Memories of Moselle Common Area Control

Moselle Common Area Control (MCAC)

I was an Air Traffic Contoller (GCA trained) employed at the Moselle Common Area Control (MCAC) between 1959 and 1963. The MCAC was situated in an underground casern north west of Metz. There were Canadian Air Force (RCAF), French Air Force (FAF) and American Air Force (USAF) controllers stationed there. The personnel at MCAC provided arrival and departure control for military aircraft in the Moselle area which covered the north east corner of France.

RCAF personnel employed at the MCAC came under the administrative control of 1 Air Division HQ located at Metz. We did, however, enjoy one major "plus" over other RCAF personnel - in that we were able to shop at the American Commisary. I lived in a little village called Ste. Rufinne which was located between Metz and the MCAC.
