CONTROL

Control of 2442 AC&W Squadron is exercised by the Group Commander, 12 Air Defence Group through the Commanding Officer, 19 Wing Headquarters (Auxiliary).

FUNCTION

The present function of 2442 AC&W Sqn is:

  1. To train Auxiliary Force personnel in all aspects of aircraft control and warning operations.

  2. Maintain and operate radar and communications facilities as directed by the Group Commander, 12 Air Defence Group.

    NARRATIVE REPORT

    11 - 12 Dec 54

    F/Ls BcBeath, Morgan, Hutchison and Watt proceeded on TD to 757 AC&W Sqn (USAF - Blaine Washington) for controller training.

    4 Jan 55

    F/L T Whittey joined the unit as CTechO, replacing F/O Robinson who had moved to Montreal. P/O L McDonald joined the Sqn as our first Nursing Sister.

    28 - 29 Jan 55

    F/Ls Read & Boyd and F/Os Finlayson and Brown proceeded on TD to 757 AC&W Sqn (USAF) for two days of training.

    30 Jan 55

    A/C Orr, G/C McNab and G/C Northcott inspected the unit facilities and chatted with sqn members.

    20 Feb 55

    P/O ME McPherson joined the Technical Section of the sqn.

    13 Mar 55

    Sqn personnel viewed the TV Series, "War in the Air", a documentary of the Air Forces in World War II. Personnel were permitted to view the film each Sunday for the duration of the series.

    15 Mar 55

    LAW JG Firth, having completed her term of service with the Regular Force, joined 2442 AC&W Sqn for a period of Special Duty in the Sqn Orderly Room.

    3 Apr 55

    S/L Johnson visited the Sqn to review our establishment.

    14 Apr 55

    S/L Sproule and F/O Thomas accepted an invitation to attend a Current Affairs lecture given by Mr W Courtenay, a British War Correspondent.

    22 - 24 Apr 55

    It was deemed advisable that members of 2442 AC&W Sqn be trained so that in an emergency the unit could be mobile at short notice. As facilities for mobilization training are at Abbotsford it was decided to offer a week-end of such training to sqn members. From 22 to 24 April, a total of 30 airmen and airwomen and 10 officers too part in a mobility exercise at Abbotsford.

    29 Apr - 1 May 55

    During this weekend, another 28 airmen and airwomen and 12 officers took part in a mobility exercise at Abbotsford.

    8 May 55

    A Church Parade for 19 Wing (Auxiliary) members was held on this Sunday. 2442 AC&W Sqn attended with one flight each of officers, airwomen, and airmen.

    15 May 55

    A Hand-Over Parade was held at Stn Sea Island with G/C Northcott as Parade Commander handing 19 Wing (Auxiliary) over to W/C Alexander.
