Dear Sir:

Re: Property Acquisition -
Proposed Gap Filler Site, Gowganda, Ont
Your file: 26-10-7 (RE)

Please refer to your letter of 1 August, 1961, in which you advised this office of the existence of a number of mining claims in the area selected as the location of a Gap Filler site near Gowganda, Ontario.

In accordance with our normal practice we would prefer to take the fee simple covering surface and sub-surface rights on this and similar properties should the field surveys and soil investigations prove that the site is suitable for our purposes. The request by the Chief Mining Recorder to have the area in which we are interested pinpointed is not understood as all available information was included in the descriptions of the property accompanying our letter of 28 March, 1961. On completion of the field surveys you will be requested to open negotiations with view to purchasing the property involved and, at that time, location and property plans of the Gowganda Gap Filler site will be provided. This department will be guided by your recommendations in the matter of taking surface and sub-surface rights or settling for only the surface.

I would be pleased if you would have your agents continue their negotiations with the Ontario Department of Mines on the basis of the information orginally provided, bearing in mind that only if the present field surveys prove the site to be satisfactory will we be requesting acquisition of the parcels involved.

Your sincerely,

(EB Armstrong)
Deputy Minister
