Air Force Day was observed at Val d’Or Detachment. Apart from celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the Air Force and the 50th Anniversary of powered flight, Station Senneterre honoured the Bush Pilots of this vicinity as well as the biggest ground and air display ever held in this area; the Golden Hawks being the main display. Some 13,000 people from the surrounding districts attended.

Cpl. AE Hooper FtrCop saved the life of Mr. Andre Perrier, a civilian construction worker, who was completely buried when a cave-in occurred while a deep trench was being dug for the laying of water and sewer pipes to service the new chapel which was under construction at the time of the accident. A power change-over operation was carried out and during this period the 50 foot inflated radome was removed and the roof sealed over.

The following work was completed during this period:

Sidewalks around PMQs and Protestant and RC Schools – approximately 4,000 feet.

Replacement of window frames in RC school.

Interior painting of 27 PMQs.

Exterior painting of 3 PMQs – 7 other PMQs started.

Bowling alleys were re-sanded and furnished.

Fire breaks sprayed with growth killer.

Covered the cement stairway at entrance to swimming pool equipment room.

Services to trailer park – water, sewage and electrical, were extended to accommodate three to four more trailers.

The Combined Mess office space was enlarged. Cleaner room was added. Stainless steel tables were widened to accommodate washing trays and pre-rinse sink was added to assist clean-up.

Condensate receiver tank was installed in Central Heating Plant.

Radomes removed from three towers – roofs sealed.

New distribution switchboard installed in Operations Building under RIP.

Air Conditioning plant installed in left tower. Modification of air conditioning plant in Operations Building.

Concrete aprons laid at Fuel Oil Tanks and Diesel Workshop.

Catch basins and drain tiles installed.

Landscaping – Large area at rear of PMQs added. School ground area and slope to tennis court sodded. Area around old chapel and rear of PMQs 28 to 35 was seeded.

Operational commitments of the AC&W Radar recording camera system resulted in 17 rolls of 35 mm by 100 feet film being used.

There were 80 K5 (Photo Work Orders) in this period. Reprints and new requirements used 205 sheets of 4 x 5 film, 412 sheets of 8 x 10 printing paper and 82 flash bulbs.
