CE Carried out routine and preventative maintenance. Due to the lack of funds resulting from the Austerity Program no new projects were carried out.

7 Dec 62

The AFT088 for the AN/FPS-26 was signed, which in effect transferred the responsibility for this equipment from the contractor (RCA) to the RCAF. Two very successful advanced training courses were held on this equipment for Senior NCO technicians 7 Jan to 8 Feb and 11 Feb to 15 Mar 63. SAGE peaking was completed during the week of 25 Mar, but because of equipment faults and the resulting delay in obtaining spare parts, SAGE testing did not start on this equipment until late in May.

Station Ramore assumed parent unit responsibility for 288 RCAC Squadron Kirkland Lake. Promotion to F/L of F/O WH Eckley AS/FtrC effective 26 October 62 and F/O SM Porter Pers/Adm, PAdO, effective 1 Jan 63, were announced.

3 Jan 63

The CO of Station Ramore presented Air Cadet Wings to RMC Cadet Richard Mondoux of the Kirkland Lake Collegiate and Vocational Institute and inspected the Squadron.

7 Jan 63

The first AN/FPS-26A five week Practical Training Course began with 16 students. The Western Electric Company (WECO) Team arrived on this unit and SAGE testing started 14 Jan although not scheduled to start officially until 27 Feb.

21 Jan 63

A WECO representative arrived to conduct the Radar Peaking for SAGE testing.

22 Jan 63

Some reorganization of branch head responsibilities was made to improve control of Telecommunications. A four-pronged organization was created by the addition of Chief Logistics Officer (CLogO). The CTSO position was changed to Chief Telecommunications Officer (CTeloO). CLogO is responsible for Supply, CE and MSE. CTelO is responsible for Radar and Communications. The branch heads now consist of PAdO, COpsO, CLogO, and CTelO. F/L RT Macfarlane SSupO was appointed CLogoO and F/L IA Small former CTSO, became CTelO.

12 and 13 Feb 63

S/L BD Murchie, RCAF ZED CONTROL AFHQ/D ARMENG visited the unit to brief the CO, COpsO, and the StandO on the ZED Program.

12 Mar 63

Bishop Robinson of the Anglican Diocese of Moosonee confirmed three children of service personnel in the Station Chapel. A reception was held later in the Officer’s Mess.

25 to 29 Mar 63

A Tactical Evaluation Team composed of W/C SC Tugwell, S/L ET Albert, S/L LW Beasleigh, F/L JH Ferguson, F/L J Kline, and F/L J Young evaluated the Operations section.

27 Mar 63

Command TAC EVAL TEAM evaluated the Operations section. The minimum pass was 80%. Results: Station Operations had the unique distinction of being one of the few to pass an EVAL on the first attempt.

1 Apr 63

Sgt. RA Prior Radar Tech G (CW) 3A was promoted to the rank of Flying Officer with a PC. Airmen’s promotions gave Station Ramore three new Sergeants and ten new Corporals:

Manning of the GATR Site on a 24 hour basis was instituted; SAGE Peaking was completed 7 Mar 63.

22 to 24 Apr 63

ADC Supply Inspection Team of F/L Blythman and Sgt. Allard visited this unit.

May 63

SAGE Testing of GATR facilities was started in early May.

8 May 63

F/O RJJ Therien reported to this unit to take over the duties of the SCEO replacing F/O SP Kolomyjec departing on release.

22 May 63

An advance party of Canadian Westinghouse Personnel arrived on the unit to make preparations for the installation of AN/FPS-27 Search Radar. The official date for the start of this installation is 1 Jun 63.

23 May 63

The CO inspected 288 RCAC Squadron Kirkland Lake on the Annual Inspection. F/L DG Phinney, PULO, accompanied the CO.
