PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments at two communication facilities established during the cold war by the US military.

DATES

Start - 1999
Completion - 2000

SERVICES PROVIDED

Review of documents, identifying and interviewing former staff involved with each of the facilities, and carrying out detailed site visits.

SCOPE OF WORK

AMEC carried out Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments at two communication facilities established during the cold war by the US military. These sites were used from the early 1950s to the mid 1960s. Following the US military withdrawal, the sites were abandoned and eventually demolished. However, environmental liabilities associated with the sites were left unresolved.

AMEC's work involved the review of documents, identifying and interviewing former staff involved with each of the facilities, and carrying out detailed site visits. This work was followed up with a reconnaissance field program involving drilling and test pitting; electromagnetic surveying; surface water, sediment, soil, and groundwater sampling and testing; and research into feasible remedial methods and development of associated cost estimates to render the site in compliance with government legislation and policy.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Assess the environmental liabilities left by the withdrawal of the US Military from two of its communication facilities established during the cold war.
