LAC WB Donovan, FtrCop, reported for 12 days trade training (53 GObC Det Brockville). LAC DM Robertson, FtrCop from 2416 Auxiliary Squadron Ottawa, arrived on TD for trade advancement (1 – 26 Jun inclusive). STP – problem 15.

The following personnel visited the unit to attend a meeting at 1000 hours between Canadian Marconi, Canadian General Electric and AMC to clarify the installation requirements of the SM72 modification (AN/FPS-6 Radar Equipment Layout Tower). A physical inspection of the Arctic Tower location and final installation details were also completed at this time. From CTel DRDP F/L HB Robinson, Mr. HC Wilson. From AMCHQ STel Mr. DA Cameron, Mr. DP Grundy. From CGE, Mr. T Dawson, Mr. JS Mark, Mr. L Barey. From 1224 TSD Toronto, F/O Graham. Unknown – Hamlet Zulu was scrambled; identified friendly prior to the interception of a BOAC aircraft.

Five Army officers and five Sr. NCOs from RCHA visited the Station. A briefing was given at 1330 hours followed by a tour of the operational and technical facilities. STP – Problem 7.

F/O DD Law, AS/FtrC, selected to participate in the Rocket Meet and left for Cold Lake, Alberta this date.

Mr. JJ Boulais of AMTS CCE visited to make a study of access roads requirements. ECM – Boneyard II – working Crystal 2 hours. STP – Problem 7.

Emergency Defence Plan (EDP/59) completed. Exercise – Catseye 8. 10 MA, 6 MI. Exercise – Chessmatch 1 MA, 2 MI.

Exercise – Boneyard 18 MA, 11 MI. ECM – Boneyard II – LS Band Mechanical 4 hours. STP – Desk Top II (Problem 601 scripted).

WO1 Pain, Command Inspector of Explosives, visited for two days for the Annual inspection of explosives and armament facilities. F/L Eakins, ASWelO (from AMCHQ) visited the unit. Exercise – Chessmatch 1 MA, 4 MI. STP – Desk Top II (Problem 602) 3 hour film increased manning. This exercise commenced at 0839 hours and was a large scale synthetic exercise which simulated complete wartime conditions and involved considerable damage to long line communications facilities. The exercise terminated at 1700 hours.

Ottawa Valley Cubaree held in the Recreation Hall. 150-180 visiting cubs arrived making a total of 200 attending. Unknown – XE2 Hamlet Zulu scrambled and the target was identified as an Overseas BOAC aircraft off flight plan. Exercise – (Auxiliary) – Little Chessmatch 2 MA, 1 MI

Cpl. JF Landreville, Med A, from 4007 MU Uplands, reported in for special duty (14 – 20 Jun inclusive). AC2 O Kramar, OpMME, from 2451 (Auxiliary) Squadron Windsor was posted in for special duty (14 Jun – 31 Aug 59).

LAC AK Higginbottom from 53 GObC Det Brockville, reported in for trade training (15 – 26 Jun inclusive).

The two Tennis courts were completed in time for the NORAD competitions at this Station. Exercise – Chessmatch - 1 MA, 9 MI. Exercise – Chessmatch – 2 MA, 6 MI.

Messrs. JR Kenny and EC Cook of NRC conducted trials on coder-decoder portion of the Automatic Strobe Triangulation (ASTRID) equipment between 1200 hours and 1700 hours.

A Security Alert was held. Exercise – Cueball 21 1 MA, 6 MI.

W/C AW Riddell and F/L RF Maxon from ADCHQ, made a CE staff visit. Northern Ontario Recreation Association mixed Tennis and Ladies Softball tournaments were held at Foymount. The visiting Stations were Falconbridge, Edgar and Senneterre. Foymount placed third in the Ladies Softball playoffs and the Station won the tennis tournament. At the conclusion of the inter-station sports program there was an extremely successful Station dance.

Mr. Krupp, the Canadian Project Engineer for the AdCom II Microwave Installation, visited the unit to inspect the site location. Between 1030 hours and 1500 hours a briefing was held for unit technical personnel for Radar Improvement Programme and its effect upon the unit. Present were F/L R Shives of the Assistant for Telecom Systems Co-ordination (ASTC) branch of AFHQ, F/L N Hetherington of DRDP, AFHQ, F/O P Collier of D Eng C, AFHQ, F/L A Ireland of DRDP, ADCHQ and Mr. R Sheppard of AMCHQ. STP – Problem 6.

