Sunday – Winter is really here. The snow banks are piled high and it is very cold today.

Monday – The Commanding Officer has returned from his vacation in Puerto Rico. The new Padre – F/L Lord – came in today. Visitors from ADC and AFHQ in connection with Telecom Section.

Wednesday – RCA Victor helicopter came in today with RCA personnel to test for TV reception at Mont Apica. The CO and CAdO had a trip in the helicopter.

Thursday – Mr. Buchan from AFHQ arrived to inspect the new Swimming Pool, MR Garage, etc. which are under construction.

Friday – They have been working the road outside the camp gate all week and blasting at intervals. The work being in connection with the water mains.

Sunday – The ski-tow was in operation today for the first time this winter.

Thursday – It has snowed every day this week and today we are having a real snowstorm which makes it difficult to get about the station.

Friday – F/L Marcotte from ADCHQ departed today. He had been on the unit all week on a supply inspection.

Monday – The proposed visit to the unit by the CAS was cancelled.

Thursday – The power was off during the night and for an hour and a half this morning.

Tuesday – Christmas Eve – Midnight Mass (RC) and Protestant Communion Service was held at 2330 hours.

Wednesday – Christmas Day – There were the usual Mess activities with the CO and officers serving the airmen and airwomen Xmas Dinner. LAW Pippus was crowned Snowbowl Queen, her reign to last until the Snowbowl Game to be held on New Years Day.

Saturday – The Cpls. Club opened its new premises tonight with a successful party.

Monday – There were two promotions on the station. F/O GR Scott and F/O WG Standing being promoted to Flight Lieutenant.

Tuesday – New Years Eve – Dances were held in all the messes to welcome the New Year.

Wednesday – New Years Day – The annual Snowbowl Game between the Officers and the Senior NCO’s was played at 9 am in snow flurries. The Senior NCO’s being the victors. This was followed by a celebration party in the Sgts. Mess.

Friday – An exceptionally cold day with the temperature standing at minus 30 degrees this morning.

Sunday – The new indoor Swimming Pool which has just been opened was a very popular place.

Monday – The new CEO – F/O Hyslop – reported in today.

Saturday – W/C Taschereau and four Auxiliary officers were in for training conference this week from Quebec City.

Sunday – The Airwomen’s basketball team, playing at Mont Apica, beat the Bagotville team for the second time.

Saturday – The unit was visited and entertained by the Bell Telephone Show company – who gave a two hour show in the Rec. Hall to a large and appreciative audience. The members of the company were afterwards entertained in the Officers and Sgts. Mess.

Monday – Another very cold morning with the temperature thirty below. The CO and COpsO left for ADC today. The CTSO will be Acting CO.

Friday – The CO back on the unit. The CO and other members of the Officers Mess went to Bagotville for an address being given by G/C Gwinn and Dr. Lindsey, both of who afterwards returned to Mont Apica with the CO for a Mess Dinner.

Saturday – Two basketball teams together with their supporters from St. Sylvestre were on the station today.

Sunday – The SMO ordered the ski-tow closed today due to the thaw making it dangerous for skiers.

Monday – Controller Evaluating Team arrived today from ADC – the members of the team being S/L Bishop, S/L King, F/L Loney, F/L Wolff and F/O Richardson.

Thursday – The visiting Evaluation Team departed for Bagotville.

Friday – The CO went to Bagotville today for a debriefing in connection with this weeks exercise.

Saturday – The Airmen’s Institute held a Sleigh Ride this evening followed by a "Sock Dance".

Monday – We had our heaviest snowfall of the season overnight, when at least 8 inches fell, and it continued snowing throughout the day. The station Curling Club commenced operation, in temporary quarters in a disused contractor’s hut.

Tuesday – The station was visited by A/C Bradshaw today. The ski-tow was re-opened today.

Thursday – F/O JR Mawdsley, the new TelO2, reported in today.

Monday – S/L Mock was chairman of a Board of Trade Exam failures. G/C Ashman, S/L Haley and S/L Allison from Bagotville were on the station this evening for a briefing.

