Deputy Minister,
Department of Transport
Ottawa 4, Ontario

Attention: Real Estate Division

Dear Sir:

Re: Acquisition of Property
Gap Filler Programme

Would you please refer to my letter of even file dated 10 and 30 August last year regarding the land acquisition phase of the department's Gap Filler Programme.

I have now been informed that difficulties in arranging for the supply of the radar equipment to be used at these installations will not be resolved until at least January of next year. Therefore, while the property for the 25 sites which had reached varying stages of completion prior to last year's deferment order must still be acquired to protect our investment, it is not likely that work on the remaining stations, those 20 listed as Group "B" with our letter 10 August, 1962, will commence before mid-1964. In this regard, would you please delete Eaglet River from the list as it has been taken out of the programme. Insofar as the 19 sites of Group "B" are concerned, I would be pleased if you would instruct your agents to try to obtain options valid until 31 December, 1964, ie, for one year longer than we originally requested.

I realize that these changes in our requirements make extra work for you and your regional offices and can only assure you that we will attempt to keep you informed of all developments concerning the property acquisition phase. You may wish to advise your managers in Toronto and Montreal that, for the present at least, negotiations for the options on the lands making up the 19 sites may be conducted on a routine basis.

Yours sincerely,

(EB Armstrong)
Deputy Minister