F/L Martin, 2416 Auxiliary Squadron Liaison Officer, visited to discuss summer camp plans.

Mr. RG Canning, AFHQ Construction Engineer, visited to discuss the new apartment buildings. Messrs. D Haggarty and F Masserellu of Canadian National Telegraph arrived on the unit to re-route the weather teletype circuit (Met 107). The re-routing involved cutting Killaloe range station of DOT off from this unit’s weather link. STP – Problem 13 (Battle Staff participation).

Exercise – Big Blast 0 MA, 2 MI. ECM – L Band & S Band Nimrod 29 – 60 minutes.

It was announced that F/O DD Law won the MacBrien Trophy for best controlling at the Annual Rocket Shoot at Station Cold Lake. Mr. H Rideley, the area maintenance supervisor for the Canadian General Electric Microwave System, conducted an inspection of the unit maintenance system between 1515 and 1700 hours. STP – Problem 6.

35 Air Cadets from Pembroke were given a familiarization tour of the unit.

A modification of the FPS-6 height finder involving the addition of a "ferrite-isolator" on the transmitter output was completed by unit personnel. This equipment acts as a protection for the transmitter from antenna "back radiation" and reduces frequency shift during operation.

LAC RK MacLean from 53 GObC Det Brockville reported in for trade training (29 Jun – 10 Jul 59). The following personnel from 2451 Auxiliary Squadron Windsor were posted in for camp training; AC1 JF Cheswick (29 Jun – 16 Aug 59); LAC GW Costeau and AC1 BR Rodie (29 Jun – 30 Aug 59). F/L J Eakins, ASWelO, (AMCHQ) visited. Mr. Marchingon of the Canadian National Teletype Maintenance Depot, visited the unit to repair the Met TT circuit.

Exercise – Crosstop 6 (Commercial broadcast facilities) 0 MA, 4 MI. ECM – S Band – source unknown – 1 hr 10 minutes. STP – Problem 13. The Royal Aircraft, Smoke Ring Fair Lady, landed safely at Ottawa 1913 hours local. F/O J Bates was appointed as specific controller.

F/C GA Weber, CE, from University of Saskatchewan Squadron and F/C MR McLean, PersAdm, from University of Alberta, reported in for summer training. STP – Problem 4 (Battle Staff).

Exercise – Boneyard I 29 MA, 22 MI (ECM L & S Bands and Chaff).

Mr. H Rogers of AMCHQ and Messrs. RL Martin and OA Vale of Defence Inspection services, arrived on the unit to inspect the quality of construction and installation of the rigid radome on the FPS-6 height finder. This inspection was in conjunction with an investigation of faults reported by other units with similar installations. STP – Problem 4.

The personnel of 2451 Auxiliary Squadron Windsor arrived for their two week summer camp period.

S/L HA Pattinson assumes command of the unit in the absence of W/C HE Smith on leave. Messrs. Reavely and Thorne of 6RD arrived to calibrate FPS-3 test equipment prior to RCAF personnel doing the semi-annual peaking of the FPS-3 search radar. W/C Monteith and S/L Cheyne from ADCHQ visited to inspect new construction and preventative maintenance. STP – Problem 4 (2451 Auxiliary Squadron participating).

Messrs. J Todd and S Black of Canadian General Electric arrived to conduct major modifications to the FPS-6 height finder under the direction of Mr. R Bowslaugh. Exercise – Chessmatch 3 MA, 3 MI.

STP – Problem 13 (Battle Staff participation 2451 Auxiliary Squadron).

Exercise – Chessmatch 6 MA, 2 MI. Exercise – Big Blast Red Eagle 4 MA, 4 MI (2451 Auxiliary Squadron assisting).

STP – Problem 11 (Auxiliary participation 2451 Squadron). FPS-6 off the air for CGE modifications.

