Friday – Snowing again. Quiet day on station. F/O Tetley arrived on the station today.

Saturday – Station quiet with a great many people going off the station for Christmas shopping and the Liberty Run was filled to capacity. Dance in Rec. Hall in the evening.

Sunday – Snow and extremely high winds. RC Church services.

Monday – F/O Hind and F/O McCauley arrived today. Heavy snowfall all day.

Tuesday – CO’s Conference in the morning. Promotion Board held in the afternoon. Snow flurries during the day.

7 Dec 55

Wednesday – Clear and cold most of the day with occasional snow flurries. W/C Kent, SOPA, arrived late this afternoon. F/O Beauser and F/O Kinnard, Aux. Squadron arrived today.

Thursday – Beautiful winter day with bright sunshine. Command Auditors, S/L Whiteford, F/L Freebain and F/O Hynd arrived today. F/O Moore returned after course at Tyndall, Florida.

Friday – S/L Whiteford, F/L Freebain, F/O Hynd left today. F/O Welsh left today for Chatham. F/L Twambley left for Montreal. Mess Dinner at Officers Mess. Snow flurries all day. Sgt and Mrs. Trahan became the proud parents of a baby girl. F/L Thompson arrived today.

Saturday – Quiet day on the Station with snow all day.

Sunday – Services in both Protestant and RC churches. Also, Protestant Sunday School was held in the morning. Snow most of the day. F/O Beauset and F/O Kinnaird left today.

Monday – Cold and snowy most of the day. Uneventful. P/O Tarantello received her F/O today.

Tuesday – Heavy snowfall during the day. CO’s Conference in the morning. Trade Board Examinations this morning with F/L Craig presiding and 47 candidates writing.

Wednesday – S/L Murchison, Legal Officer and F/O Tracey, Welfare Officer arrived from ADC.

Thursday – S/L Murchison and F/O Tracey left today. Snow began in the evening and continued steadily.

Friday – Snow all day today. Mr. Farr of RCA Victor left today. Combined School closing in the evening at the Station Theatre.

Saturday – Children’s Christmas Party held in the Rec. Centre this afternoon with Santa holding court and the children received many fine gifts.

Sunday – Extremely cold. Quiet on the station. RC Church services in the afternoon.

Monday – Another day of extreme cold. Uneventful on the station.

Wednesday – The last Bingo of the season held tonight. Ops party in the Rec. Hall after the Bingo. Extremely cold.

Thursday – Many Christmas parties on the station. Admin. party, Supply and Snack Bar and Guardhouse.

Friday – This afternoon many left for Christmas leave with the Liberty Run going at 1330 hours. Protestant Chapel facilities decorated for Christmas Eve service this afternoon.

Saturday – Midnight Mass and Christmas Eve services in both RC and Protestant Churches. All canteens, Snack Bar etc closed early. W/C Marcou addressed the unit over station MARS.

Sunday – Christmas Day with all on the station enjoying the festivities.

Monday – Boxing Day. Quiet on the station with many enjoying the winter weather and new skis and toboggans getting a work out.

Tuesday – No CO’s Conference this morning because of Christmas leave for many concerned. A beautiful day with many still away on Christmas leave.

Wednesday – Beautiful day on the station. F/O and Mrs. Sands become the proud parents of another boy.

Friday – Clear and cold. Bagotville girls basketball team here in the evening to play Mont Apica girls. The game was delayed because Bagotville bus stuck in snow.

Saturday – Cold with occasional snow. Record dance in Rec. Hall in evening. Mont Apica hockey team returned from playing St. Sylvestre at Quebec City – bruised and beaten. Score 6 – 1.

Wednesday – Women’s Auxiliary held successful bake sale in the evening prior to Bingo. RC Church services in the evening this being Ash Wednesday.

Thursday – Beautiful sunny day, preparations on for the Winter Carnival. LAW O’Byrne was crowned Queen of Winter Carnival for 1956.

Friday – Busy day with G/C Willis coming in the afternoon. Winter Carnival progresses with children’s sports events in afternoon and Millionaire Night in Rec. Hall in evening. Curling team left for Kenogami.