Tuesday – The CO, together with CTSO and CAdO, went to Bagotville flying. The SMO, F/L Rutherford, left on a months annual leave, and Dr. Turcotte of Quebec City came in as his replacement. The first serious accident occurred on the ski-tow today when Cpl. Morris broke her leg.

Friday – The CO, CTSO and CAdO, returned to the station this evening.

Friday – W/C and Mrs. Braham and S/L and Mrs. Allison from station Bagotville were the guests of honor at a mixed Dining-In Night in the Officers Mess.

Saturday – The first day of the Winter Carnival Week. The Carnival Queen being LAW Betty Cameron and the two Princesses LAW’s Mary Leeson and Colleen McCormick. The CO opened the Carnival by crowning the Queen at 1900 hours and this ceremony was followed by a Millionaires Night.

Monday – Continuing with the Winter Carnival Week, there was a Bean Supper followed by an Old Times Dance this evening.

Tuesday – The weather has been unseasonably mild for the past ten days and the station Curling Bonspiel planned for this week had to be cancelled because of the melting ice.

Wednesday – A toboggan competition was held this evening between the Officers and Senior NCO’s, and this event was followed by a Spaghetti Supper at 2200 hours in the Airmen’s Institute.

Friday – A Mammoth Bingo was held in the Rec. Hall this evening.

Saturday – The final day of the Carnival Week. A Sports Competition for both service personnel and dependents went on all day. The Women’s Auxiliary operated a Coffee and Hot Dog stand at the Ski-Tow all day, which was a much appreciated service. There was a Firework Display at 1830 hours and a Gala Dance in the Rec. Hall to close the Carnival Week of activities.

Sunday – F/L Lord, the station Padre, went to Bagotville today to perform Baptisms, and F/L Miller the Bagotville Padre came to Mont Apica to conduct Church services.

Monday – The SMO and his family returned from leave in Puerto Rico over the weekend. S/L Hagyard from ADC arrived today to conduct an SOAF Audit. The last game of the hockey season was played in Bagotville this evening. The play-offs will be played during the week.

Wednesday – F/O Downs (RSpec) from ADC came in today in connection with the Command Swimming Meet.

Friday – S/L Hagyard completed the SOAF Audit and returned to ADC this morning. WO Dove received the news that he has been granted his commission effective 1 Apr. Mont Apica lost in the hockey play-offs.

Thursday – We had a visit today from a party of Air Cadets from the Navigational Training School in Winnipeg, who were at Station Bagotville.

Friday – The CO held a station parade this morning for kit inspection. A party of officers from Station Bagotville visited the Officer’s Mess this evening.

Saturday – Approximately 60 Bell Telephone employees from Chicoutimi were visiting on the station during the afternoon and evening, their hosts being the Sgts. Mess. A variety show from the YMCA in Quebec City entertained the station personnel in the Rec. Hall this evening.

Wednesday – F/L WE Bullock getting cleared today before leaving Mont Apica for Ottawa as Reserve Support Officer.

Sunday – The Station Curling Bonspiel was played at Riverbend and the trophy was won by the rink skippered by LAC Lourley.

Monday – Today was Election Day for the civilians on the station and the Voting Booth was set up in the station Post Office.

Tuesday – F/O KA Mayne from Station St. Margarets reported in today on six weeks TD to help relieve our current Controller shortage.

Thursday – The CO and his family left the station for the Easter weekend. S/L Dewan being the Acting CO.

Friday – The Padre held Good Friday services this morning.

Thursday – F/O MA Stewart, PAdO, on clearances today. The Mont Apica swimming team won the ADC Swimming Meet.

Monday – F/O LE Barraud, the new PAdO, reported in today from Station Edgar.

Tuesday – Personnel writing their Trade Board today.

Monday – The new Supply Officer, F/O D Cordukes, reported in today.

Wednesday – It has been raining for the past three days and as a result, part of the road in the PMQ area was nearly washed out during the night.

