2402 Aircraft Control and Warning Unit (Aux) Winnipeg, Manitoba
1 December 1952 to 31 May 1953

This historical record covers the period 1st Dec 1952, until 30th May 1953.

During Dec F/O BTG Macfie transferred to 17 Wing HQ eff 6th, and F/L WH Galpin assumed position of Chief Tech Officer. There were synthetic operations during the month, but no operation exercises due to trade tests coming up Dec 11.

F/O JA Caslake transferred to the Regular Force eff 12 Dec. F/L RA Basson returned from Aircraft Controllers' Course at Tyndall Air Force Base, Panama City, Florida after successfully completing course.

One airwoman remustered, one released, one taken on strength during the month of Dec. Christmas stand down Dec 18 - Jan 4.

On Jan 8 F/O HA Penn was commissioned as Spec FtrC. The unit paraded to see the film "Hawks in the Sun". One airwomen transferred to the Regular Force in Jan.

In Feb F/L RA Basson lectured the U of Manitoba Sqn at Urban HQ in support of their winter training programme. S/L FD Searles and F/L RA Basson attended CO's conference at Edmonton, Alta 7 Feb.

Results of trade tests showed LAC I Streimer, LAC HR Wood, and AW1 J McKenzie successful. Three airmen, one airwoman released, two airmen transferred to 5002 IU (Aux), four airwomen taken on strength in Feb.

Staff visit 1 Mar from TacGp HQ included W/C Delaney, S/L Powers, S/L Garnett and F/L Hermanson. Trade tests were held 22 Mar. During the month three airwomen were taken on strength.

F/O GS Milne was commissioned as a Spec FtrC eff 26 Apr. AW2 P Garnett proceeded on FtrCOp course at Clinton, Ont 15 Apr. Plans being made for Summer Camp 53. On Apr 30 change in nomenclature, 2402 now a Sqn. In Apr G/C Inglis, CO Stn Winnipeg, visited the Sqn. LAC B Sellers departed for Coronation Contingent. F/L GV Hastings experimented with the practicability of using radar for tactical close support; results were forwarded to TacGp HQ. One airwoman taken on strength on transfer in Apr.

On 3 May restricted H/F scheme at Charleswood, Man. Synthetic radar plots passed by W/T on frequency 4860 KC to this Sqn. All operators on parade participated - very successful.

Bombing Control scheme carried out 7 May using Radar and IFF in conjunction with 402 Sqn Mustang a/c - operation successful. S/L Dempsey from AFHQ visited Sqn 10 May. On 21 May S/L V Grant took over command of 2402 AC&WS from S/L FD Searles in a handing-over parade attended by AOC A/C Coleman and his aide, W/C Ganderton, G/C Turner - all visited Sqn after parade.

The Sqn lost the services of F/L JM McMahon and F/L GV Hastings, both of whom left for civilian positions outside the city. F/O RO Hill Accts transferred from 2403 AC&WS Calgary. Results of trade test showed LAC H Loughead, AW1 B Garson and AW1 JI Jensen successful.
