.

  2. Heat exchanger will be part of Telecom equipment and will not change in size.

  3. Air intake louvres will be part of CE equipment and will not change in size.

Further, it is requested that it be confirmed ASAP that RCAF will be providing the diesel generators and control equipment, as there appears to be some confliction between the opinion held at CCE and at GEEIA. Also, it is requested that arrangements be made with GEEIA for CCE to discuss the electrical system in general and the control system for the diesel generators in particular. It is also desired to clarify the distinction between reliable and unreliable commercial power and the requirement of one, two or three diesel generators.
