Re: Progress Report No 4
Maritime Gap Filler Stations

Dear Sir:

Further to our Progress Report No 3 dated 25 November 1959 enclosed please find a Progress Report covering work completed to 30 January 1960

  1. Site Reconnaissance, Field Survey, Field Survey Report and all Preliminary Engineering Services completed for the following sites:

    New Yarmouth, Nova Scotia
    Todd Mountain, New Brunswick
    St Joseph, Nova Scotia
    Alder River, Nova Scotia
    Mount Carleton, New Brunswick
    Les Etroits, New Brunswick

  2. Site Reconnaissance, Reconnaissance Report and Interim Construction Estimate.

    Scotch Settlement No 2

There has been no field work carried out with regards to Springton No 2. Weather permitting field work will be started in early April.

With regards to Progress Claim No 4 it will be noted that field survey expenditures for the six completed sites are slightly in excess of the amounts estimated in our letter of 11 December 1959. These minor over-expenditures were due to additional information requested by RCAF on the various reports, additional work required in producing Mount Carleton and Les Etroits reports and the rental of equipment and vehicle which was overlooked in our summary. However, no increase in the individual estimates on the six completed sites is required if the following suggestion is accepted.

  1. As outlined in our letter of 18 January 1960 Scotch Settlement No 2 requires less field work survey time than Scotch Settlement No 1. The estimated cost of preliminary engineering services is $2,600.00 as compared to an authorized expenditure of $3,347.00. Since work was carried out on the original site it is reasonable to apply a portion of the general charges to this site. By applying $350.00 of the total general account of $4,616.00 to this site, the remainder of the general can be distributed among the six approved sites and still be within the individual estimate. With regars to Scotch Settlement No 2 there will still be an amount of $390.00 for unforeseen expenditures.

As noted in your letters charges to the general account are being kept to a minimum in all future work.

Sincerely yours,

WH CRANDALL & ASSOCIATES
