Gap Filler Radar Stations

Following a meeting with S/L R Fletcher and Mr Shannon Carey of GEEIA on 22 and 23 Sep 59, an inquiry was directed to Armco Drainage & Metal Porducts for recommendations as to the best possible solution of providing the USAF design layout in Steelox construction.

In order to expediate a decision, the following information is being forwarded as the result of further telephone calls to Armco. Two possible solutions, using the multiple arrangement (ie two Steelox buildings side by side) and the lean-to arrangement were not recommended by Armco due to the possiblity of leakage caused by heavy snow loads. Armco did recomend the T-arrangement with a new design for the connecting gulleys. This arrangement could provide three alternatives for the common wall between the Radar Room and the Power Room, namely, one steelox wall backed by fireproof material, two steelox walls with insulation between them, or no steelox wall but a fire wall of concrete block or equivalent.

The above three alternatives would be practical and economical on the few sites that are fairly level, but since a requirement does exist on some sites to completely separate the two rooms, it would now appear more logical to design them as self contained units which could be sited 5 ft, 100 ft or 500 ft apart. The 5 foot separation could be provided with a covered breezeway with entrances to the two buildings. This arrangement would be most practical and economical for Canadian sites and would be standard except for the length of power cable between the two units. The two units can be accommodated in Steelox buildings 20, 24 or 28 ft wide depending upon the amount of equipment to be installed in each building.

The USAF design layout and the requirement for the building and tower to be not separated by more than 10 feet and at the same elevation would result in CE costs in excess of the cost of redesigning a portion of the equipment layout.
