Design Criteria - Radar Bldg and Power Bldg
Gap Filler Radar Stations - General

Reference your memorandum 10-36-80/5 (JDPG) re meeting held 18 Nov 60.

To facilitate siting of towers and buildings, site heights may be reduced by any amount up to a maximum of 10 feet. Should there be a need to exceed the 10 foot maximum at any site, resolution and authority will be provided by the ATSC staff.

The number of diesel power generating engines which are required at each site should follow the policy which is normal for similar RCAF installations. More specifically, at sites where there is commercial power only 1 diesel generator will be installed as an APU back-up. At sites where there is no commercial power, 2 power units will be installed and not 3 as in policy for USAF installations. The decision for 1 unit at sites with commercial power and 2 units sites with no commercial power is based on the understanding between this staff and CCE staff that the serviceability of such plants may be expected to have a reliability in excess of 99%. This decision was coordinated with DRDP and DADSI.

The requirement for diesel generator remote control and signal systems as incorporated in USAF installations, shall be limited to an indication only that a transfer has taken place between the commercial power source and the APU or in the 2 engines plants between engine 1 and engine 2.

As discussed it is confirmed that emergency type living space shall be provided in the radar buildings as detailed your para 6. The space so provided should be screened from the radar equipment by a partition.
