0050 – Unit advised that the crew of a KC-97 (Dump 40) had bailed out in Watertown NY area leaving aircraft in auto pilot with 12- 16 hours fuel remaining. Reason for bail out was fire warning. We are to be on the alert for tracks exhibiting unusual behaviour. 0152 – Scabbard advises that they are carrying track believed to be Dump 40, 50 miles NW of Bagotville. Boneyard 16 (CF-100) was scrambled but was unable to obtain tail numbers. 0335 – Pitchfork advised to place one aircraft on cockpit readiness pending a reappearance of Dump 40. 0610 – Pitchfork off cockpit readiness. Dump 40 believed to have crashed in Labrador.

2150 – "Unknown" detected 100 miles NE of Senneterre 30,000 feet heading south at 430 knots. Believed to be Pan American Flight 59. 2153 – Scrambled one aircraft from VO. 2202 – Scrambled aircraft unserviceable on runway. Second aircraft (JH23) scrambled from VO. 2223 – JH23 handed over to Eskimo for identification of Unknown. 2235 – JH23 unable to catch unknown – returning to North Bay. 2235 – Unknown identified friendly by Syracuse Sector.

0215Z – VO fighters released from standby commitment for suspected fuel contamination.

0320Z – Seasons Greetings received from AVM Harvey and G/C Hockney.

Quiet generally – with bad weather eliminating much of the scheduled flying. Total intercepts – 197. F/L MacKay off to Staff School at Toronto.

2325Z – Fire alarm turned in by Message Centre. Smoke coming from air conditioning vent. 2350Z – Burnt ballast in fluorescent fixture causing smoke. Panic over.

0220Z – Squawk 4 in QD 32 reported by Battleaxe. 0230Z – Squawk 4 identified as T-33 flying test SOS. 0244Z – Sugarcane advised "Good Show". Test SOS identified and sorted out within 6 minutes of initiation of pattern.

0448Z – Sugarcane off the air – Puritan on "Alsec". 0500Z – Sugarcane back on air.

1130Z – VO runway closed – sweeper out of gas on runway. 1135Z – Sweeper refuelled – VO runway serviceable.

A very quiet month – little flying, poor weather and only 252 intercepts. The technical side of the operation quite busy though checking out new SAGE equipment and peaking up the old equipment.

1513Z – Unit on Alert for Shock Wave 8 – NORAD exercise.

1726Z – Fade out Shock Wave 8 – 8 attempts, 7 MA’s.

2040Z – Unit on Alert for exercise Mute IV.

13 May 63

42629 Sgt. CB Shindell attended a Technician Admin CE course from 13 May 63 to 24 May 63 at SSS Camp Borden, Ontario.

The Val d’Or runway was declared unserviceable in early January due to frost heaves. The CEU runway study to determine why began 27 May 63. Results not yet known.

Dec 62 – Jan 63

The winter operations at Val d’Or during this period caused the overtime and backlog situation to worsen.

Sgt. McLean arrived on TD from Station St. Hubert and was given the task of identification and documentation of the GATR test equipment. The following 2 months saw this job almost completed when Sgt. McLean’s TD tour expired and he returned to St. Hubert. Because of his help we were able to reduce the backlog somewhat, and the arrival of AC Bergeron and his employment in sub-stores alleviated the immediate problems there.

Feb 4 the ADC Supply inspection team arrived for a three day visit. They took with them a better understanding of Val d’Or operations, and their report when received, was favourable.

Much time was spent on the preparation of change of establishment submission for the Supply staff Senneterre – Val d’Or and this was completed and submitted to ADCHQ on 15 Mar 63. To date no formal advice has been received concerning its acceptance, however personal contact with SOSup would indicate the submission was favourably received and an overall increase of 5 to 6 positions might be expected.

The end of the fiscal year was handled without undue difficulty and the use of the TX 2 building as a flammable stores enabled us to clear away many of the outstanding local contracts prior to the 1 Apr deadline.

1 Apr saw the inception of the Central Voucher register which replaces the multi-register system of voucher control. This new system required considerable re-adjustment in internal voucher handling procedures.

