Helicopter landed in connection with Operation GATR. F/L CD Conn arrived from AFHQ for routine security investigations. Summer F/C’s arrived to complete various phases of their training. F/C R Therein, ROTP trainee, is holding the position of Assistant CE Officer. F/C G Steiner, ROTP Cadet from McGill, is completing this third summer of training as Telecom Officer. F/C D Hillborn, Queen’s Medical Student, is a URTP trainee employed in the Station Hospital.

W/C JC Hovey from 1 ADCC spent four days at Mont Apica for familiarization in operations. F/L M Holbow reported in to relieve Padre Lord of his clerical duties while the Padre is at "The Retreat". An organized farewell party was given for F/L J Frazer, on transfer to RCAF Station Edgar.

F/L Frazer left this am enroute to Station Edgar. Officers travelled by bus to Quebec City for an exchange evening with 2452 AC&W Squadron (Aux.). W/C Baynton presented W/C Tashereau, retiring CO, with a memento from the Mont Apica officers.

The Jonquiere Chamber of Commerce was taken on a tour of the Station, then were entertained at a buffet supper in the Officers Mess.

Major-General H Plocher, former Vice Chief of the West German Air Force, accompanied by Colonel FC Schlichting, West German Air Attache, and S/L GA McInnes of AFHQ, arrived on a familiarization visit. They were taken on a guided tour of the Station and were entertained at a Mess party by W/C Baynton and his officers. The Major-General is soon to assume a senior NATO appointment.

We were honoured to entertain His Honour, the Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Quebec and Mme. Gagnon at Station Mont Apica. Guided tours were conducted around the station. Mme. Gagnon attended a tea where she met Mrs. Baynton and the wives of the officers. A formal Mess Dinner and evening dance offered a special climax to the day. The guests departed at midnight.

The AOC, A/V/M WR MacBrien, arrived at Mont Apica to carry out his annual Station inspection. He was entertained at lunch in the Officers Mess, then taken on a tour of the Station. The officers and their wives had the privilege to meet the AOC at an Informal Dining-In Nite also held in the Officers Mess.

Air Commodore JB Harvey paid a short visit to the Station arriving by GMT from Bagotville at noon hour. He was conducted on a tour of the Tower by the CO and COpsO and left by GMT approximately 1600 hours.

S/L DJ Dewan, Air/P, was SOS to USAF, ADC Section, New York City, NY, this date. At 1723 hours the fire alert was sounded at the Tower. On investigation it was found that 51456 AW1 CM Johnson had detected smoke and informed her Crew Commander, F/L Munro. The fire section was called. Upon the arrival of the personnel from the fire section it was determined that the smoke was caused by the overheating of a neon ceiling transformer. The all clear was sounded at 1845 hours.

The annual Mobile Equipment Roadeo took place this afternoon while a number of Service and civilian personnel looked on. The final winners were Cpl. MOH MacDonald and LAC JF Comtois in first and second place respectively.

The Airwomen’s Softball team lost out to Lac St. Denis in the semi-finals in overtime of the QRA Softball tournament at St. Hubert after downing Bagotville and St. Sylvestre teams.

At 0010 hours the fire alarm sounded. It was discovered that a minor fire had been caused as the result of overheating of the insulation on the engine exhaust pipe in the power plant located in the Tower. One civilian power plant operator received slight burns to his hands while attempting to extinguish the fire. The all clear sounded at 0105 hours.

G/C and Mrs. RE MacBride, NNRHQ/Div Air Plans, arrived by PMC at 1600 hours. At 1900 hours members of the Officers Mess and their wives assembled and were introduced to G/C and Mrs. MacBride. Cocktails were served and following a dinner by candlelight in the dining-room, the G/C and Mrs. MacBride were presented with the traditional green and white toques, emblematic of the Station, by W/C WL Baynton. Following the presentation, the ladies retired to the bar room where they were served with coffee and liqueurs. They were joined later by the male guest of honour and male members of the Mess. Dancing and a sing-along followed making an enjoyable evening for everyone.

Fortunately, a beautiful sunny day favoured Mont Apica for the Battle of Britain parade. Everyone was turned out in their dress blues for the first time this season. Following the inspection of the two flights, the Commanding Officer, W/C WL Baynton, had the pleasure of presenting the Quarterly Outstanding Airmen’s Award and suitably engraved pewter mug to LAW Wendy Rosser; the Canadian Forces Decoration to LAC R Brock; and Air Force crested Zippo lighters to Cpl. MOH MacDonald and LAC JF Comtois, winners of the ME Roadeo.

A wire sports meet was held in the afternoon on the sports field to determine the winners to compete in the inter-ADC Wire Track and Field meet. This was followed by a western style Station dance in the Recreation Centre in the evening. W/C WL Baynton made presentations to the winners.

A group of Senior Officers and their wives, headed by G/C Ashman, CO of Station Bagotville, were entertained in the Officers Mess.

A small fire was reported at 0720 hours in the FCO barracks. LAC GL Sharpe had fallen asleep while smoking and consequently his bedding and mattress were damaged. The fire was extinguished before any damage resulted in the barrack block or LAC Sharpe.

A badminton team consisting of four males and four females from the Station participated in the QRA Badminton tournament at Bagotville. Cpl. MA Greer was the only Mont Apica member who reached the finals only to lose out to the St. Jean’s member in the ladies singles.

A Remembrance Day parade followed by services was held this morning. F/L SR Guylar, SGTO, was presented with the CD medal by W/C Baynton. G/C Richer, CO of Station Bagotville was entertained in the Officers Mess by the Commanding Officer, CAdO, CTechO, and COpsO.

19 Nov 59

G/C ME Pollard, Division Commander, First NORAD Division, accompanied by F/L WF MacLean, Division Intelligence Officer, arrived by staff car at 1700 hours and were met by the CO and COpsO. At 1800 hours, G/C Pollard and F/L MacLean, accompanied by the CO, CTSO, COpsO, SGTO and V/PMC had dinner in the Mess. This was followed by a visit to the Sergeants Mess by G/C Pollard, F/L MacLean, the CO and the COpsO. A Cueball Exercise was held and the CO accompanied by G/C Pollard and F/L MacLean proceeded to the Tower to participate.

20 Nov 59

During the morning G/C Pollard viewed an STP exercise and attended a de-briefing. After lunch, a briefing in the Controller’s Lounge was attended by the CO, CTSO, COpsO, STelO, SStdsO, CStdsO, and SGTO. Current problems and future plans were discussed. At 1900 hours Mess members were assembled in the bar of the Officers Mess for cocktails prior to the Mess Dinner at 1930 hours. Guest of Honour was G/C Pollard who gave a speech on the participation of the Station in NORAD.

21 Nov 59

G/C Pollard and F/L MacLean departed by staff car for Lac St. Denis. A Variety Show, produced by LAC H Holden and LAC D Lye, was presented in the afternoon to the children and to the adults in the evening. The cast consisted of airmen and airwomen of this Station who had banded together to create a very enjoyable show. The evening show was followed by a dance in the Rec. Hall.
