F/O Tracey (ASWelO) arrived for one day.

G/C Pollard, Sector Commander # 1 ADCC, and F/L Stanley visited the unit for two days to inspect the operational site.

14 Dec 58

F/O AC Hincke, Air/P, TOS from RCAF Station Penhold after attending the Interception Controllers course at Tyndall AFB, Florida.

15 Dec 58

LAC LA Anderson was injured during snow clearing operations. He was taken to St. Foy Hospital in Quebec.

24 Dec 58

Christmas Eve was marked in both chapels by Candle-light services and Midnight Mass.

25 Dec 58

A special Christmas dinner was served to the airmen and airwomen by the Officers and Senior NCO’s. Turkey with all the trimmings was the attraction for the day. Personnel on duty in the Tower were also served by the CO, COpsO, Padre and other officers working during that period.

The results of Officers promotions were released this date. Promotion to Flight Lieutenant was received by F/O CW Gordon Air/P, F/O GG Holmes Air/P, and F/O HR Hyslop Tech/CE. Permanent commissions were received by F/O CL MacLean and F/O AT Wood, both AS/FtrC. F/O GG Holmes arrived from Tyndall AFB where he had been attending the Interception Controllers course. He was transferred from RCAF Station Moose Jaw.

The Snow Bowl Queen who was chosen by a sale of votes was crowned at the Station Dance. AW1 Joanne Vaughn made an attractive Queen in her robes trimmed with white fur. She was to reign during the parade and Snow Bowl game held on New Year’s Day. The New Year was ushered in, in the traditional way.

This was the day of the annual Snow Bowl Game. The officers challenged the Sr. NCO’s to a game of football in the hopes that they would return the cup to the Officers Mess since it’s presence had been noticeably absent during the past year. The Officers, as last years losers, wore drab overalls while the Sr. NCO’s as champions were colourfully clothed in green sweaters and red toques. The final score was 14 – 0 in favour of the Sr. NCO’s. The officers were able to drown their sorrows after the game when, as guests of the Sr. NCO’s they visited their mess. A gala parade of cares and floats preceded the game.

The Commanding Officer, W/C WL Baynton, started his leave prior to reporting to Tyndall AFB, Panama City, Florida. S/L Dewan is Acting CO during his absence.

F/O KE Mayne, AS/FtrC, from RCAF Station St. Margarets was TOS. F/O DJ Robson, AS/FtrC, was TOS this date from RCAF Station Edgar.

ADCHQ Fire Marshal, F/L JL Cowell, visited the unit on an inspection.

F/L DI Williamson from SORDP – Radar and Data Processing – arrived for 3 days on telecom inspection.

AVM Kerr, AFHQ/AMP, and S/L Chappell, his EA, made a quick visit to Mont Apica. F/O TJ Tracey, ASWelO, arrived for a one day visit.

The Curling Rink was officially opened by G/C Ashman, the Commanding Officer of RCAF Station Bagotville. He later played on a rink skipped by S/L Allison in a Challenge match with Mont Apica. The Mont Apica team skipped by F/O Mawdsley won the closely contested contest.

Curling teams attended Bonspiels at Arvida and QRA St. Hubert. Mont Apica placed fourth in the QRA.

F/O RL Bushell arrived from AFHQ to make a CE inspection.

F/L Walker from ADCHQ arrived for 5 days to do a command audit.

The Station Curling Club sponsored the first annual bonspiel with 16 Service and civilian teams from as far away as RCAF Station Lac St. Denis participating. The standings were: (1) Arvida (2) Mont Apica (3) Dolbeau.

F/O JR Seel arrived to take up duties as controller. He had just completed the course at Tyndall AFB following an AW tour to 428 Squadron, RCAF Station Uplands.

F/O CE Steward was in charge of a party of Air Crew Trainee Flight Cadets who arrived from Winnipeg to do a tour of the station, particularly the Ops. Bldg. F/L R Hyslop, CEO, departed on transfer to 2 CMU, Calgary. W/C JLG Tashereau and other officers from 2452 Squadron (Aux.) attended a conference at Mont Apica to prepare for the annual summer camp.

The ADC Air Staff Visiting Team comprised of Major F Ault (USAF), F/L Warwick (RAF), F/L McNamee of ADCHQ and S/L Simpson and F/L Eddy of 1 ADCC arrived for a four day operational evaluation of the station.