Saturday – Cold snowy day for Winter Carnival final day. Outdoor events all day, with Airmen winning the most points. Dance in the evening. W/C Snider off to Tyndall.

Thursday – "Tinker Bell" delayed 24 hours. All MG Squadron aircraft grounded due to de-icing fluid in Hydraulic system. Rhubarb are to scramble in emergency only. Bagotville aircraft will not take part in Exercise "Tinker Bell" tonight. Due to unserviceabilities, 432 shut down and not being able to carry out lead collision tactics. 432 Squadron serviceable again. Largo notified.

Friday – "Tinker Bell" postponed 24 hours. Scabbard on standby GCI at 0400Z instead of 0430Z so maintenance could be finished by the end of the shift. Power failure at 1222Z. Diesel water intake froze over. Water shorted out power. Out for 5 minutes. Radar out for 43 minutes. Operation Canteen in progress. Intercept action taken. Operation Tinker Bell delayed 24 hours.

Saturday – Bagotville carrying out night flying. 0540Z Largo informed Scabbard of Faker activity at 1000Z. 1142Z MG informed that all aircraft are unserviceable. No scrambles. Tinker Bell delayed further 24 hours – new dates 6 – 7 – 8 Feb.

Monday – Harlequin weekly training report sent to Largo. Signal AC 13, Duty Controller F/O Healey-Ogden called Largo re Tinker Bell. Authorized to scramble 15 minutes aircraft only if squadrons wish to take off. 432 Squadron will scramble on 1st and 3rd wave if possible. 440 Squadron will scramble on 2nd wave. Two waves of Tinker Bell aircraft through – aircraft scrambled. 1 July – 4 B-47’s visual. 3rd wave of Tinker Bell cancelled. 1 Moby Dick balloon sighted at 0615Z. COC request all information on Moby Dick, last position GC 3040. 1 unknown track LFP. Techs reported trouble with the Magnetron on the Early Warning Kit.

Tuesday – Operation Tinker Bell – "Amaze" through operation Swan Dive – "Ajax" and Granville through. Remainder of Ajax – Rockman – Granville and Octave delayed 12 hours. Largo informs we are to take no participation in Tinker Bell. Largo advises that between6, 7, 8 aircraft will be available for scramble at 0800Z 8 Feb 56.

Wednesday – Two MG aircraft available for interception of SAC overfly. Largo DC advised us that Part 2 of operation Swan Dive postponed to 1400Z 9 Feb. This includes Octave, Rocky, Granville and Ajax. Tinker Bell postponed to 8 Feb 2330Z. Components Rockman and Granville of exercise Tinker Bell intercepted.

Thursday – Components Amage of Exercise Tinker Bell intercepted. Harlequin exercises carried out during the day. One unknown track identified as Rockman 38 returning home from exercise.

Friday – Normal day. GCI exercises carried out. One unknown track WG11L intercepted and identified as one commercial DC-3 at 8000 feet.

Saturday – Tinker Bell carried out. Intercept action was taken. One Moby Dick balloon intercepted by SS 5. Bagotville closed due to no Breaking Action. Exercise Granville delayed 2 ½ hours.

Sunday – Component Granville of Exercise Swan Dive passed through our sub sector. No intercept action taken due to runway conditions in Bagotville. Clearance to Smokey Hill, Kansas obtained for Granville 29 via Largo. Signal AC 745 re SAC overfly was received. Last flight of Granville came through. Largo informed us not to scramble on this exercise.

Monday – Harlequin exercises carried out during day. Two aircraft showing made four but were OK otherwise it was a very quiet day.

Tuesday – Exercise War Dance penetrated this sub-sector. GCI was carried out on this exercise with good results. Traffic was very heavy during the exercise with KC-97’s and B-47’s refuelling.

15 Feb 56

Wednesday – Exercise War Dance was on again today. GCI results were very good. KC-07’s came through as well as the B-47’s. B-47’s employing evasive action. This action was very good against Harlequins. With single aircraft the intercept results were better.

Thursday – Last phase of exercise War Dance penetrated. Intercept action was taken. 22 B-47’s were in the exercise. Very good results in surveillance.

