It is now intended to defer the completion of the Gap Filler Radar Programme for one year. DCL and DDP are being advised to terminate existing contracts at the most logical stage in order to protect our present investment but at the same time result in the maximum savings in funds.

Twenty-five contracts have been awarded. At twelve sites the steelox buildings have been erected and these sites will probably be completed. At seven sites considerable work had been done on building and tower foundations, access roads, clearing and grubbing but these sites will be stopped with or without partial building erections. At six sites some work has been done on building and tower foundations, access roads, clearing and grubbing but the steelox buildings have not been shipped and hence these sites will be stopped without any building erection.

In view of the fact that at all twenty-five sites the original condition of the land has been disturbed, it will be necessary to complete land negotiation for both the site and the access road. Where forestry towers exist, it is suggested that the provinces and companies be advised of the proposed deferment and that their towers will not have to be dismantled until further notice. When use of private or logging roads are involved, it is suggested that an abbreviated agreement be made covering construction to date and occasional visits for care and maintenance (if the buildings have been erected).

At all other sites, where no contract has been awarded and hence no construction has been done, it is requested that permissions to enter and options to sell be extended for one year (say, to 1 Sep 63), at which time the matter could again be reviewed.