Friday – A/C and Mrs. Bradshaw arrived on the station in time for lunch – Mrs. Bradshaw at the CO’s residence and the Air Commodore with a party of Section Heads in the Officer’s Mess. The Air Commodore and his wife were guests of honour at a Mess Dinner in the Officer’s Mess in the evening when a small presentation was made to them. It was snowing again today and everything was soon white once more.

Monday – The CO has gone to St. Hubert for the CO’s Conference being held this week. In his absence, S/L Dewan will be the Acting CO.

Friday – We had snow again this morning. A Mess Dinner was held in the Airmen’s Institute this evening which was very well attended.

Saturday – The CO was back on the station today after being away all week attending the CO’s Conference at St. Hubert.

Monday – F/O’s Cordukes, Griba, and Worthy, and F.L Pearson all were in the Headquarters building to meet the CO this afternoon – all of them having arrived on the unit last week during his absence.

Wednesday – The CO, together with the CAdO, went to Quebec City this afternoon on TD in connection with the Auxiliary summer training program. F/L Tanner was in on TD in connection with the forthcoming Burnt Cork exercise.

Friday – The CO and CAdO were back on the station this afternoon.

Saturday – A large party of the local Boy Scout Association, and their wives, were on the station today. A security check was carried out by an ADC team headed by F/L Howson this evening. All members of the "raiding party" were caught before there was any serious breach of security.

Monday – The CO was flying today and the COpsO – S/L Dewan – was Acting CO. The new Nursing Sister, F/O Ann Woodward, arrived on the station today.

Tuesday – The CO returned early this evening.

Sunday – The station ball team went to Kenogami to play in the Lac St. Jean league, and won.

Wednesday – S/L Card from ADCHQ was in today in connection with the annual staff visit primarily concerned with communications, and S/L Robertson, who is the Burnt Cork co-ordinator from AFHQ.

Thursday – F/L Strang of AFHQ and F/L Robert of ADCHQ were on the unit today in connection with Airwomen’s welfare.

Sunday – We had the first of our airsprays today to combat the Black Fly menace.

Monday – Airspray again this afternoon.

Tuesday – Letter received today from ADC announcing the station team had won the ADC Small Bore Rifle Competition. The team comprising the following: F/O TM Anderson, F/L WG Standing, WO1 PA Thompson, and LAC’s Hebb and Lavallee.

Thursday – There was an accident on the road immediately outside camp this evening, between one of our vehicles and a PMC. No one was seriously injured but there was extensive damage to the vehicles.

Friday – F/O EL Sauve and family departed from PMQ’s today.

Monday – At 1631Z on emergency maintenance until 1705Z.

Wednesday – RCA helicopter lands at 1751Z. At 1900Z Fricasie 1 commenced ECM exercise.

Thursday – At 1138Z VL7 was declared unknown. Mogul 10 was scrambled but VL7 identified friendly prior to intercept.

Sunday – F/O MA Sole SOS on release. F/O MJ Sigouin reported on period of special duty.

Monday – F/O D Janes, AS/FtrC, SOS on transfer overseas.

Tuesday – At 1513Z Mogul 17 flamed out port engine and requested GCI-GCA. Relit and landed safely.

Wednesday – At 2309Z, Rhino 17 and 24 were scrambled against an overfly of 21 B-47’s. At 2350Z Rhino 17 and 24 obtained an MA on AB82 (Ring Bolt 9).

Thursday – At 0002Z Rhino 24 1 MA – Rhino 17 1 MI on AAI. At 0020Z Rhino 24 and 17 2MI on AA5.

Friday – At 2108Z VL11 was designated unknown. Mogul 13 was diverted and identified 1 DC-3. At 2222Z Rhino Alpha (strength 2) was scrambled against exercise Pacesetter. 2 MI (AD54) and 2 MA (AB82). At 2328Z Mogul Charlie was scrambled and at 2355Z Mogul Delta. Mogul Delta 1 ground aborted. Mogul Delta 2 had 1 MI and 1 MA. At 2359Z Mogul Echo lead was scrambled.

