Re: Gap Filler Radar Station, etc -
La Tuque, Que

Report on the status of the work performed on the above noted project as of Aug 3rd/62.

  1. Concrete foundation walls of both buildings, concrete Tower Foundations, 2,000 gals Tank concrete supports, Generator concrete bases (except masterplate finish on top) are all poured except for the floor slabs of both buildings - Radar & Power and Accommodation.

  2. Access Road from 19.2 mile road to the site is completed, except for some gravelling, some rock excavation to improve ditching and some cleaning. It is presently in a good condition.

  3. Loop road around buildings is all shaped up to the top of sub-base.

  4. Area inside the loop road is all backfilled.

  5. Close cutting around building area is all done. On the interior edge of the circular fire break, cleaning of branches is not completed because the representative of the St Maurice Fire Protective Association has not allow their burning out. They would have been covered with adjacent soil.

  6. Close cutting on the 19.2 mile road is done on a 10 mile length. The remaining section has not yet been close cutted because the total acreage already (following requirements of Dwgs) is higher than the quantities of the Specifications. We were waiting instructions from the Air Force to resume the close cutting and increase the specified erroneous quantities. As burning of the branches was forbidden, the Contractor was to throw them in depressions along the edge of the 19.2 mile road and covered them with excavation material from ditching.

  7. Clearing, Grubbing and Grading is all done.

  8. Brush control, Soil Sterilization, respreading and rough grading have not been started.

  9. All material for the Security Fencing is on site but not installed.

  10. Culverts have been installed on the new Access Road to the Site and on some sections of the 19.2 mile road. Remaining quantities specified are on site and quite a number of pipe sections have been delivered at location where culverts would have been installed.

  11. The first 1.4 mile of the 19.2 mile road has been redone completely. Gravel and backfill have been hauled at some other spots, the worst ones. There is still a lot of work to be done on that road, as ditching, rock excavation, backfilling and gravelling. The extra quantities requested were for that purpose.

  12. The steel ferry boat supplied by the Contractor (requested to be able to cross over a 20-ton truck as per instructions of AFHQ) is in operation since the past two months.

  13. Roughing in of plumbing and electrical (before pouring of floor slabs) is done in both buildings.

  14. Heating and Ventilating Materials is practically all on site.

  15. Steelox components for both buildings (part supplied by AMC and part supplied by Contractor) are on site.

  16. 2,000 gals Tank is on site near its supports

  17. 50,000 gals steel tank is being erected in the field because it was impossible to haul it to site in one piece or in three due to sinuosities of the 19.2 road.

Presently, the bottom is in place and nearly all welded, 4/5th of the side panels are in place either welded throughout at some joints or task welded at other ones. This shall be completed and prime coated.

A Bourbeau,
Project Insp.