The FPS-6 was returned to service at 1500 hours having completed three 6B and four 6A modifications inclusive including the addition of a new antenna control group at the RHI position and an automatic run-up and control system for the transmitter. These modifications partially complete the retrofit of the original FPS-6 to a type FPS-6A in conjunction with the RIP. A Station dance, held in the Recreation Hall, was attended by station and Auxiliary personnel.

F/L JL McMahon from ADCHQ visited to observe 2451 (Auxiliary) Wray Day. 2451 Auxiliary Squadron held their first Wray Day – 0830 to 2359 hours local – Little Chessmatch resulting in 1 MA, 3 MI. (1 TD – 2 CE).

F/C B Dick, FSv, reported in from Centralia for summer training (McMaster University Squadron). Exercise – Dutch Treat 6 MA, 9 MI. Emergency – Davenport Hotel #1 – Fuel emergency warning light; recovered at Ottawa without incident. STP – Problem 7 (2451 Auxiliary Squadron participating).

F/L AR Bjorndahl and FS DH Griffin from ADCHQ made a SOMSE staff visit.

W/C KW Hampson and WO1 JA Crate from AFHQ arrived for Hygiene inspection. ECM – L & S Band electronic (30 Air Div Shake Up Exercise – 20 minutes). STP – Problem 653 – 30^th Air Div participation. Preliminary work on the FPS-3 peaking was commenced by Unit personnel. A Monte Carlo Night was held in the Recreation Hall as part of the recreation programme organized during the Auxiliary Summer Camp period.

W/C HE Smith assumes command of the unit on return from leave. Unknown – XG5 – DPI scrambled, track faded prior to intercept. Identified by OW Tower as Spartan Mosquito at 28,000 feet. Exercise – Chessmatch 4 MA, 4 MI. Exercise – (Auxiliary) – Chessmatch – 1 MA 1 MI. Emergency – DPL1 – Fire warning light recovered at OW with no problem.

Dr Arnell, Scientific Advisor to the CAS, Dr. Radford, Corr Director of Systems Evaluation and W/C J Woolfenden from AFHQ arrived for a familiarization visit and tour of the tower. Lt. AJ Schneider, WO2 RS Hedges, Sgt. McDimmell and Cpl. MG Lumonis from the Field Security section of the Intelligence Corps visited the unit and were given a briefing and tour of the tower. Messrs. JG Blain and HE Henderson of Bedard and Girard Contracting Company visited the unit to discuss details of Operations Building power modifications for the RIP. STP – Problem 8. The Station Softball Team participated in the NORA tournament at North Bay.

F/O RA Spencer, PRO, 2416 Auxiliary Squadron Ottawa arrived for two days – PRO duties. The FPS-3 was removed from service for scheduled semi-annual peaking at 0830 hours. At 1800 hours the FPS-3 went back on the air after the first complete peaking to be carried out solely by unit personnel at RCAF Station Foymount.

The personnel of 2416 Auxiliary Squadron Ottawa arrived for their two weeks summer camp period.

F/L CFR Crosson, new SSupO reported in on transfer from 1 Air Division. F/L RM Muir, from ADCHQ, SOGT staff, visited to discuss Ground Training problems. Unknown – XE identified TCA Viscount 637 Flight 254 from VO to OW. Unknown – XB98 identified as 2 C-45s Nos. 1504 and 2334. STP – Problem 8.

Lt. Col. RV Hyde, Director of the Armed Services Postal Services visited the unit. A Board of Inquiry was held to study trade exam failures.

LAC RE Foster and LAC RLG Pental from Station Edgar arrived to carry out Preventative Maintenance. F/L J Eakins, ASWelO, (AMCHQ) visited.

F/O AW Foster and F/O JE McLean, OC i/c WP personnel of 2416 Auxiliary Squadron OW arrived on TD (2 days). F/L WE Bullock RSO 2416 Auxiliary Squadron OW arrived for 2 days squadron duties. Messrs. T Sullivan, GJ Johnson, and RC Goodfellow of Sullivan Construction Co. visited the Ops Bldg in the company of Mr. W MacPherson, DCL, to look over construction changes to be made during the RIP. ECM – L Band electronic from Big Blast mission on Suzy Q – 10 minutes – condition 3 – 10 minutes – condition 1. STP - Problem 5.

F/C B Erickson, TechTel, reported in from Station Clinton for summer training – University of BC Squadron.

