1966 - Radome Trivia - Ed Vasecka

The original radomes for American radar stations in the north were built by a firm called Lincoln Laboratory (LL). These were round and made of rubber. There were only two of these proto-types to be constructed and these were fondly referred to as LL1 and LL2. LL1 was sent to the 931st AC&W in Thule Greenland, while LL2 was sent to the 924th AC&W in Saglek. All of the other American radar stations were ultimately provided with the GPA50 radome which was a rigid construction along the type of the fiberglass eggshell variety. Of additional interest is that the LL1 radome from Thule was ultimately shipped to Saglek when Thule was phased out. There was a large basement area in the operations building at Saglek, and the old LL1 radome was stored in this location.
