2424 Aircraft Control and Warning Unit Hamilton, Ont.
1 Dec 50 to 13 Apr 52

1 Dec 50 to 1 Jun 51

Although the effective date of the formation of 2424 Aircraft Control and Warning Unit was 1 October 50, the appointment of the Commanding Officer 120067 S/L NB Eaton did not take place until 8 January 51. (Authority: TC Y2517 d/8 January 51). At this time the CO was transferred from 424 (F) Sqn Reserve. It was assumed that Telecommunications personnel would be transferred to 2424 ACWU in the immediate future. On the 15 Jan (TC Authority Y2538) the balance of the personnel were transferred to 2424 ACWU. F/L JA Wilson assumed the duties of adjutant, until such time as a qualified adjutant could be procured to fill the 2424 ACWU Reserve establishment.

The establishment of the ACWU being so vast the primary object of the unit was to obtain as many skilled personnel as possible. Officers already transferred to the ACWU were detailed to form a Recruiting Unit to select and screen applicants.

Air Defense Group Officers visited the unit on several occasions to advise and assist in setting up the "Operations Room".

The first operation in which the ACWU took an active part was Operation Roundup held on the 3rd and 4th of March 51. Since "Operation Roundup" several joint interception exercises have been carried out with London and Toronto Squadron.

A conference was held in Trenton on the 10 February 1951 at 1030 hours to discuss the 1951 Reserve Squadron Summer Camp. Personnel from 2424 ACWU were in attendance and entered into the discussion of Summer Training Reserve and Summer Employment personnel.

The Operations Room in its basic stages is to be ready for instructional and practical training on the 21 July 51, the time when 424 (F) Sqn (Res) and 2424 ACWU return from Summer Camp.

To this date no Officer Commanding of the Support Section has been appointed to 2424 but it is anticipated one will be forthcoming in the immediate future.

On May 29 W/C S Balke, C Tel o, TCHQ, visited the unit to inspect all Unit Telecommunications facilities and discuss personal problems of Station Hamilton and 2424 ACWU in general.