Saturday – At 0015Z Mogul Echo 2 aborted. At 0037Z Mogul Delta had 1 MA. At 0051Z Mogul India Lead scrambled and had 1 MA and 1 MI.

Sunday – F/L Harris returned from TD to 1 ADCC.

Tuesday – At 1822Z Mogul Charlie scrambled on exercise Cue Ball. Charlie 1 TR 3 CFs – Charlie 2 had 1 MI.

Wednesday – At 0510Z CBJ transmitter available for Dawn Dance (Broadcast Control). Six aircraft were scrambled, 1 aborted and 5 obtained MA’s. At 2357Z VA3L was made unknown. F/O Moore returned from TD at Cold Lake.

Thursday – At 0029Z Mogul 19 identified VA3L as 1 Lancaster. The night was interrupted by a series of power failures, which caused a malfunction of the radar.

Friday – At 2000Z VL9 was made unknown but no scramble because of weather. VL9 identified friendly by flight plan revision. F/O Sauve returned from Cold Lake.

Sunday – Rhino 20 carries out weather and radar evaluation flight.

Tuesday – At 0130Z, Mogul 26 takeoff from VN, for run on Ringbolt 63 (identified as 1 B-47).

Wednesday – Punchbowl 24 carries out a weather and radar evaluation run.

Thursday – Rhino 5 for weather and radar evaluation flight. Weather deteriorates – mandatory scramble.

Friday – Blacksheep 7 for weather and evaluation flight.

Saturday – Rhino 27 for weather and radar evaluation. F/O MJ Sigouin was SOS on return to 2452 (Aux.) Squadron.

Sunday – Punchbowl 3 for evaluation run.

Monday – Mogul 11 for evaluation flight.

Tuesday – Blacksheep 26 for evaluation flight.

Wednesday – Radar evaluation flight cancelled.

Sunday – MCL penetration at 0011Z WYX1 – Mogul 6 and 12 scrambled against this for VA.

Monday – At 1602Z, 8 aircraft were allotted to VL to be used against Fricasie 3 – Rhino Bravo and Rhino Charlie were scrambled at 1704Z. Bravo 2 aborting. 2 MA – 3 MI were obtained when Fricasie 3 aborted because of weather. At 1755Z Rhino 25 was diverted for an unknown – identified friendly 1 DC-6 USAF at 1815Z.

Tuesday – Mogul 20 for weather and evaluation.

Wednesday – Mogul 6 was scrambled at 1353Z for MCL penetration. Largo cancelled scramble but as 6 was airborne he performed an evaluation flight. At 1941Z VL10 was made unknown and Mogul 11 and 17 were diverted – the track was identified friendly by intercept – 1 North Star.

Thursday – 1700Z Cocked Pistol – two waves of ECM aircraft came through the sector and a maximum effort exercise continued until 100131Z.

Friday – VL released from Cocked Pistol at 0131Z. At 1657Z Mogul 20 flamed out 35 miles from Bagotville – landed safely.

Saturday – At 0445Z Mogul 8 and 24 were committed against Wedding 51 but called off because of poor position.

Sunday – RCA’s helicopter landed at 1515Z.

Monday – Six CF-100s were scrambled against ECM target Fricasie.

Tuesday – Blacksheep 22 for evaluation flight.

Friday – Bagotville on mandatory scramble.

Sunday – F/O JR Moore, Fighter Controller, SOS on transfer to Station Edgar.

Monday – W/C Snider and S/L Dewan departed on TD to 1 ADCC.

Tuesday – At 1338Z VL2 was declared unknown – at 1402Z VL2 identified friendly by intercept Punchbowl 23 (VL2). Scopes being modified by CGE. 3 CF-100’s were scrambled against 3 B-52 Catnip Charlie – 3 MI – ECM at 1807Z.

Wednesday – At 0046Z 8 CF-100s were scrambled to CAP because of MCL penetration – but no control by VL.

Thursday – At 1544Z Largo advised that no attacks to be made on SAC aircraft. Exercise Barndoor – a triangulation exercise carried out. F/O Hodson left on TF to Cold Lake.

