    COMMENTARY

Due to a nearly complete change in officer personnel, this quarter has seen a thorough appraisal of the base and its many functions. As personnel become more familiar with the base and its problems, many constructive changes and plans were initiated. As a result of these projects, fewer supply problems are being encountered, closer intra-section co-ordination is being reached, and a general "clean-up, fix-up" campaign is proceeding.

Operationally, the Squadron is striving to maintain the proficiency and efficiency so vividly illustrated by the results of "Project Wex-Val". To accomplish this, training missions such as "Big Blast" and Wise-Up" have been participated in by this Squadron. To further supplement this training, numerous cross-training trips were made available to the Aircraft Controllers.

During this period, several contracts have been completed. The serving lines in the Mess Hall were refinished with Quarry Tile floorings, and one walk-in cooler was modified to give us an additional walk-in type freezer. All barracks have been equipped with new venetian blinds and wainscoting has been installed. In the Motor Pool, the contract for installation of an exhaust system has been completed.

The Squadron has finally received a new station wagon. This 1959 Chevrolet was a much needed item and is being put to good use. Our Motor Pool has done an excellent job through winter months, keeping the Squadron vehicles in top operating condition.

No new C&E equipment has been installed during this quarter; but final acceptance certification on the prime search radar and indicators was accomplished. The Squadron is looking forward to a vigorous C&E facility construction program in the coming months.

With the coming of Spring and disappearance of snow, the Base Salvage Officer is back in business. Due to inadequate sheltered storage facilities, all items had to be placed outside, and were quickly covered with ice and snow. With the vigorous program now in progress, it is expected that most items will be disposed of shortly.

The Squadron has been very active in the Division athletic program. The basketball team representing this organization swept through the regional tournament with ease, only to be edged in the Division play-off. It is with pride that we point to our third place trophy. We are conducting intra-section volleyball games to select a team to represent us in the forthcoming Division tournament.

The 4602nd Support Group conducted a staff visit to this installation and made many worth suggestions. The overall appraisal of the unit was satisfactory.

During March, the first issue of the bi-monthly base newspaper, "The Pinetree-Lines", was published. This paper was warmly received by higher headquarters as well as base personnel.

Community relations still remain at a high level and periodic social gatherings were held in the Officer’s Lounge for key civilians in the community.
