Access Roads
Gap Filler Radar Stations

On 5 Dec 62 Lt Col RI Choate and Mr WR Alexander attended a meeting at DCL in Mr L Briden's office attended by Messrs R Cooke, J Stitt and T Kelly, for the purpose of discussing the proposals set forth in your memorandum of 27 Nov 62.

DCL agreed in principle with the suggestion of calling lump sum tenders for the construction of access roads to the Gap Filler Radar Stations, but it was felt that some definite controls would be necessary in order to assure that we would get something usable for our money and avoid an excessive number of changes. It was suggested that these controls should include the following items:

  1. Maximum grade - 15%

  2. Minimum horizontal radius - 100 ft

  3. Minimum vertical radius - 100 ft

  4. Minimum width - 10 ft plus two 3 ft shoulder

  5. Minimum clearance - 40 ft

  6. Definite point of start of road

  7. Usable by tracked vehicle

  8. Typical cross-section showing minimum ditches and minimum depth of granular fill over rock

  9. Culverts to be located by DCL project engineer and paid for as an extra at unit price bid.
