F/O WR Cann AS/FtrC transferred from Station Falconbridge to this Unit. S/L HJ Tennant COpsO and F/O JCD Dumond proceeded on TD to attend3rd NORAD Division Quarterly STP Feedback and Problem Design Meeting. S/L McNeely and WO2 Williams ADCHQ completed the annual Supply Inspection.

The Officer’s Mess entertained the Rotary Club of Val d’Or-Bourlamaque.

4 Dec 59

Beechcraft – emergency landing 60 miles north of Senneterre on the Bell River – passengers, one of which was Mrs. Miquelon, were on their way to Chaplais, Quebec, to attend a celebration in honor of the Honorable Jacques Miquelon, Minister of Lands and Forests for the province of Quebec. Search and Rescue were dispatched, with the result of the aircraft being spotted the following morning and the crew and passengers rescued.

The Ladies Auxiliary held a Station Cocktail Dance in the Recreation Hall. This function was held to raise money for the Korean Orphan fund.

F/O WG Bland Air/Obs proceeded on TD to attend Controller Course at Tyndall AFB Florida prior to being transferred to Senneterre from 416 Squadron St. Hubert. F/O EN Krahn Air/P proceeded on TD to attend Controller Course at Tyndall. Sked Flight 101 and 102 commenced for this Unit, arriving at the Senneterre airstrip – later changed to Val d’Or airport.

Admin Section Christmas party was held.

The installation, by Northern Electric Installation Team, of the GPA27A/FPS-20A, in room 119 of the Operations Building, was completed.

20 Dec 59

A Christmas party was held for 400 children of RCAF and Civilian DND Employees which was sponsored by the PMQ Council. Christmas treats were also sent to the Indian population in the north.

22 Dec 59

Half of Admin Staff on Christmas leave. A new 400 gallon condensation receiver tank was installed in the Central Heating Plant.

A physical remodelling of the Supply Section was undertaken, with re-positioning of offices for stock control, warehousing, NCO i/c Stock Control and SSupO.

The conversion of the antenna in the main radome from an AN/FPS-20A configuration was started on the 6 Jan and completed on the 11 Jan.

8 Jan 60

A curling rink, consisting of Cpl. Forman – Skip, Cpl. Dickinson – Vice, Cpl. Glasish – Second, and FS Frass – Lead, won the North-West Quebec bonspiel held at Bevcon Curling Rink. A second RCAF rink placed fourth in this major Quebec Bonspiel.

Cpl. Forman’s rink took first place in a curling bonspiel held at Bevcon Mines, winning $100.00 suits for each member of that rink.

S/L WF Cooke and F/L HL Thirlwall AFHQ Field Liaison Staff on CE Squadrons visited the Station for two days. Flight trials of the AN/FPS-20A, using a T-33 aircraft as a target, were conducted on the 14, 15 and 16 Jan 60. These trials were within specifications and formal acceptance of the double channelled Search Radar by the unit. F/L Tracey ADCHQ Welfare Officer arrived at this Unit for a visit. Mr. MRG Bennett and F/L FC Woodruff Tech/Tel ADCHQ arrived for inspection of ADCOM 2 Installation. Mr. C Connolly, North West Telephone Company arrived for duties in the Telephone Section.

Station Senneterre played host to a Ladies Curling Jitney. Rinks from Malartic, Goldfields, Sigma, Bevcon, East Malartic and Val d’Or completed.

18 Jan 60

A formal unit course was conducted for 23 technicians on the AN/FPS-20A.

24 Jan 60

A break in the four-inch water line from the reservoir to the Operations Building occurred and was repaired the following day.

29 Jan 60

Sgt. JJJ Sloan and LAC S Marshall, AFP’s, helped direct traffic for a civilian funeral in Senneterre. Mess Dinner held in Officer’s Mess.

30 Jan 60

USAF Ramore arrived for a basketball double-header against Station Senneterre and departed victorious in both games.

31 Jan 60

Captain TW Lesage arrived on TD at this Unit for Dental Services for period 31 Jan to 27 Feb 60 from RCAF Station St. Johns. A topic for discussion on the Station at this time was the discovery of a large gold vein at Lamaque Gold Mines, which is located in Bourlamaque, Quebec.

Flight Lieutenant’s Qualifying examinations were held from the 1st to the 5th Feb inclusive. A familiarization and theory course was held on the AN/GPA-501 (SIF) for 23 technicians. The Snack Bar changed management – LAC and Mrs. A Fuller vice Cpl. G Hatfield. Challenge received from Station Parent re winter sports. Challenge accepted.

2 Feb 60

W/C McLeod, CO Station Parent, on Liaison Visit this unit. FS LB Mosher and LAC McAdam FtrCops were the first to be selected for SAGE Training Course.

3 Feb 60

The Communications Workshop was moved from the third floor of the Left Tower, Room 302 to Room 409 on the fourth floor of the Main Building. COMO and ComWO’s offices were moved from the main floor to Room 407 on the fourth floor of the Main Building.

4 Feb 60

Northern Electric Overhaul Party arrived for inspection and repair of UHF and Test Equipment. Hobby Shop being set up. Station Hockey Team involved in another shuffle in Senneterre. Four airmen (subpoenaed) proceeded to Val d’Or to appear as witnesses against a "native son" who ran down the barrier. Judge ill – trial postponed to 5 Feb. W/C Underhill, Commanding Officer, and Sgt. JJJ Sloan, NCO i/c AFP, attended "intimate" supper in the Town of Senneterre, with the "town fathers".

5 Feb 60

Cpl. Litchfield, Cpl. Bernier, LAC Marshall and Cpl. Vallee returned to court in Val d’Or again. Defendant’s license suspended 6 months, plus $100.00 fine.

