1975 - CFS Moosonee - DND Directorate of History

CFS Moosonee, located 12 miles inland from the south west corner of James Bay, was constructed in 1960-61. The manning began in November 1961, and the station became operational in July 1962.

To accomplish their role of collecting and transmitting radar information to the Direction Centre at 22nd NORAD Region Headquarters North Bay, the station employs 139 military and 59 civilian personnel. The base facilities include 32 buildings (all types) and 114 portable type PMQs.

There are two small communities near CFS Moosonee giving the area a population of approximately 1,800 people.

DND generators provide approximately 12% of the communities' electric power, and heavy equipment provides snow removal for 1 « miles of roadway between the community and the station. Civilians from the surrounding area use DND swimming and recreational facilities.
