Maintenance of Access Roads
Gap Filler Radar Stations Various

At the time of terminating the contracts for various Gap Filler Radar Stations due to the austerity programme, the access roads were completed and taken over by DCL 51s and 54s. Contracts will have to be arranged for the completion of the buildings and other services but it is considered that the maintenance of the access roads should now be the command's responsibility. Assuming that financial authority will be received early in 1963 for the completion of the Gap Filler programme, the maintenance contracts will have to be effective in the spring of 1963. Some of these access roads may require maintenance work before the general contractors can reach the site in order to complete the buildings. The major problem which may be experienced on these roads is the erosion due to heavy rains on the steep grades.

The access roads are completed on the following sites:

Algonquin Park, Ont
Atikokan, Ont
Belleterre, Que
Biscotasing, Ont
Elliot Lake, Ont
Lac Ste Marie, Que
Oba, Ont
Scotch Settlement, NB
St Joseph, NS
Summerville Centre
Timmins, Ont
Tobermory, Ont
Todd Mtn, NB
Westport, Ont

No access roads are involved but the loop roads at the building area are completed at the following sites:

Chapleau, Ont
Nicolet, Que

If the responsibility for maintenance will be accepted by the command, it will considerably simplify the preparation of plans and specifications for the completion of these projects.

May this Directorate be advised of the decision on the matter as soon as possible.