Mid April announced the transfer of F/S Taschereau and Sgt. Dumont effective 12 and 3 Jul. Replacements have been selected, F/S Turbull from 1 SD and Sgt. Dagenais from Station North Bay.

The hand-over meeting for the GATR site (AFTO 88) took place in early May and the accounting for the GATR is now almost completed.

LAW Rubisch was advised of tentative selection for a transfer overseas and is expected to leave in early Aug. To date a replacement has not been named.

In conclusion, with unknown flying operations facing us and a major personnel shake-up taking place during Jul and Aug, all indications are for a hectic summer.

The Christmas Day Drive was completed in the month of December. A stake truck full of repaired toys was turned over to the "Knights of Columbus" in Senneterre for distribution to the needy families in the district.

Word was received in January that Station Senneterre received "Honorable Mention" for their entry in this contest.

Cpl. Savard MP transferred to Station Yorkton and departed this unit 11 Feb 63. To date, no word of a replacement has been received.

Because of transfers and postings of personnel the Volunteer Fire Brigade necessitated reorganization. The Brigade was reorganized in May 63 with twenty volunteers from other sections. The Brigade trains every Friday afternoon under the direction of the Fire Chief.

Two fires were reported during this period on STATS 359 ser. 63/1 dated 17 Jan 63 and ser. 63/2 dated 18 Jan 63. Both fires involved upholstered furniture in the Airmen’s Canteen of the Combined Mess Building.

Dec 62

Relocation of the RHI consoles and their adaptation to the SAGE environment was carried out by contractor maintenance personnel from Burroughs Dec 12-21.

Equipment sub-systems tests by WECO personnel were conducted during the period 17 Jan – 6 Feb.

Radar FST-2 verification checks with the FSQ-7 computer are in progress. Returns indicate that acceptable results are being obtained.

Bore hole sighting of the NAFPS-507 antenna.

ADC MRP completed bore hole sighting of the ANFPS-507A antenna 13 – 15 Feb.

Mr. D Martin of CGE conducted a one day course on the care and operation of the 7182 magnetron.

Overhaul of the 15-J-1D trainers by a Northern Electric MRP took place during the period 25 Feb – 8 Mar.

Training – Due to the marked reduction of supervisory personnel, and the increased workload brought about by SAGE system testing, no training other than OJT was attempted. The following personnel attended courses in the USA: UPX-14, Cpl. Faust; AN/FPS-27, LAC’s Lewis and Durfey.

Command Staff visit by F/L Sephton occurred 22 Apr.

During the winter months December to April, this unit has been quite active in Station activities. The personnel have been more concerned with indoor than outdoor recreation.

Men’s League 5 teams approximately 30 participants

Lady’s League 4 teams approximately 24 participants

Mixed League 8 teams approximately 40 participants

Besides their own leagues the Station was represented in the RCAF Wire 5 pin bowling airwomen, RCAF Wire 5 pin bowling Men’s and Women’s, RCAF dependent youth 5 pin bowling.

Canadian Legion Invitation Tournament – Senneterre school children have had use of the alleys during the Saturday mornings and casual bowling.

Badminton was played in two phases, club and casual. The badminton club played twice a week with an average turn out of 6 players each night. Casual badminton showed little interest.

The badminton club had 42 paid membership which included the civilians from the district. An invitation badminton tournament was held 2 Mar 63 with three clubs, Amos, Val d’Or and RCAF Senneterre and 61 participants.

Exhibition games were played with Amos, Amos Boys College. The Station won 4 out of the 6 games. The annual golden ball tournament was held between RCAF Parent, RCAF Senneterre and a representative team from Amos on the 10 - 11 May 63. The first game, Senneterre 43, Station Parent 50; the second game Senneterre 62, Amos 51. Station Senneterre won the golden ball trophy from station Parent.

Men’s League – 4 teams approximately 30 participants. This league was dissolved due to the curling activities in the middle of the league.

Casual tennis with 4 every night starting the 1^st May 63. A tennis club is planned for this year.