Exercise – Boneyard 2 AI electronic and stream jamming. 6 MA 7 MI. STP – Problem 8 (Auxiliary personnel manned all positions except Battle Commander).

Unknown – XE 9 HLZ1 scrambled – identified friendly prior to intercept as TWA 893 off flight plan. Exercise – HLB1 proceeding to Puritan for PAI reported port engine flamed out. Returned to OW and relit during descent. STP – Problem 10 – Battle Staff participation Tomboy acted as Sector.

S/L GJ Cheyne from AFHQ visited for two days regarding the status of trial methods for preventative maintenance in operating plants. F/L Myers, STelO, attended an RIP Progress meeting at ATSC, RCAF Station Victoria Island. This meeting covered all progress throughout the Pinetree line to date and any problems to be expected. Exercise – Big Blast 1 MA 5 MI.

F/L RW Butcher of the CE Field Liaison staff of ADCHQ visited regarding preventative maintenance. F/C JJ Renaud, PersAdm, from the University of Montreal, reported in for summer training. STP – Problem 8 (Auxiliary personnel manned all positions except Battle Commander). A swimming programme commenced whereby all service personnel are tested (Junior Red Cross level) and classes commenced for non-swimmers and personnel who failed to pass the a/n test.

Sgt. JPG Deschamps, AFP, reported in for one month annual training (MATP).

F/L JJM Coulombe, new MO, reported in on transfer from Station Centralia. Messrs. RW Kelly and TC Byberg of RCA Victor Co., arrived to commence the caulking of the rigid radome on the FPS-6. A brush fire was reported at Lake Clear and fire fighters from this unit were dispatched to assist.

Mr. FE Wright, AFHQ Construction Engineer, visited for one day for CCE inspection. F/L FA Stock assumed the position of COpsO in the absence of S/L HA Pattinson, on leave. F/L NG Bishop, F/C DL Allcorn and F/C WB Rayner from 53 GObC Det Brockville Ont, visited the unit and were given a briefing and tour of the tower. Exercise – Fallout 6 MA 3 MI.

Mr. John Warr, of the NORWESTO Communications Co., visited for a telephone maintenance inspection. Unknown - UA7 – originating in Battleaxe area made unknown at 1944Z. Identified friendly at 1950Z by flight plan as a CF-100 from Bagotville to North Bay. STP – Problem 10 – Battle Staff participation.

S/L CL McManus, F/O RH Koehn, F/O FW Hall, F/O MH Seifert, from 410 Squadron Uplands, arrived for GCI cross training for 2 days). Exercise – Chessmatch 3 MA 5 MI. Exercise – Boneyard 33 MA 12 MI. Caulking of the rigid radome was completed at 1500 hours. A Nuclear and Security alert was held. The new Security lighting in the Ops Compound proved extremely effective and the station personnel and dependents showed excellent response to the Nuclear warning.

Emergency – T-33 21239 had unserviceable air speed indicator – HLZ section scrambled and led him in for a landing

Dr. GH Cussen, who was on post graduate work for two years in Canada (from Ireland) and employed by the RCAF, reported in from Station St. Hubert to replace F/L JJM Coulombe, MO, on leave. Sgt. HA Haggstrom reported in from 1 R&CS Clinton on TD for familiarization in order to keep current in the Operational aspects of the AC&W system. (4 days). Mr. Jack Martin of Bedard & Girard Co. commenced preliminary work in the Power Plant for the shutdown scheduled for 9 Sep. STP – Problem 16. It was announced that WO1 PC Redgrave, TelMSupt, won first place in the ADC Amateur Photography contest.

Exercise – Boneyard 3 37 MA 4 MI. Exercise – Chessmatch 2 MA 4 MI. Electrical power modifications in Ops Bldg commenced in preparation for installation of a new 110/208 volt distribution board in the diesel plant under direction of foreman R Lalonde of the Bedard and Girard Company.

Mr. HR Merritt, DOT Liaison Officer, and Dr. JA Patton, STM representative, visited to discuss STP and AMIS matters. The TPS-501 back-up height finder was removed from service in conjunction with the RIP and storage of the obsolete equipment in the back-up tower commenced. The annual communications equipment overhaul was commenced by a group of eight NE Co. technicians under the direction of Mr. S Roberts. Exercise – Cueball 23 1 Ma 19 MI. STP – Problem 654 – Battle Staff participation.

