La Macaza, Quebec

1965 – The Ballad of the Bomarc – Bob Merrick

The Ballad of the Bomarc
F/L "Bob" Merrick

Up in the wilds of North Quebec
Where the tundra rules the roost
The stands a bunch of Bomarc birds
With solid rocket boost

This Bomarc is a wondrous thing
It needs no crew at all
As ever alert it stands on guard
Defending old Montreal

No more we need our aircrew
To dash out to their planes
No more they need to bother
This bird will take the strain

The workers are tearing madly around
Adjusting the valves and dials
When all the needles are set in place
This bird should soar for miles

The countdown starts, the tension mounts
The rockets start to scream
And out of the murky blackness
Approaches the firing team

The vital actions are quickly done
The Bomarc soars on high
It’s gone to chase a target
Beyond the northern sky

Sitting awaiting the final result
In a staff car type of crate
The CO hears the crushing news
They've splashed a DC-8

So this is the way the missile works
It makes aircrew passe
But sure as hell it will offend
The wheels of TCA