Monday – Monthly maintenance carried out.

Tuesday – Broadcast Control exercise carried out.

Wednesday – At 2102Z a Mayday squawk was reported – Largo advise that it is Punchbowl 1 with VHF unserviceable who is being intercepted by Punchbowl 20 under VK.

Thursday – Broadcast Control exercise carried out.

Friday – Rhino 7 airborne at 1356Z for weather flight.

Monday – Rhino 15 airborne at 1400Z for evaluation flight.

Tuesday – Rhino 1 airborne at 1355Z for evaluation flight.

Wednesday – At 0630Z VC1571 called in to state that he was icing up and could not maintain speed – vectored into Bagotville.

Thursday – At 0437Z emergency maintenance on the CPS-6B. 0623Z Ops/GCI.

Friday – At 1357Z Rhino 21 was airborne for evaluation flight.

Tuesday – No evaluation flight – VC636 asked for surveillance – 1 engine – landed at Bagotville.

Wednesday – Punchbowl 25 landed wheels up at St. Hubert and Hubert fighters diverted to Bagotville.

Thursday – At 0237Z 3 pairs of CF-100 were scrambled for Exercise Civil War. Two aborted and four carried out successful exercise.

Monday – At 1330Z Scabbard went off the air for peaking. F/O Anderson returned from TD at Lac St. Denis.

Thursday – F/O Hodson returned from TD at Cold Lake.

Saturday – Ops/GCI at 1553Z.

Monday – Rhino 17 airborne at 1335Z for evaluation. At 1530Z Rhino 5 and 23 took off on ground mapper exercise (200 miles separation).

Tuesday – At 1312Z Rhino 18 was airborne for weather. Rhino 1 and 8 carried out a ground mapper exercise. Rhino 1 and 8 and 18 recalled because of deteriorating weather.

Wednesday – Rhino 7 carries out weather flight.

Thursday – Rhino 20 carries out weather flight. F/L JH Harrison, F/O M Crombie, F/O WG Willson, F/O GB Smith arrive from Bagotville for cross training.

Friday – F/L Harrison, F/O’s Crombie, Willson, Smith return to Bagotville. At 0020Z Mogul 8 reported northern lights very bright. Check in appropriate direction revealed 5 or 6 echos like chaff drop 325/25 to 85 miles.

Saturday – Rhino 9 for evaluation flight.

Sunday – Rhino 9 airborne at 1400Z for evaluation flight.

Monday – Rhino 8 airborne at 1330Z for evaluation flight. Fricasie 25 carried out Barndoor exercise and 5 Bagotville CF-100s were successful against him.

Tuesday – Several Broadcast Control exercises carried out.

Thursday – An ECM exercise was carried out by 4 pairs of CF-100’s on Fricasie 3.

Sunday – At 2124Z Rhino 8 (armed) was put on 5 minutes for MCL penetration – released to 10 minutes at 2135Z.

Monday – Mogul 20 replaced Mogul 18 as evaluation aircraft for day.

Tuesday – At 1115Z a balloon (125 feet in diameter) was launched from Quebec – radar contact was established at 1121Z. Exercise Shake Up was held an Mogul Bravo (2 MI’s) CF-100 Tinfoil Pink (2 MA’s) F-89 and Tinfoil Brown (1 MA 2 MI’s) F-89 were under control.

Wednesday – Weekly maintenance.

Friday – At 0242Z Rhino 8 and 20 were scrambled for unknown VL2 – identified friendly at 0303Z as 1 CF-100 (Faker Rhino 18).

Sunday – At 1505Z Rhino Charlie 2 identified 2 Canberra’s at 43,000 feet.

Tuesday – F/O KT Mayne, AS/FtrC, arrived on TD for 6 weeks from station St. Margarets.

Tuesday – F/O AT Wood, AS/FtrC, departed on TD to Yuma Arizona for Controller Proficiency course.

Wednesday – Power failure from 0848Z to 0853Z. F/L A Montrose, AS/FtrC, departed on TD to Cold Lake.