A familiarization visit of the unit was given to 79 RTTP trainees, 3 officers and 8 instructors from 2416 Auxiliary Squadron Uplands. Exercise – Big Blast 0 MA 2 MI. Emergency – XB67 in Trenton area. XLZ1 scrambled to intercept and handed over to Suzy Q. Pilot reported there was no aircraft in the area that appeared to be in trouble. Weather was good.

A briefing and familiarization tour of facilities was given (1100 – 1530 hours) to a group of DDP purchasing agents in training consisting of Messrs. TL Pelton, DP Richard, DC Thom, BJ Pannel, FW Diamond, DC Gerber and RR Smedley. F/L J Lapointe, ADCHQ, reported in on TD for Command audit. STP – Problem 16.

F/L P Gosson from 2416 Auxiliary Squadron Ottawa reported in for one week contact training. A Station dance was held in the Recreation Hall.

S/L HA Pattinson reassumes position of COpsO on return from leave. STP – Problem 13 (Battle Staff). Removal and storage of TPS 501 was completed by unit Radar personnel.

ECM – L and S Band from USAF – 46 minutes. One triangulation exercise with Signpost – 2 hours.

ECM – L & S Band from USAF call sign Coconut – 10 minutes. Big Blast Sound Wave L & S Bands, mechanical – 1 hour 22 minutes. STP – Problem 17.

The Station Track & Field team place third in an inter-station meet at Station Rockcliffe.

Dr. GH Cussen, temporary MO in the absence of F/L JJM Coulombe, returned to Station St. Hubert.

FS Edwards from AFHQ arrived to assist in putting aeration tank sewage treatment plant back into proper operating condition. F/L J Eakins, ASWelO, (AMCHQ) visited. F/L TA Marshall handed over the Account Section to F/L J Lapointe from ADCHQ. F/L Marshall is transferred to Station St Sylvestre. STP – Problem 7. The 35 foot inflated radome on the left tower was deflated at 1430 hours and removed by unit personnel to allow roofing of the tower and removal of the pressurizing equipment by the RIP contractor.

F/L FA Stock assumes routine duties of COpsO, pending the transfer of S/L HA Pattinson on 31 Aug to SAGE Syracuse, NY. Mr. L Blais, Bedard & Girard supervisor, arrived to direct work during the coming diesel plant shut-down. The right 35 foot inflated radome was removed by unit personnel at 1515 hours.

LAC GV MacDougall and LAC WJ Lee arrived on TD from Station Edgar for preventative maintenance. ECM – Live triangulations 2 hours. STP – Problem 13 (Battle Staff). The Annual Safe and Skilled Driving competition was held with seven drivers competing. Cpl. Dionne won the event by a close margin over Cpl. Tennant.

F/Os Boulger, Bilton, Pietrozko and Hook from 428 Squadron Uplands arrived for cross training one day. Messrs. W Bracke and G Wamboldt of NE Co. completed a supervisory visit to the MRP working on the overhaul of unit communications equipment (2 days). Mr. R Flindle of NE Co. did a survey of calibration methods used by the unit on the GPA 30 Video Mapping equipment. Exercise – Catseye 9 5 MA 2 MI.

STP – Problem 17.

Station Foymount place second in the NORA Archery Tournament held at Station Senneterre.

A break-in and theft in the Sr. NCOs, Cpls’ and Airmen’s Messes was discovered in the early morning. The AFP, OPP and SIU are investigating and a Summary Investigation has been convened.

F/L JJM Coulombe assumes the position of unit MO on return from leave. F/L DS Berube assume the position of SAO on transfer from Station St Sylvestre. Unknown – UK2 identified prior to intercept as two CF-100 under Puritan control. STP – Problem 12.

Mr. RG Canning, AFHQ Construction Engineer, made a CCE inspection. S/L SR Miller, COpsO, reported in on transfer from Station Edgar. Exercise – Chessmatch 1 MA 3 MI. Exercise – Chessmatch 5 MA 3 MI. ECM – Triangulation Ex 17 with Signpost – 2 hours.

