2. Status of the AN/UPS-T5 (Moving Target Simulator):
1. Training hours scheduled: None
2. Training hours completed: None
3. Reason for outage – the AN/UPS-T5 has been out of commission since 21 December 1956 – Bearing.
3. The MO-1 Surveillance Trainer was utilized by four airmen for a total of 33 hours.
4. Operations Problem Areas:
1. Problem areas outlined in previous reports are still a factor in current planning and operations. Consideration of the personnel problem by 64^th AD was based upon information and guidance which is not current. The personnel problem would not exist if factors experienced in 1957 prevailed. Responsibilities levied on this site are not repeat not paralleled with those normally assigned AC&W Sites. Additional study of the situation is required.
2. A problem area of growing concern is a surveillance scope which has been out of commission (RNFP) for gears, 5840-528-1150, and shafts, 16 PT CZ 38556-NL, since January 1958. These parts were ordered on Vouchers #1-17-780, dated 17 January 1958. To date these parts have not been received.
2. Section II – C & E Maintenance:
1. Radar Maintenance: Substandard performance time for the month of June 1958 is 12 hours and 04 minutes and broke down as follows: 4 June 1958, 25 minutes, KY54 coder intermittent; 16 June 1958, 5 hours and 14 minutes, slip ring intermittent – burnished slip rings and installed new brushes; 19 June 1958, 6 hours and 25 minutes, trigger cables intermittent. Marginal conditional now exists because of a shortage of 5939 Pre TR tubes. These tubes requisitioned as RNFP on 25 June 1958. An RNFP requisition for gear and shaft for a scope was made on 17 January 1958 and has not been satisfied; the situation became critical on 6 June when the azimuth drive on a director scope failed, and no spare scope being available, airborne missions were interrupted.
1. During the months of August and September this squadron will lose its assigned 30372 along with the Marconi Systems Engineer. No skilled seven level or civilian counterpart will be available this squadron. Recommend assistance be given in obtaining a replacement, Master Sergeant, as soon as possible.
2. Radar Maintenance – Detachment #1: On 7 June 1958, Det #1 functioned under reduced capabilities for 45 minutes due to TROPO difficulties between detachment and parent site. In addition, Det #1 has 5949/1907 thyratron tubes on requisition RNFP since 18 June, voucher number is 6418-176.
1. On 25 June 1958, S/Sgt. Frazeir, AFSC 30372, departed TDY to hospital for indefinite period pending surgery.
3. Radio Maintenance: One HF transmitter HT-4h was turned into supply for shipment to repair depot. Parts have been on order since May 1958 for the purpose of building a channel indicator for the operations section, they have not been received as of this date. Channel 13 was set up on our multi-backup GRC-27. As a result there is no backup UHF equipment at this station. Two airmen, AFSC 304523, were assigned this section during June. Two airmen returned to duty from hospital. One airman TDY to hospital.
4. C & E Supply: This section has 26 line items on emergency requisition the majority of which are over 60 days old, three go as far back as January and February 1958. Outstanding routine requisitions number 264 line items as of this date, the majority of which are over 120 days old. Many of these routine requisitions will appear emergency status in the next 30 to 60 days.
5. Crypto Operations: During the month of June one 29250 arrived at this squadron from 64^th Air Division for 90 days TDY to temporarily fill the vacancy for a permanently assigned crypto operator. This squadron is authorized one 29250 and one 29230. In the past 60 days frequent follow-up action has been taken in the form of letters and telephone conversations between this squadron and 64^th Air Division concerning this shortage.
6. Wire Maintenance: Detachment #1: Routine requisition was submitted to base supply in January 1958 for 1000 ft of wire, 2 pair #13 AWG. Subject requisitions was upgraded to emergency during June. This wire will be used for running telephone lines throughout the site.
1. We are still waiting for parts to complete UHF-VHF installations.
3. Section III – IE Maintenance:
1. Arrivals:
1. Received one 56170, electrician, S/Sgt. James E. Brooks.
2. Received one 56750, Power Production Operator, Mr. Roger Beausoleil (Civilian).
2. Departures:
1. One 56750 Power Production Operator, Mr. John Carson.
2. One 56751, Electrical Power Production Repairman, Mr. Neville Rioxdan.
3. Two 56550, Heating Plant Operator, Mr. Dinn and Mr. Gear.
3. Heating Plant:
1. Cleaned and repaired boiler #1.
2. Performed general maintenance.
4. Power Plant:
1. Unit #1 has been running continually on fuel oil brought from tank #2 (1957 bulk shipment) until Saturday, 21 June when we received our supply by the pump house from tank #2 and filled our storage tanks, the test on Unit #1 proved the previous fuel had been unsuitable by the number of hours between injector changes before tests 100 hours to 120 hours running time, during tests approximately 550 hours running time.
2. Engine #8 has been overhauled by Canadian Marconi overhaul team in approximately seven days and is now operating satisfactorily under load. Panel Board #8, exciter, alternator, and radiator have been checked by Marconi Electrical Engineer calibrated and readjusted to operating specifications. Units #5, 6, 8 and also Tropo Unit #3 have been fitted with the heavier fly wheels. All scheduled maintenance was performed as required.

 

5. Electrical Shop:
1. Moved Radio Building from back of BX to Motor Pool for the storage of electrical equipment.
2. Performed general maintenance.
3. Renovated the wiring in the Lower Camp and connected it to the base load.
6. Refrigeration Shop:
1. Performed general maintenance.
7. Roads and Grounds:
1. Moved dirt from Lower Camp for resurfacing of roads.
2. Head gaskets were replace on water pumps
3. Oil fired stoves were put in working condition at low camp to heat buildings for incoming maintenance team.
4. Due to testing of overhauled engines in Power Plant it was necessary to haul fuel from POL area for this test. Bypass was put into operation at POL Pump House in order to pump 1957 bulk diesel fuel to the Power Plant
5. The ship Trepassey arrived 15 June with parts for the Marconi Team and was unloaded by this section.
6. Replaced and anchored power distribution poles that were blown down during a storm.
7. Performed general maintenance.
8. Motor Pool:
1. Motor Pool floor has been painted.
2. Truck ¼ ton 4X4, Utility 51K5349 has been deadlined for front wheel bearings.
3. Truck ¾ ton 4X4, Cargo still deadlined for rear axles.
4. Caterpillar D-8, 51D3444 deadlined for a crankshaft for the pony engine. The crankshaft was requisitioned 20 Mar 58.
5. Fork Lift, 53e1105 deadlined for six volts battery.
6. Arc Welder 300 amps, deadlined for six volts battery.
7. Other vehicles are getting in very bad condition due to man power and lack of parts for equipment. All the above parts are on emergency requisition, some parts have been re-ordered.
8. Repaired all valves in POL Pump House.
9. Scheduled maintenance on vehicles are up to date.
