F/O Battye briefed STOP conference on SAGE operation. The Commanding Officer conducted an Air Cadet Inspection at Bracebridge, Ontario.

F/L JE Freebairn CD, served as SAO at Station Edgar from 14 Mar 58 until SOS on release 29 Jun 62. F/L Freebairn officially retired from the RCAF 26 Dec 62 and makes his home in Pincher Creek Alta.

All radar and some communications equipment off the air due to modifications on FST-2 and replacement of breaker and transformer on the power supply. All changes completed successfully.

Tests of ultrasonic cleaner completed. CGE replaced the experimental solid state power supply in AN/FPS-507 (HF-B).

Visit to tower by Lt. Col. J Yaworski, Major H Hogan, Major R Whitely from USAF NORAD and Major Clayton and CWO Cale from USAF ADC. These officers were here for Sky Shield III at Ottawa NORAD Sector.

Barrie Chamber of Commerce visited station and were given a SAGE briefing by S/L Reid and a tour of facilities. Local MSE Roadeo won by Cpl. Gibson, LAC Broada and LAC Lespearance in that order.

3 Field Maintenance party begins operating from North Bay. Mssrs. Magnusson and Steinwold from Western Electric HQ in NY City visited in connection with SAGE.

Ingenieur Principal Monpetit, Captain Tempe of French Air Force, Mr. J Duhamel, DDP and Mr. D Brannion, Department of Trade and Commerce, visited unit. They were interested in SAGE LRR and in particular the new AJ Consoles.

AVM Harvey visited the station and attended the dining-in night in the Officer’s Mess.

The current Squadron Commanders course at the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps School, Camp Borden, visited the unit for one day. In charge were Major Cade and Major Rotherey. Talks on Air Defence Indoctrination, given by S/L Reid, followed a tour of the Operations building and a TGIF in the Officer’s Mess. 1 Captain and 3 Senior NCOs in from Air Surveillance and Height Sections at Syracuse Sector visited for familiarization.

The CO, CTelO, PAdO and STelO from Ottawa Sector attended a memorial service at Collier Street United Church Barrie for S/L Rodger. The Commanding Officer laid a wreathe at the Cenotaph on behalf of the station.

Mr. Don Erts and Mr. F Goodyear of WEAKES visited in connection with site evaluation (PRIME).

Mr. Prosper of CAL and a civilian from Rome Air Defence centre in to look at AJ Consoles.

North Toronto Chapter of Ontario Association of Professional Engineers visited station and were given a briefing and tour of SAGE.

CONAD to DEFCON 3. CTelO told Sector Commander that we would consider ourselves at DEFCON 3 in all technical aspects. He then told Air Commodore Hull, CStaffO what he had done and obtained agreement. Complete check made of readiness.

F/L Ling, FS Newman of AMC, Mr. Prosper and Mr. Bonish of CAL in to start installation of AJ Consoles.

NORAD DEFCON 3 called at 1745Z. Since the SAGE/Telecommunications is already at DEFCON 3, no major action necessary.

S/L Brunger and F/L Dunn, ADC, in for handover meeting on AJ Consoles. The Consoles are accepted.

28 Oct 62

One power supply for AN/FST-2 failed. Difficulty was met in procurement of a new one since we have not signed AFTO 87.

30 Oct 62

Sent proposal to ADCHQ, for use of telescopic antennas on EDP communications.

30 and 31 Oct 62

F/L MacLennan, ADCHQ, visited unit to study Preventative Maintenance System. WO2 Foreman, CS from ADCHQ, inspected accounting procedure in CE Section.

Electronics Supply Group placed in operation.

F/O Orr, ADC, and FS Newman, AMC, in for check on AJ Consoles.

Mr. Prosper and Mr. Bonish CAL in to complete work on AJ Consoles. F/L Dunn, ADC, in for AJ Consoles and Staff Crypto check. Cal Van One arrived at the unit.

TD-285 Multiplex equipment for Gap Fillers arrived on unit. Proposal for cutting Morse tapes for Boehme Keying Unit submitted by Cpl. Lyttle, Message Centre.

RCAF Station Edgar participated in a Remembrance Day Parade held in the City of Barrie. F/L DN Ellis was in charge of personnel from Barrie.

FS Aebig, EWU St. Hubert, on site for SAGE familiarization. Sgt. Gorman visited to inspect CAL Van.

14 Nov 62

Interference encountered on the new "N" carrier system. Caused by HF 1. Aluminum foil screening of walls of Telco has eliminated.

F/O Beattie and F/O Battye, ADC, visited to discuss the setting up of a short course for CE personnel on mechanical radar maintenance.