Thursday – Rhino Alpha and Bravo (4 CF-100’s) were scrambled on RCAF Comet.

Tuesday – Exercise Shake Up held.

Friday – At 2040Z VL19 was made unknown – identified as 1 DC-4 Nordair by Rhino 9.

Wednesday – At 2215Z Cocked Pistol declared by Sector. The Alert was sounded. At 0008Z Lemon Juice, Jumbo Mike and Rhino November scrambled at 0016Z.

Thursday – At 0043Z Apple Jack declared – Mike (1 MI – 1 MA) November (1 MI – 1 MA) – two sections of F-89’s controlled Purple (2 MA’s) Gold (1 MI – 2 MA’s) Snowman at 0202Z.

Friday – At 1502Z Rhino Bravo scrambled to intercept 1 B-57 (1 MA – 1 MI).

Tuesday – Exercise Shake Up cancelled.

Wednesday – Two pairs of CF-100;s and 1 section of F-89’s scrambled for exercise but withdrawn (fuel).

Monday – IFF is now interrogating Mode 3 at all times.

Wednesday – At 1305Z Jumbo 23 airborne for unknown but called off as unknown identified friendly by flight plan revision. F/L Montrose returned from Cold Lake.

Thursday – F/L CW Pearson, AS/FtrC, was TOS from 2416 AC&W Squadron support – Ottawa.

Friday – F/O W Griba, Air/Obs, was TOS on transfer from 409 (AW) Squadron Comox.

Tuesday – At 1735Z, VL20 (unknown) was identified friendly as 1 Cessna by Blacksheep 15.

Thursday – Three Leeway aircraft (62-57-88) made record runs.

Friday – At 2348Z Rhino 23 squawked Mayday – he was intercepted and led home by Rhino 25.

Monday – F/C MI Brook was TOS from Dollhouse University (Halifax) for summer training.

Tuesday – At 1308Z, exercise Shake Up commenced. UJ Sierra (2 MA’s) UJ Papa (1 abort 1 MA).

Wednesday – F/O KT Mayne returned to St. Margarets. F/O AT Wood returned from Yuma. F/L WE Bullock, AS/FtrC, was SOS on transfer to 2416 AC&W Squadron support (Ottawa).

Thursday – Three Leeway aircraft (61-97-91) performed Big Snow runs. Two pairs of CF-100’s were scrambled for ECM exercise against Fricasie 1.

Friday – F/L D Miller departed to Cold Lake for controller proficiency course.

Saturday – F/O JL Frazer, Air/P, TOS from #4 AFS McDonald. F/O LP Parker, Air/Obs, TOS from 409 (AW) Squadron Comox.

Sunday – VC511 squawked 4 – position AA4030 – short on fuel = had contact with Eskimo.

Monday – Commenced washing radar dome.

Tuesday – Commenced painting radome during daylight hours.

Wednesday – Exercise Dawn Dance – 2 pairs of aircraft. Broadcast difficulty as targets took up wrong positions initially. Rhino Papa 2 squawked Mayday (flame out) but landed safely. Radome painting during day.

Friday – Three Leeway aircraft (59-89-91) carry out Little Snow runs.

Saturday – F/O R Dickner, Air/Obs, TOS from 51 AC&W Squadron Comox. Still painting radome during daytime.

Monday – At 1620Z radome painting was completed.

Tuesday – Jumbo Bravo and Rhino Charlie scrambled for exercise Shake Up. UJC and UJP (F-89’s) were also under our control. UJC (2MA’s) and Rhino Charlie 2 (abort).

Friday – Exercise Cue Ball held – Jumbo Bravo and Charlie – Jumbo Charlie (2 MA’s) at 45,000 – Jumbo Charlie (1 abort – 1 MI 14,000 feet low on Scooter height).

Saturday – F/O DH Wood, Air/P, TOS from Centralia. F/O JAG Babineau, Air/P, TOS from Centralia. Jumbo 17 scrambled at 1352Z for unknown and identified as 1 Norseman CF-CJB, at 3,500 feet.