WO1 Aucoin and Sgt. Farthing from ADCHQ visited for a Power Plant inspection. STP – Problem 9 (Battle Staff).

S/L Grigg, F/L Wingate and one representative from the Civil Service Commission from ADCHQ Organization and Establishment visited to discuss cleaning staff establishment. AIRCRAFT EM Reyno, D/AOC, made a staff visit. Exercise – Big Blast Red Eagle 5 MA 2 MI. ECM – Big Blast Red Eagle S Band mechanical – 1 hour.

F/L JL McMahon from ADCHQ arrived to discuss the operational training of Auxiliary personnel and Auxiliary fighter controller evaluations. Communications equipment annual overhaul completed. Unknown – UA5E identified by Eskimo by IFF – CF-100 target. STP – Problem 8.

ECM – S Band source unknown – 17 minutes.

The Cpl’s. Club Softball team represented the Station in the ADC inter-section Softball playoffs at Station Edgar. Edgar won the sudden-death playoff 4-0.

The A/G/A Transmitter site was switched from Ops Bldg diesel to commercial hydro power at 1330 hours in preparation for the conversion of power plant distribution equipment. Exercise – Chessmatch 0 MA 4 MI. ECM – Signpost Exercise 15 – 1 hour 45 minutes.

The Ops Bldg diesel plant was shut down at 0300 hours for RIP conversion to a new distribution panel board. Temporary hydro power was supplied by the contractor to essential lights, the telephone system, teletype, microwave equipment and main radome pressurizing equipment. Mr. R Baker was on hand from DCL to inspect contractor’s work. During this period (9 – 12 Sep) the majority of operational staff proceeded to various units for cross training. The RCN is preparing revised plans for the relocation of naval headquarters outside the Ottawa area in the event of emergency. The Eganville area is being examined as a possible site and it is desirable that a service establishment be found near this general area, where a limited amount of essential equipment and records could be stored in peacetime with adequate protection and security. The following RCN officers visited to examine any facilities which may be available. This visit was of an exploratory nature only and no commitment was made at that time. Lt Cdr EM Jones, Lt Cdr V Henry, Lt Cdr CJ Mair and Lt H Hargreaves.

Messrs. W Trischuk, AFHQ, Mr. Macklin, Pat Monahan, Lawrence Monahan and Oliver Lloyd, all members of the consulting firm of Marshall, Macklin and Monahan, arrived to carry out the preliminary survey of Radar Improvement. At 0707 hours a failure of commercial hydro supplying the camp put the Ops Bldg completely out and the main radome started to deflate. At 0825 hours the contractor and unit personnel succeeded in restoring power from the diesel plant through temporary facilities in time to save the main radome from complete collapse. The IFF antenna was slightly damaged, however, repair was possible through unit resources before the radar was returned to service.

S/L McCarten from AFHQ made a medical staff visit. At 2300 hours the new 110/208 power distribution panel was energized in the Ops building diesel plant and power restored to the unit radar equipment. The Unit Safety Supervisor (Sgt. WE Day) and the winner of the unit Safe and Skilled Driving Contest (Cpl. Dionne) attended the Provincial Contest finals held in Kingston, Ont. Cpl. Dionne placed 21^st out of 31 contestants.

At 0035 hours the unit returned to operational status after the 72 hour power shut-down.

A fire was reported at the School in the early afternoon. It originated in a pile of trash near the new addition to the School and a small portion of one wall was scorched. An investigation revealed that there was no arson involved.

S/L SR Miller assumes command of RCAF Station Foymount in the absence of W/C HE Smith on practice flying. Sgt. Bristown from SIU Rockcliffe reported in to investigate discrepancies in the operation of the Central Warehouse. STP – Problem 8.

Mr. Ross and Mr. Ash, representatives from the District Taxation Office, visited for the purpose of checking the personal exemption claims of RCAF personnel and the income tax accounting procedures of our accounts section. At 1400 hours, Mr. EC Cook and Mr. RJ McEwan of NRC installed recorder, receiver and decoding portions of the ASTRID installation for tests within the next few months. Five plastic tote boards were installed. These boards are being used for the display of tactical action and have proven superior to the old type.

