    COMMENTARY

    During the latter part of June, 1970, official notification was received from ADC Headquarters, Ent AFB, Colorado, stating that the 924th AC&W Squadron would soon be deactivated. On 30 June, at 0001GMT, the radar equipment at Saglek Air Station was shut down.

    Following this action the major components associated with the radar installation were either removed and forwarded through the required disposition channels or left in place. All government equipment and disposition orders are being correlated by the site supply personnel.

    Soon after the shutdown of the radar equipment, many of the support sections began closing. These included Radar Maintenance, Radio Maintenance, other CEM sections, Operations and the Information Branch/AFRTS Studios,

    During this period the following administrative actions took place:

    Promotions – A/1C Charles Moss promoted to Sgt. (1 August 1970) and A/1C Larry Woods promoted to Sgt. (1 August 1970).

    Decorations – S/Sgt. David Allen awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal. Mr. John Crawley, Mr. George Hiscock and Mr. John Daley awarded the Civilian Medal of Valor.

    As to personnel losses, beginning with the deactivation period on 1 July 1970, the personnel stationed at Saglek AS began to receive new assignments. These were received through the normal assignment system through Goose AB, Labrador.

    On 1 August 1970, ADC Headquarters redesignated the 924th AC&W Squadron as OL AE, 4624th Support Squadron (SAGE).

    On 30 September 1970, the last of the military personnel will depart this installation.

    This will be the last Historical Record submitted from Saglek Air Station, Saglek Bay, Labrador.