Fitness Classes – Grade 8 and 9 boys and girls once a week for 13 weeks. 11 boys and 6 girls.

5BX Classes – Classes for Air Force Personnel – 6 participants for eight weeks.

The dependents attend lessons on the trampoline by RCAF specialists. Casual participation per week is 25 adults and children.

A water carnival was held for the dependents on 2 Feb 63, in the Station swimming pool. Racing events for all ages with 25 dependents participating.

At 1930 hours, 2 Feb 63 the inter mess water carnival was held. Novelty events such as log rolling, relays, races and canoe jousting with approximately 56 personnel participating. The Senior NCO’s mess won the competition. A beauty contest was held and Mrs. Cairns was crowned Queen.

The compulsory swim classes were started in Dec 62. All personnel were given a pre-test and those who did not meet the standards of the test were put in classes. The classes were held for one week with the following results: Juvenile RC 6 and Juvenile RC 18.

The ski tow was in operation from Jan to Mar. Due to excessive poor weather it was not as popular as it could be. The outdoor skating rink was erected for the first time and proved quite successful especially after the lights were added. It is suggested that the tennis court not be used as a kiddies rink along with the boarded rink.

Organized by the Recreation Council with the inter mess competition won by the Airmen’s Mess with the Sgts. a close second.

Individual competitions for dependents children and snow sculpturing also included.

The curling club had 94 paid members of which 32 were civilians from Senneterre. The club had 21 mixed rinks.

Club trophy won by LAW Ulrich rink. The club sponsored 5 invitation bonspiels and were represented in 10, one of which was the Zone 4 RCAF finals. The Pearson Trophy was retained by this unit from the RCE (R) Noranda. Considering the rink curled on natural ice an excellent season was held.

The station entered a team in the local town league played ten games won 8 tied 1 and lost 1. Also the airwomen challenged games vs. airmen and the women from Senneterre.

Fireman’s Ball – Held in the Recreation Centre 13 Oct 62. This dance was sponsored by the Fire Department and proceeds to the Station Fund.

New Year’s Eve Dance – Held 31 Dec in the Recreation Centre. Attendance from airmen and Cpls. 118 with guests from town of Senneterre.

Water Carnival Dance – A water carnival dance was held in the Recreation Centre on the 2 Feb 63.

Scout Group – The Scout and Cub group meet once a week in the Recreation Centre. 1^st Senneterre Cub Pack have 18 members.

The scout groups from Val d’Or visit this unit periodically for swimming tests.

Fund Raising Projects – Bingos

The Town Council holds bingos twice a month. A small profit was shown from each bingo.

Feb 63

S/L Thompson made her last visit to this infirmary before retiring as ADC Command Matron, and in April we had our first visit from her successor, S/L Fitzgerald.

Cpl. Borgia received his promotion to Sgt.

Work Load – During this 6 month period has been comprised mainly of:

1 – Daily MIR for service personnel and dependents.

2 – Once monthly well baby clinics.

3 – Twice weekly Pre & Post natal clinics.

4 – Influenza serum etc. Immunization parades.

5 – Norman In Patient care, which has fluctuated from the highest number at one time of 7, to the more usual 2.

May has once more started the black fly season, and Sgt. Borgia is getting the pest control program underway again.

Food Services

Approximately 132 living-in personnel were served three meals daily in all the three dining rooms.

Approximately 37 meals were served on a cash basis at .50 and .75 per meal.

Food was served at the Operations Building during operations for approximately 62 living-in and out, approximately twice monthly These meals were received with individual signatures on for "Appendix "A" State of Readiness".

Night meals were served in the Operations Building for the above mentioned period. Approximately 31 meals were served between 2300 to 0100 hours daily. NOTE: The Combined Mess was closed for the only reason of shortage of personnel.

Mess dinners were held at the Officers Mess monthly. The Sr. NCO’s had one mess dinner during the season.

Parties were held at irregular times in all messes and institutes. Beer call (Friday night) were also held in all messes. Food was served at all messes with the same menu for airmen as officers.