S/L RA Osborne, Command Matron, made a staff visit. Two moving vans from Belleville arrived with the FPS-20 equipment. Under the direction of Messrs. Messrs. EC Cook, RJ Kenny and LJ McEwan installed the indicator portion of the ASTRID system. The annual overhaul of the 15-J1D radar trainer by Mr. TA Davidson of RCA Victor Co. was commenced with the assistance of unit radar personnel.

Kiwanis Kids Day – 35 teenage boys from Pembroke were given a guided tour of the station and operations site.

S/L MW Garnett, Major EC Price (USAF), F/L GP Ramsay, F/L MH Shaw and F/L DOH Lefebre of AFHQ in addition to F/L JL McMahon and F/L RW Farrington of ADCHQ observed a demonstration of a communications jamming simulator as well as a demonstration of ASTRID by NRC. The Comms jamming simulator was built up by unit Comm Techs under the direction of F/O FC Ling. Mr. RG Canning, AFHQ Construction Engineer, visited for a CEM5 inspection. F/L OH Hack, SOGT branch, ADCHQ, reported in on TD for a GT staff visit and to give a projectionist course. Exercise – Chessmatch 2 MA 2MI. STP – Problem 10 (Battle Staff) (Simulated TAC action).

W/C NJ Gallagher, Command RC Chaplain and W/C W Rodger, Command Protestant Chaplain, visited for two days. F/P DJ Cockburn and F/O WP Berlanquet from 410 Squadron Uplands arrived for one day cross training. Unknown – SB45 during Catseye. Intercepted by DPK Eskimo control. The annual overhaul of the 15-J1D was completed by RCA. The message centre and cipher room was moved from Rooms 113, 144, and 120 on the first floor to Rooms 412A, B and C on the fourth floor of the Ops Bldg in conjunction with the RIP. STP – Problem 16. A Station Dance was held in the Recreation Centre sponsored by the Community Council.

Sgt. WL Rogers, Cpl. WG Ray and LAC DH Behrens from Station Edgar arrive on TD for preventative maintenance.

Mr. JD Golds of Canadian Applied Research Ltd., visited in connection with the operation of Type 232 Recording equipment. WO2 Dilworth and Sgt. R Lee from AMCHQ SACO visited for two days to obtain information on the C232 Radar Camera recording system to assist in the preparation of an engineering order. Sulphers Ltd. have started the construction of the Guard House at the Station. Mr. G Wamboldt and a party of Northern Electric Co. technicians conducted an overhaul of UHF and VHF antennas at the receiver and transmitter sites. Exercise – Chessmatch 4 MA 0 MI. STP – Problem 16.

The Canada Savings Bond Campaign commenced.

Mr. R Nikkel of DRB and Mr. Greenwood of Canadian Arsenal Ltd. inspected possible sites on the unit for a monitor installation for coming Belt Loop trials with an RAF Valiant ECM aircraft. Dr. Rettie, Mr. N Cook and Mr. R Kenny of NRC demonstrated the ASTRID equipment to F/L Tanner and F/L Elton of ADCHQ.

S/L SR Miller assumes command of RCAF Station Foymount in the absence of W/C HE Smith on leave. F/O Potvin and F/O Walker from 410 Squadron Uplands arrived for one day cross training. Exercise – Fast Move 0 MA 0 MI. A Security alert was called in conjunction with a Cueball exercise. The Station was not tested by an infiltration force. Azimuth time recorder equipment, which had arrived by special air freight on Sat 10 Oct, was installed for use during exercise "Fast Move". The recorder successfully operated during the exercise which was completed at 1600 hours 14 Oct.

The Airmen’s October Trade Exams were held. F/O FC Ling who was STelO at Foymount from Jan 57 to Sep 57 and then A/STelO after that time, departed on transfer to AFHQ Ottawa. ECM – 5 GCI site runs L and S Bands – 2 hours. ECM – Fast Move L and S Bands – 1 hour.

Due to the large exercise held on 14 Oct the FtrCop Airmen’s Trade exams were held today. Installation of a UPA35 indicator on the FPS-3 was completed by Messrs. N Cook and J Humphreys of NRC for use with the ASTRID triangulation system.