Friday – Scabbard was off for emergency maintenance.. A/C Gilchrist requested a Harlequin exercise be carried out on his aircraft by 440 and 432 Squadrons. Exercise Big Apple was cancelled.

Saturday – Solar interference was noticed at 110 degrees at 1153Z and also at 255 degrees at 2208Z. Octave 11 passed through the area. He was KSZ. All microwave lines were out at 2238Z. Quebec City Auxiliary personnel arrived for duty.

Sunday – SS4, 11, 14 up on Harlequin exercise under our control. Exercise Tinker Bell went through also. High Flight Bravo – 4 T-33’s – PQI – YY – ZV. Search became unserviceable at 2125Z. VL Ops GCI on 6B only. 300 PRF and tilt at 1.5 electrical.

Monday – The EW Kit has been unserviceable all day. CPS-6B on 300 PRF and tilt of 1.5 Electrical. Routine day, nothing exciting.

Tuesday – The EW Kit was repaired during weekly maintenance but became unserviceable at 2209Z. The motor generator unserviceable. Harlequin exercise was carried out with 440 Squadron 4 to 1. Traffic was normal.

Wednesday – The EW Kit was repaired and is now serviceable. The traffic has been routine. No SAC overflies. RB 6 damaged his windshield on takeoff. He was OK. Nothing exciting today.

Thursday – VC 916 a DC-3 was up on a Chaff dropping exercise. He was scrambled on and intercepted. The traffic was very normal. Bagotville was snowed in for a while, 10 inches of snow on the runways. WG 55 re-designated VL 16. Unknown was intercepted and found to be a Lockheed Hudson TCY. 2452 AC&W Controllers arrived for Reserve Training.

Friday – Scabbard was off for emergency maintenance – the range markers were off 10 degrees and could not go over 5 RPM. It was a normal day with little air activity.

Saturday – The antenna synchro became unserviceable at 0200Z. Became serviceable at 0430Z. Crowbar warning told 10 KC-97’s to us. They were on their way to Sheppard AFB. Sideburn 10 doing all PXing for Squadron. Routine day, very little doing.

Sunday – The air activity was very light due to snow storm. Bagotville had 10 inches of snow on the runways. The VC was turned off at 0630Z. The EW Kit became unserviceable at 2055Z. CPS-6B tilt reduced to 2.9 degrees. CPS-6B remained at 600 PRF. It would not stay at 300 PRF.

Sunday – Reserve controllers worked with RB 7 and 11. Mild sunny day – Thaw commenced on Tower road.

Monday – Exercise Amaze scheduled for 0730Z 19 Mar – RB12 scrambled on B-47’s of this overfly – due to faulty warning – scramble too late – RB 12 passed 3000 – 4000 feet below B-47’s. Tail chase given up as no closing speed evident.

20 Mar 56

Tuesday – STelO at Bagotville advised Scabbard that Roberval reported two 4 engine aircraft of B-29 type flying tree-top level crossed Roberval heading toward Bagotville. Rhubarb 14 was scrambled and commenced low-level recce of the area. Two unknowns were picked up 210/60 nm heading south. RB14 was vectored on tail chase and RB6 on local flying monitoring frequency joined the chase. These two aircraft pressed home the chase and identified two B-29’s north of Montreal after handover to Crystal. RB aircraft landed at St. Hubert short of fuel. Later Largo passed on Amazon’s thanks for this work and radar plots. This exercise was laid on by Colorado Springs in attempt to show penetration of low-level aircraft.

Wednesday – Exercise Big Wind SAC overfly. Four multi aircraft tracks southbound simultaneously. Eight Bagotville CF-100’s were scrambled on this exercise – all got kills "batting average good". The evening shift experienced mechanical jamming 060/65-80 nm – RB12 intercepted jammer. Ident as DC-3 #665. Communication jamming also accompanied mechanical jamming. Further air activity took place against VA42 (Frogman 31) one B-47.

