7 and 8 Dec 61

Ottawa NORAD Sector participated in the 26th NORAD Region Operational Readiness Evaluation. Ottawa Sector’s role was to provide forward telling warning under adverse conditions.

20 Dec 61

G/C WA Hockney, Commander, Ottawa NORAD Sector, represented the AOC ADC at the official handover ceremony of 912 AC&W Squadron, Ramore Ontario, from the USAF. S/L RD Forbes-Roberts assumed command of the new RCAF Station Ramore.

22 Dec 61

410 AW Squadron at Station Uplands resumed its role in Air Defence with CF-101Bs after completion of their conversion from CF-100s.

9 Jan 62

G/C Hockney attended a Conference held at NNR with representatives of the 30th NORAD Region and Sault Ste Marie NORAD Sector to discuss the operation of North Bay Bomarcs.

11 Jan 62

G/C Hockney attended an ADC/NNR Mess Dinner in honour of the Honourable Douglas S Harkness, Minister of National Defence. Ottawa Sector HQ was visited by Major Kelly and Captain Letson of the Toronto Target Area Headquarters (National Survey Agency) in Newmarket, Ontario.

16 to 18 Jan 62

G/C Hockney, Sector Commander, and S/L WJ Honegger, Sector Telecommunications Officer, visited the Syracuse NORAD Sector.

17 Jan 62

STM Problem 727 was re-run. This was a tri-sector Senior Battle Staff exercise. The purpose of this STM was to exercise the Air Defence System under gradually deteriorating conditions.

19 Jan 62

A/C PA Gilchrist from ADCHQ and G/C RE Porter, W/C EA Wilson, S/L RJ Gurney and S/L JW Murphy from TCHQ visited the Ottawa Sector HQ. A briefing was given on Air Defence Operations under the SAGE and Manual environment.

23 Jan 62

ONSHQ went ALCOP from 1800Z to 1825Z due to electrical repairs at St. Hubert.

30 Jan 62

414 AW Squadron at Station Uplands resumed its role in Air Defence with CF-101Bs after completion of their conversion from CF-100s. ONS Exercise Catseye 1/62 was cancelled due to weather.

31 Jan 62

STP Exercise "Duty Clock" was run. This was a limited warning exercise of four hours duration. The purpose of the exercise was to train ONS personnel under gradual loss of facilities and weapons.

1 Feb 62

G/C Hockney gave a briefing on "Canada’s Part In and Contribution to North American Air Defence" to the Rotary Club of Barrie, Ontario. W/C Wilson, Deputy Sector Commander, briefed the Association of Professional Engineers (Barrie Chapter) at Sector HQ on the subject of Air Defence.

4 and 5 Feb 62

S/L JH Cochrane of Sault Ste Marie NORAD Sector visited the ONSHQ for cross training purposes.

5 Feb 62

416 AW Squadron at Station Uplands resumed its role in Air Defence with CF-101Bs after completion of their conversion from CF-100s. A Bomarc Conference was held at ONSHQ with Sault Ste Marie NORAD Sector representatives participating. Control of North Bay Bomarcs was discussed and agreement drawn up.

6 and 7 Feb 62

An NNR Intelligence Team, Captain Ackiss and F/L Sylvestre, paid a staff visit to ONSHQ to discuss Intelligence Reports, Briefings, Threat and Build-up Messages.

15 Feb 62

The NNR Intelligence Team revisited Sector HQ this date.

27 Feb 62

STM Desk Top IV was re-run.

12 Mar 62

S/L JOA Levesque, Chief Operations Officer of RCAF Station Falconbridge made a familiarization visit to the ONSHQ.

15 Mar 62

Ottawa NORAD Sector Exercise Catseye 2/62 was run in conjunction with Syracuse NORAD Sector exercise Dutchmaster.

17 Mar 62

G/C Hockney was guest speaker at a Mess Dinner for W/C CC Underhill, the Commanding Officer of RCAF Station Senneterre, who was retiring from the service.

27 Mar 62

A/W/C JE Goldsmith assumed command of RCAF Station Senneterre.

28 and 29 Mar 62

During a tour of Station Edgar, a visit was made to Sector HQ by the Commandant, Brigadier DC Cameron, DSO ED CD, and students of the Army Staff College at Kingston. The tour and briefings were followed by a luncheon.

5 Apr 62

Tri-region Exercise Shockwave III was run with NNR, 30th NR and 26th NR. The exercise consisted of a single wave, and simulated bomb damage.

6 Apr 62

S/L S Evans, Senior Airwoman Personnel Officer from AFHQ, was accompanied by F/L EP Phillips on a visit to Sector HQ.

13 Apr 62

A tour and briefing at ONSHQ were conducted for members of the local press, radio and TV stations.

4 May 62

Exercise Shockwave IV was held with NNR, 30th NR and 26th NR participating. The primary objective was to exercise all components of the Air Defence System during a selective degraded posture.

8 May 62

A/W/C JE Goldsmith, Commanding Officer of RCAF Station Senneterre, made a familiarization visit to Sector HQ.

14 May 62

G/C Hockney carried out the Annual Inspection of the 700 RCAC Squadron at Downsview, Ontario.

15 May 62

W/C E Wilson inspected the 218 RCAC Squadron in Toronto.

16 May 62

S/L RA Coulter assumed command of RCAF Station Great Whale River.

17 May 62

A conference at NNR St. Hubert was attended by G/C Hockney. The purpose of the conference was to discuss operational matters pertaining to the proposed phase-out of Montreal NORAD Sector on 15 Sep 62 and its amalgamation with the Ottawa NORAD Sector.

22 May 62

Catseye 3/62 was run in the Ottawa NORAD Sector. This was the first Sector exercise involving a large target force of 40 aircraft.

23 May 62

The Annual Inspection of 167 RCAF Squadron in Owen Sound, Ontario was carried out by W/C E Wilson.

29 May 62

G/C Hockney attended the ADC COs Conference at St. Hubert.
