Saglek, Labrador

1997 - North Warning System - Larry Wilson

The original Pinetree Line radar station at Saglek was closed on 31 July, 1971. The Pinetree Line complex was eventually demolished and the existing North Warning System (NWS) radar site was constructed on the exact location that was used for the original Pinetree Line radar station. This NWS complex is a Long Range Radar (LRR) installation and it was established in November, 1988. The site is unmanned and it is supported by a nearby Logistic Support Site (LSS). The complex is known as Saglek, Labrador and the site number of this NWS complex is LAB-2. Saglek one of 11 existing LRR locations which forms the NWS. The LRR complex at Saglek makes use of the General Electric AN/FPS-117 radar equipment which is a multi-elevational and multi-target phased-array type radar.

The NWS military complex at Saglek is a restricted military site and permission must be obtained from the Director General Aerospace Engineering Program Management (Radar and Communications Systems) - also known as DGAEPM (R&CS) before going there. Saglek has a long paved runway adequate to handle a C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. The road to the summit is not maintained except during resupply and maintenance during the summer. Normal service is by helicopter from Goose Bay.
