Organization Order 1019
226 Aircraft Warning Squadron, Gander, Nfld.
(This Order supersedes SECRET OrgO 1014)

Appendix "A" – Org Chart

1 Dec 52

Information

Subsequent to the date on which OrgO 1014 was issued, more detailed information was obtained on the state of construction at the site for the Aircraft Warning Squadron at Gander, Nfld. This information indicated that the original date selected for activation was premature. Consequently, it has been decided that the activation of this Warning Squadron should be deferred until Jun 53.

Notwithstanding this decision to change the activation date, 1 Feb 53 is to continue to be the date on which AMC is to assume responsibility for the RCAF’s interests at this site.

Intention

To defer the formation of the Aircraft Warning Squadron, Gander.

Execution

Effective Date

This Aircraft Warning Squadron is to form at Gander, Nfld., effective 15 Jun 53. This activation date is the date on which ADC takes over administrative responsibility of the site. ADC HQ is to advise AFHQ when the Squadron is capable of assuming its operational function. An advance party is to be detailed to take over the base facilities from AMC on a date to be arranged by ADC HQ and AMC HQ.

Function

The function of this Aircraft Warning Squadron is to:

  1. Detect and report the plan position of ALL aircraft within the area of surveillance; and
  2. If VHF is provided, render navigational assistance as required to friendly aircraft operating within the area, and provide limited control and direction to friendly combat agencies.

Command

The officer appointed to command this Aircraft Warning Squadron is to be the Commanding Officer as defined by QR(Air) Art 1.02(xxi)

Control

While the functional and administrative control of this Aircraft Warning Squadron is to be exercised by the AOC ADC, this Squadron is to operate under the control of the USAF 64th Air Division for operational purposes. In this connection, the CO of this squadron is to keep ADCHQ constantly advised of operational activities.
