    COMMENTARY

    Administration and Personnel:

    Key personnel for this period has not changed. The major problem for this period was a change to the Unit Manning Document. The Air Police Section has been cut in half with an expected result of insufficient security. Before correspondence could be initiated requesting the lost spaces be re-authorized, we were informed that no UMD Change Requests would be permitted, due to the fluctuation in the SAGE manning. Due to an overseas site, with a definite tour, ten (10) officers arrived at this station during the period 1 January through 30 June 1958, while five (5) officers departed. Sixty-seven (67) airmen arrived this period while seventy-one (71) departed.

    Operations:

    On 11 April 1958, a conference was held at 37th Air Division (Defense), concerning WEX/VAL missions in which this squadron will participate. Due to WEX/VAL commitments, three (3) additional PPI scopes, with cables, were obtained for this unit, together with additional equipment for other sections. Also during April, the Operations Room was modified from a two (2) level, split type dias, to conform to the ADC standard for GCI sites. During the period 15 April through 9 May 1958, while we were being modified, we assumed an early warning function only, with no air/ground communications. On 13 June 1958, 3 Sector ADCC notified this station by Message AC 874 (Attachment #1), that the 912th Squadron would assume identification responsibility on a trial basis. It is expected that after one (1) month the identification function will become permanent.

    Communications and Electronics:

    During the period of the modification to the Operations Room, all communications wires and boxes were removed or replaced. This work included building of a new monitor console, and relocating the Operation’s communication console. Also during this period, the radar maintenance section completely recabled all scopes in the Operations Room. Cable diagrams were made to show routing of all radar cables. The phase one (1) overhaul of the AN/FPS-3C and AN/FPS-502 was accomplished during the period 6 May through 23 May 1958, by the Canadian Aviation Electronics overhaul team. All three radomes were painted during June 1958.
