Situation:

Exercise Vigilant is a United Kingdom Air Defence Exercise sponsored by RAF Fighter Command to practice the Air Defences of the United Kingdom under the conditions anticipated in the initial stage of a global war. This practice is to be achieved by subjecting the defences of three main attacks, two by day and one by night in each 24 hours during the period 25 through 27 May. 28 May will be held in reserve in the event of a 24 hour weather postponement.

Enemy Forces:

RAF Fighter Command. Early Warning information will be supplied to RAF Fighter Command by Type 80 Radars at Goch, Jevers and Metz and by C&R units in Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Holland and Belgium.

Attachments and Detachments: - Nil.

Mission:

To carry out high level raids against the United Kingdom Air Defence Organization.

Execution:

General: - Raids against the United Kingdom will originate from the Northwest, North, Northeast, East, Southeast and South.

Raid Plan: - Sections of 2 Sabre, and single CF-100 aircraft will fly missions as detailed in Annex 1.

Radar Surveillance: - Each section leader will contact Yellowjack on Wing Common frequency after take-off from home base. Yellowjack will follow the raid as far as possible. Raid leaders will contact Yellowjack on Wing Common frequency as soon as possible after leaving targets and Yellowjack will then monitor the return flights to home base. IFF will be used as directed by Yellowjack, or in emergency.

Postponement or Cancellation:

Postponement: - In the event of adverse weather conditions it may be necessary to postpone one complete 24 hours raiding activity. In this event at least 6 hours warning will be given by telephone and flash signal. Times on time line for postponed raids will be unchanged but 24 hours later; subsequent raids will be flown in their planned sequence (i.e. if it proved necessary to postpone raids planned for Saturday, these raids will be flown on Sunday, Sunday’s raids on Monday, and Monday’s raids on Tuesday).

Cancellation:

Emergency – A complete cancellation of the exercise will be signaled by Air Div COC using the code name "NETHER".

Weather – Cancellation of missions because of adverse weather conditions will be decided by CO’s and passed to Air Div COC, which will, in turn, advise 4 ATAF HQ, telephone 278.

Air Movement: - The regulations for exercise traffic are detailed in Annex 2.

Air Combat and Safety Regulations: - The Combat and Safety Regulations are detailed in Annex 3.

Facilities for Raiding Forces: - Facilities in the UK for raiding forces are shown in Annex 4.

Search and Rescue Facilities: - Search and Rescue facilities, under the direction of the Rescue Co-Ordination Centre, will be provided in the UK.

Administration and Logistics:

Reports – Reports shall be submitted as detailed in Annex 5.

Logistics – Normal.

Command and Signal:

Command – 1 Air Division HQ.

Directing Staff – A Directing Staff will be established in Air Defence Operations Centre, Fighter Command. This Staff will at no time assume power of command over any participating unit.

Command Posts:

4 ATAF – A Command Post will be set up at 4 ATAF HQ, Trier and will operate from 1500Z Friday 24 May to 1700Z Monday 27 May (or 1700Z Tuesday 28 May 57, if the reserve day is required).

1 Air Div – A Duty Ops Officer shall be available through Air Div Switchboard.

Wings – A Duty Ops Officer shall stand by in Wing Ops Rooms from 1500Z Friday 24 May to 1700Z Monday 27 May (or 1700Z Tuesday 28 May 57, if the reserve day is required.)

Signals:

Frequency Channelizations – Normal.

Call Signs – Wing call signs shall be used.