Thursday – Exercise Big Wind aircraft came through NJ 26 was intercepted by NJ 36 and 42. Ident as 4 B-47’s – Cocked Pistol called at 0341Z. Wrong alarm given on Townsite once again. At 0418Z stand-by crew on duty. Four scrambles took place and all aircraft made successful missions. Cocked Pistol terminated at 0735Z. Further activity during the afternoon on Exercise Big Wind – 4 more scrambles with all aircraft having successful missions. RN 31 returned to base with an engine fire (port). Landed OK.

Friday – Communication jamming exercise – RN 38 intercepted jammer VL14L. No SAC activity today. Normal activity.

Thursday – Exercise "Ringbolt" SAC to overfly this area. Bagotville aircraft took part – Scrambles and intercepts carried out – still having trouble with search gear (EW Kit) – Day staff remained through evening shift for exercise Darwin.

Friday – Exercise "Darwin" DAC overfly through this area – These B-47 aircraft at 50 – 60 mile intervals and Harlequin tactics used with fighter aircraft in pairs. Day controllers worked throughout evening shift on stand-by. GCI activity was at high level. Biggest problem encountered was warning telling from Crowbar. Many tracks changed numbers several times. Radar Techs left tilt at 28 degrees on CPS-6B. Not noticed until attempt to track B-47’s was made – tilt lowered and tracking was good.

Saturday – Exercise "Darwin" SAC overfly second night – heavy fighter participation from Bagotville (Friday evening local time). Scabbard did a good job on plotting telling and GCI was very successful. Exercise went better than previous evening – (Friday evening local time). S/L Levesque, of 1 Group HQ, F/L Goulet and F/L Cote of Quebec Auxiliary, attended meeting with S/L Yarnell, F/L Twambley, F/L MacLean and F/O Todd of this unit to discuss Auxiliary training and to iron out some problems as to summer camp – Evaluation etc. (F/O Morrisons farewell party in the Mess).

Monday – F/O Gatz off for Yuma. Normal day operations. SAC overfly this evening – Extra controllers required to handle GCI commitment – Heavy fighter activity on B-47’s. Exercise commenced approximately 2100 hours local to 2345 hours local. F/O Morrison off on transfer to Comox.

Tuesday – Bagotville aircraft scrambled in pairs for Eaglebeak control against SAC Bighorn (15 – B-47’s all outside our area). Exercise Sea Devil to take place this evening. SAC commenced about 2100 hours. Heavy fighter participation. Extra controllers up – F/O Gaston off on annual leave.

Wednesday – SAC overfly Sea Devil carried through and overlapped SAC overfly Anchor. Heavy fighter participation until 0230 hours (long night for all). Day activity quiet due to expected SAC activity throughout the night. Activity commenced at 2130 hours – extra controllers up.

Thursday – SAC overfly and fighter/GCI work carried on until 0230 hours. Heavy fighter participation – long but worthwhile night for all those working extra time. During day shift a triangle was observed flown by a track between Umpire and Eaglebeak. RB 21 dispatched to investigate but Super Duper Tango One arrived on scene first and escorted civilian to airport. RB 21 returned to base – normal day activity – Sea Devil on again this evening.

Friday – Heavy GCI/Fighter activity commenced 2100 hours on 12 Apr. All day staff up again – All available scopes in use from start to finish 0530 hours. 440 Squadron did wonderful job of maintaining flying throughout the night. Normal GCI/AI continued throughout the day.

Saturday – Very quiet day. Welcome change after succession of SAC overflies. Farewell party in Mess for Della Stua. Day staff tired and worn, seemed to get renewed life or spirits again.

Saturday – Quiet day – 1 scramble on Pan Am DE7, unknown. Clipper 71 civilian also given assistance 150 miles of route. Some GCI/AI during the evening.

Sunday – Normal GCI/AI operations through the day and evening. Assistance given to civil North Star CF-TCV uncertain of position. Was all OK.

Monday – Big deal all day reference 1 B-47 flying Montreal to Goose Bay. We were to intercept with Harlequin tactics (2 fighters). After 6 hours of arranging Bagotville was advised they would not be used. At about 1500 hours squawk 4 was picked up from Black Sheep 29 – one engine out and radio was acting up. Scooter picked him up and handed him over to Scabbard. He was taken for a straight in approach at Quebec City. Got down OK. GCI/AI work during evening.

