1997 - General History - The NBC Group

Station Parent (site C-7, callsign Scooter) was located on a CNR line in northern Quebec, 120 miles north of Montreal. The surveying for RCAF Station Parent began in October 1950. The decision on where to locate the site was based on the location of the forest ranger's fire lookout tower which was perched atop the highest point of land in the vicinity. Construction began on 6 March 1951 and in February 1953, RCAF Detachment Parent was formed. Three months later in May 1953, 14 AC&W Squadron was organized and personnel transferred in from Air Material Command (ATC) Control. In July 1953, 14 AC&W Squadron performed its first operational role when it served as an early warning unit during an ADC operation. The squadron began 24 hour operations on 4 January 1954 with a limited early warning status. The station carried on with its role as an early warning unit until it was SAGE-capable in October 1963. With greatly improved detection and tracking capabilities, the need for as many radar stations diminished. Consequently Parent was determined to be redundant and ceased operations in March 1964 as a result of the realignment of NORAD assets.