The Christmas and New Year’s dinner was served in the Airmen’s dining room for approximately 62 airmen and airwomen. The CO had ordered officers and Sr. NCO’s to be waiters for the day, while airmen and airwomen sat down and were served food.

Combined Mess meetings were held at irregular times during this period.

There was no major complaints on food, quantity and quality.

Personnel

There is an acute shortage of supervisory personnel at the Combined Mess. Consequently a Cpl FSA is most of the time i/c cooks and an LAC is an acting Cpl.

There are three civilian FSA’s short from the establishment. The work load is divided among other FSA’s.

One Sr. NCO was honorably discharged from the RCAF during the month of January 63. There is no replacement for this discharged Sgt.

Note: The above mentioned clerk is employed as a storeman. Unfortunately this clerk (Mr. D Beauvais) is qualified as a clerk (1) grade but it can not be said here that he is efficient in his trade, action was taken in remustering him as FSA. Request was denied.

Training on the job was constantly a fact in bettering civilian employees and a service cook; LAC Hamilton was given lectures for a period of two months in order to be prepared to write (3) G Cook exam.

One civilian cook gave his notice and resigned his position during that period.

The FS i/c of SFvS is posted to Europe. His replacement will report for duty on the 15 Jun 63.

All civilians and service personnel were given annual leave as entitled.

All rations are being sent from RCASC DID Montreal. A local transport Company was given a standing contract for the period.

75% of M&I cash money was spent in buying food stuff from RCASC DID Montreal with the CATC 2206 forms. The remaining 25% is spent on the local markets. It was found that in spending extra messing money with RCASC this unit gained a lot in quality, quantity and economy in the buying of food.

Cpl. Shred, an officer i/c of issues at RCASC visited this unit at the end of the fiscal year.

There was no expenditure or exchanges in heavy equipment during this period.

The morale concerning civilian employees in this section seems to be high. It was found that they are co-operative serving with service personnel and that the liaison between civilian employees and personnel eating in all dining rooms is appreciated by the supervisory service personnel in this section.

Accounts personnel were quite busy preparing new pay sheets for the coming year.

A party was held to say farewell to Mrs. Kay Savard, our typist and 29841 Cpl. JJ Bernier who were both departing for Yorkton, Saskatchewan. An investigation is underway concerning matters in the M&I Section. 29841 Cpl. JJ Bernier is being held under close custody pending results of the above matter. His transfer to Yorkton has been cancelled.

A loss was discovered in the Cpl’s Club during the progress of the above investigation resulting in 53474 LAC JA Gagnon being detained under close custody. 37735 Cpl. WC Elder received a letter of thanks from the Chief of the Air Staff along with an award for a suggestion concerning a revised instruction to CAP 16 Vol. 1 Supply Instructions which was adopted 25 Oct 62. 211581 LAC JG Guay received notice of his transfer overseas to Marville, France.

Our contain Trainee 93942W SM McDougall left for Camp Borden 24 Mar to attend the Accounts Course. 203939 Cpl LW Lipsett and 37735 Cpl. WC Elder are taking the ADC Management Course.

Promotion day rolled around with no promotions in the Accounts section.

236500 LAC EM Davies departed for North Bay effective 13 May. 72916 LAC JL Lavallee arrived on transfer from North Bay 14 May. Another transfer into our section was 32256 Cpl. RE Creary from Sydney NS 23 May. He has been placed in charge of Supply Accounts. Several charges have been laid against 29841 Cpl. JJ Bernier and 53475 LAC JA Gagnon. A court martial was held to try Cpl Bernier and he was given 6 months imprisonment and reduced to the ranks. A court martial is being held in June to try LAC Gagnon.

Christmas was observed in the traditional manner, with the Officers and Sr. NCO’s serving Christmas dinner to the airmen and the Alert Crew.

Personnel of 400 (Auxiliary) Squadron, Toronto, carried out a winter training operation at Val d’Or.

CF-101B Operations ceased because of severe frost heaves in the runway.

CEU Survey Team began Comprehensive Survey of Runway damage.