Tuesday – Very quiet day operationally. Unknown object sighting west of unit. Brought to the attention of Duty Controller by power plant operator. Bright orange gall in the sky slowly faded. Did not move. One CF-100 was brought through this area but sighted nothing.

Wednesday – ECM exercise today. 1 B-29 dropping chaff. Fighter activity out of Bagotville against this aircraft. Some handed over to Umpire. Some lack of coordination runs by Umpire. Simultaneous attacks from opposite side turning target while Scabbard on final attack. Possibly unintentional.

Thursday – Normal GCI activity – Harlequin practices. One section of 432 airborne when Bagotville notified Scabbard the RB4 has a bad undercarriage and expected a forced landing. All sections returned to base. F/L Norman stayed airborne with F/O Pierce (RBG) to offer any suggestions or assistance. Norman suggested bail out. Both pilot and Navigator bailed out 4000 feet over Bagotville heading 200 degrees. Norman followed abandoned aircraft and pinpointed wreck. Pilot and Nav OK. Tone heard on 121.5 and Squawk 4 observed from bailout until crash.

Friday – Further activity on above SAC overfly. Most of Bagotville aircraft to Umpire who scrambled without advising this unit. We managed to get one aircraft – 5 controllers to be on at 0800 hours 5 May.

Saturday – Trials to commence using 5 aircraft, 5 controllers, 5 channels – aircraft to be carried in trail to attack same targets – aircraft to take off at 1 minute interval to fighter marshal and thence handed over to individual controllers – five fighters off good controlling – no pick up on target until out of position – second target again picked up when target out of position – RN 31 tried tail chase – no joy – all five returned to base with no TAC results. Second 5 aircraft scrambled (reverse scramble) – Good results on this run – overlays made.

Sunday – Normal GCI operations – Faker activity in evening but no pick up by this unit so no TAC action.

Monday – Another multiple fighter – target exercise using 4 CF-100’s as targets with 4 CF-100’s as fighters – separate channel and controllers – 3 out of 4 fighters successful – overlays made – Umpire also participated.

Tuesday – Repeat multiple fighter exercise run today – targets to go to Seven Islands and return. Four fighters off – 1 abort to pressurization after aborting became serviceable again – due to reverse scramble was able to rejoin formation. 4 Judy’s – 2 splashes. Exercise proved successful. Fighter Marshal considered necessary and full briefing on all aspects.

Wednesday – Normal GCI day – Largo changed 10 May maintenance to allow another multiple fighter exercise – Fakers to penetrate from north.

Thursday – Snowed all night – Fakers off St. Hubert – Bagotville aircraft scrambled to briefed altitude – Fakers flew 5,000 feet higher than briefed – exercise successful on tracking and attack but little results due to altitude changes.

Saturday – Normal GCI – TX site struck by lightning at 09:30 pm. All transmitters out – no electrician available to reset fuses for several hours. Reduced to EW – During this time Umpire made scrambles and had power failure also.

Friday – Multiple Faker exercise – 3 fighters scrambled. All successful. Aircraft over Quebec City flying right hand triangle. An intercept proved it to be 1 CF-100 out of experimental unit Quebec City doing engine re-lights. No emergency.

Thursday – Multiple Faker exercise for Scooter – 6 aircraft scrambled for their control. No Scabbard activity on this exercise.

Saturday – One friendly Faker exercise – intercepted by Bagotville aircraft under Scabbard control.

Monday – Two CF-100 up as friendly Fakers. Scrambled 2 CF-100 to intercept – both obtained Judy’s – 1 splash, 1 broke off stern chase. Re-attacked 2 Judy’s – targets took evasive action – no tactical results.

Tuesday – Random flight from St. Hubert to Goose Bay. Six sections required surveillance. Multiple fighter/target exercise again today. Scabbard to have 3 fighters for individual control.

Wednesday – Normal GCI activity – Largo advises another multiple Faker practice tomorrow. Scooter and Umpire controlling, Scabbard to monitor 1222.
