56-6684
Article 351

Delivered to Groom Lake on 18 May 1956. Transferred to Det A at Giebelstadt West Germany in October 1957 from where it flew one overflight and one peripheral ELINT flight to the Kola Peninsula region of the USSR.

This aircraft operated as Civil N804X, to a U-2C, and was eventually destroyed in a flying accident.

This U-2 was the third CIA aircraft equipped with APQ-56 side-looking radar. Possibly retained at test site throughout 1956. Converted to Project Rainbow radar-stealthy configuration in early 1957 and deployed in July to Det B, which employed it on USSR flights from Lahore during August.

56-6684 was converted into a U-2C by July 1959. It was one of the first two U-2 aircraft delivered to Taiwan in July 1960.

This aircraft crashed on 19 March 1961 at Toayuan AB, Taiwan, during a night flight training mission. The aircraft veered off the runway and burned killing ROCAF pilot Yao Hua Chih.