Two RCASC officers from Camp Petawawa, Captain Gladstone and Lt. J McLeish together with 6 ORs visited to examine our messing facilities and were given a tour of the tower. Exercise – Big Blast Red Eagle 1 MA 1 MI. ECM – Big Blast Red Eagle – 1 hour 40 minutes. STP – Problem 17.

This unit placed first in the NORA Flag Football tournament held at Station Edgar virtually assuming possession of the NORA Commanders Trophy in the first year of that organization.

ECM – Big Photo 494 L and S Bands – 40 minutes. ECM - 60 GCI site runs (ASTRID trials) – 2 hours. A special ECM run was made against the unit by a C-119 aircraft from St Hubert ECM unit to test the ASTRID equipment operated by Dr. Rettie and Messrs. RJ Kenny and N Cook of NRC. The ASTRID equipment required further modifications.

The DM Auditors arrived for their annual inspection. Mr. FE Wright, AFHQ Construction Engineer, made a CCE inspection. F/L JCP Brunet, Air/Nav, reported in for 15 days annual training (MATP) in PersAdm. A complete power failure in the Ops building took place at 0855 hours when the trouble was found by contractor personnel to be a loose plate in the new 110/208 distribution panel. STP – Problem 17.

F/L Eakins, ASWelO, (AMCHQ), visited. Emergency – Chessmatch Blue 1 Target Radio Compass failure and short of fuel – recovered without incident at OW. F/L CN Evoy, Command Medical Secretary, made a staff visit. A full scale ASTRID demonstration was made by Drs. Rettie and Hunt aided by Messrs. N Cook, J Humphreys, L McEwan and R Kenny of NRC to S/L SJ Woodman, F/L FA Tanner, Mr. RL Baglow and Mr. SJ Woodend of ADCHQ; Mr. WM Searle and Mr. Gibson of DRB and Messrs. R Harrison and JC Barnes of NRC. During the evening a two station triangulation on ASTRID was highly successful while the Catseye 12 exercise was in progress. A semi-trailer monitor van and its diesel power truck which had arrived 24 Oct were successfully located at the receiver site in preparation for the Belt Loop trials. The monitoring facilities for Belt Loop were under the supervision of Mr. RF Nikkel of DRB and operated by Messrs. R Greenwood, AL Freeman and AE Saether of CAL. W/C HE Smith reassumes command of RCAF Station Foymount on return from leave. Cpl. JR Genest from ESIU Rockcliffe reported in for 3 Days investigational duties. Mr. C O’Neil and K Garner visited for Fire Alarm Maintenance Service. Dr. F Hunt and Messrs. RS Richards and RK Wilkinson of NRC set up the following ECCM equipments on the FPS-6 for use during the Belt Loop trials: Pre-selection cavity dicke receiver, logarithmic receiver, video integrator and step-gain receiver. DPJ1 cleared to descent to 22,000 feet. DPJ2 experienced radio failure at 1940Z and DPJ1 vectored onto J2. J1 led J2 to OW and cleared to GCA. DPJ Section landed without further incident. F/O JC Brisson, Sgt. CP Callander and LAC EA Vancauwenbergh from Station Uplands, visited for the purpose of carrying out a quarterly inspection of weapons. Captain Lewis H Tew, Captain George C Nicoloff, T/Sgt. Gene E Milliman and T/Sgt. Kenneth C Laderbush from 26^th SAGE Region USAF Syracuse conducted a SAGE briefing and a briefing on the Manual Input System. This meeting was attended by all available controllers and operational staff. Mr. J Warr of North West Telephone Co. conducted his bi-monthly inspection of Unit telephone maintenance. Messrs. Three members of the RAF Valiant crew visited the unit – W/C TP Downey, S/L Potter and F/L Bainbridge.

The ASTRID was demonstrated on Thurs 19 Nov by Dr. Rettie and Mr. N Cook of NRC to Lt. Col. W Holcomb (US Army Liaison Ottawa), Captain D Menheim (Radcom Dept, NORAD HQ, Colorado Springs), Captain W Trapp (Air Defence Ops, Ft Bliss, Maryland) and Captain W Sheaves (US Army Signal Corps, Ft Bliss). The US Army officers were accompanied by F/L W Stuart of DEW, AFHQ. The visitors were also given a tour of the Ops building before their departure.