F/L Evoy from ADCHQ/SOMS visited the hospital for a staff inspection.

F/L JC Howard and F/L HB Robinson from AFHQ arrived to deal with a telecom project.

F/O L Barraud, PAdO, left Station Mont Apica on leave to BC, then on transfer to 4 (F) Wing.

F/L SJ Pus, CAdO, was transferred to Maritime Air Command. F/L Styan took over official duties as CAdO. F/O W Griba, having completed his tour of duty was SOS this unit on transfer to RCAF Station Holberg. The Airmen’s Mess Dinner was held and LAC BA Rodgers was presented the much coveted Outstanding Airmen’s Award for the period 1 Jan to 30 Apr 59.

9 May 59

A group of fifty from the Arvida Chamber of Commerce made a tour of the townsite including all recreation facilities, schools, PMQ’s and Messes. After the tour the group was entertained in the Officers Mess.

10 May 59

W/C WL Baynton departed for a liaison visit of RCAF Station Parent.

11 May 59

S/L MacKenzie arrived from Bagotville to audit Messes and Institute Accounting. F/O R Brown arrived to take over duties as controller, following the Tyndall course.

Station Sports Night Dance – trophies were presented to winners in various recreational fields. The dance was generally considered to be very successful.

F/O P Parker left on leave then on transfer to RCAF Station Holberg. The following RCAF Station Bagotville personnel arrived for cross training: F/L Boyer, F/O RL Jensen, F/O Saunders, F/O RG Chester.

"Dog Patch Night" in the Officers Mess. The women of the Mess treated the men folk to "po’k chops" and singing, dancing and all. Excellent floor shows were featured.

Friday – A Mayday squawk and a CW note were detected and traced to Rhino 7 – but it was a malfunction of his equipment.

Saturday – At 0315 hours, 4 CF-100s were scrambled in exercise "Chain Shot". One aborted, 2 MA’s and 1 MI were obtained.

Tuesday – Exercise "Boy Shy" was held – 4 CF-100s committed for 7 MA’s and 1 MI.

Wednesday – Exercise "Flashlight" – Eight CF-100s committed. 2 MA’s – 6 MI’s. At 2115 hours, 2 CF-100s from St. Hubert scrambled against an unknown - 2 MA’s (Ident 1 KC-97).

Thursday – F/L WL Worthy, Air/P, was struck off strength on transfer to Station St. Margarets. Two CF-100s were committed on "Whopper Bravo" – Results 2 MA’s. Cowbell 23 completed ECM Site Run.

Friday – F/O Colbert returned from Bagotville and F/L Freebairn returned from JOAC Course . Between 0147Z and 0649Z – 16 CF-100s were scrambled from Bagotville and St. Hubert on Boneyard 1 (ECM). Results – 35 MA’s and 24 MI’s.

Saturday – F/L Frazer returned from CPU Cold Lake. At 1734Z, 2 CF-100s were committed on a B-47. Results 2 MA’s. Exercise "Whopper Bravo".

Saturday – F/O Lachance, AS/FtrC, taken on strength for 4 weeks special training from 2405 Aux. Squadron.

Monday – F/O Robson departed for Liaison Officer duties at Bagotville.

20 May 59

Wednesday – Jolly 36 (B-52) completed Site Run at 2034Z. Two CF-100s were committed on exercise "Big Blast" – results 2 MA’s.

21 May 59

Thursday – F/O DH Wood, F/O Hincke and F/O Munro were promoted to Flight Lieutenant. Four CF-100s committed on 3 B-52s – results 7 MA’s and 1 MI. Two CF-100s committed on an unknown but broken off prior to intercept. One Site Run completed (Archie 13).

Friday – F/L Yuill returned from TD at 1 ADCC Lac St. Denis.

Monday – F/O W Griba, Air/Obs, was struck off strength on transfer to Holberg.

26 May 59

Tuesday – Eight ECM Site Runs were completed – Exercise "Private Eye" was completed with 4 CF-100s being scrambled – results 8 MA’s and 2 MI’s.

27 May 59

Wednesday – Exercise "Cold Wind" was held. Five CF-100s and 1 F-89 were committed. Results 6 MA’s. Seven Site Runs (ECM) were completed.

28 May 59

Thursday – Eight Site Runs were completed. Two forest fires sighted and reports passed on.

29 May 59

Friday – Six ECM Site Runs completed.