7 Feb 60

RCAF Station Parent challenged Senneterre in all winter sports. Some 90 personnel from Parent competed at Senneterre with Senneterre winning all competitions. Results:

AC1 RJ Gordon, on leave from Trenton, was admitted to Val d’Or Hospital for injuries suffered when he attempted to unhorse a switch engine in Senneterre.

11 Feb 60

Very mild weather, with rain, becoming colder in the evening. Service transports restricted from travel to Val d’Or as the roads were covered with ice.

12 Feb 60

Valentines Dance held in the Recreation Centre – very successful. Mr. McGuire from Amos Garage demonstrated a "Ski-Doo" powered toboggan to the Search and Rescue Team. More sports activities away from home – curling bonspiel at Sigma; basketball tournament at Noranda.

14 Feb 60

W/C Underhill, CO, officially opened the Medical Centre in the town of Senneterre.

15 Feb 60

P/O RL Greer, Air/P, proceeded on TD to Tyndall AFB Florida for Controller Course. F/L RK Harvey, Air/P, proceeded on TD to Station Cold Lake, to attend CPU Course 59. Dr. JA Patton, SDC Representative, visited Senneterre for three days with regard to Operations.

G/C WW Laughland SOMS ADCHQ arrived for Staff Visit.

17 Feb 60

Party was held in the Officer’s Mess with Dr. Patton as guest of honor.

19 Feb 60

Parade was held at 1400 hours in commemoration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s giving birth to a new prince.

22 Feb 60

F/L SM Deane and S/L HJ Tennant proceeded on TD to Station Edgar for a period of four days to attend ECCM Course. Mr. Morgan and Mr. Bennett AMCHQ visited the Unit re ADCOM 2. LAC Golden on charge before CO for reporting to work under the influence on the 19 Feb. Defence was that he had been drinking a toast to the new prince.

Sked Flight cancelled due to weather conditions. Transfers coming in to set Val d’Or Detachment in operation for 1 Apr 60.

An Inter-Mess competition was held between the Airmen and the Corporals in the Airmen’s Canteen. Very successful.

S/L GF Sansoucy Tech/Tel ADCHQ arrived for period 29 Feb to 5 Mar for purpose of Staff Visit and Inspection of ADCOM 2 progress. S/L JA King, S/L EG Baxter, F/L WH Wortley, F/L AL De La Haye and F/L JE Beland arrived from Station Edgar for purpose of Staff Visit and Coordinate Division Policies.

F/O WA Sage returned from Site PIN for leave purposes. Weather was bright and clear – March came in like a lamb. W/C CC Underhill, CO, held a Conference to discuss activities at Val d’Or Detachment.

2 Mar 60

W/C CC Underhill, CO, and F/L HF Hull, SCEO, departed for Val d’Or Detachment to see what needed to be done prior to the Squadrons coming in on the 1st Apr 60. W/C Allison and two F/L’s visited overnight to discuss Val d’Or Detachment project.

3 Mar 60

W/C CC Underhill, CO, and S/L AR Abercrombie, CTSO, spent the day in Val d’Or at a Conference with G/C Mussels, CO, Station Uplands. S/L HJ Tennant, COpsO, address the Val d’Or – Bourlamaque Rotary Club at Val d’Or for the Commanding Officer.

Sgt. G Mallette, Clk/Acc was presented with a CD by the Commanding Officer. Hard-Times Dance was held in the Recreation Centre – moderate success.

F/L JM Sutherland’s rink emerged the winners in a curling bonspiel for the Dow Trophy.

7 Mar 60

Sgt. Moon from Camp Borden arrived this Unit to lecture on insurance. He address the Officers Mess at 1900 hours.

8 Mar 60

Sgt. Moon gave a lecture to the Sergeants Mess.

9 Mar 60

Meeting held in CO’s Office to discuss progress re Val d’Or Detachment. Sgt. Moon delivered lecture on insurance to the Corporals and Airmen in the Station Theatre. At the request of ADCHQ, the normal overhaul, usually carried out by a contractor mobile repair party, was replaced by an Extended Peaking, carried out by Unit personnel. Radar maintenance procedures normally carried out during an annual overhaul were redistributed too, and carried out in conjunction with the normal daily and weekly maintenance procedures.

F/O JCD Dumond posted to 3 AW OUT Cold Lake for inclusion on Course 90, and upon successful completion of course, was transferred to Unit TBA by ADCHQ for Flying Duties.

12 Mar 60

F/O WG Bland transferred in from 416 Squadron St. Hubert.

F/L DF Syms, Air/P, proceeded on TD to attend Flight Controller Course at Tyndall. Mr. Don Miller, representative from Occidental Life Insurance, visited the station for a one week period.

15 Mar 60

F/L JR Bourassa was appointed Detachment Commander of Val d’Or Detachment for period 1 Apr to 30 Nov 60. Activity around Val d’Or Detachment while arrangements were made for rations, accommodations and operational requirements for exercise. Occidental Life Insurance selling like "hot cakes". Dance held in Rec. Hall; however, interest is dropping off.

22 Mar 60

New staff car (1960 Ford) arrived for the Commanding Officer.

25 Mar 60

Commenced equipment installation for two VHF and one UHF channel in Right Tower, Room 302 for emergency and stand-by purposes. Mess Dinner was held in the Officer’s Mess, with Mr. Hastie of Val d’Or being the guest speaker on investments. Four officers from USAF Ramore were also in attendance. They arrived at Senneterre airstrip with Beaver aircraft and were weathered in for the weekend. Liquor lock-up in Officer’s Mess was broken into. Airmen’s Quarters were searched, and a 40 ounce bottle of the finest Haig and Haig was retrieved.

Boy Scouts held a Father and Son Banquet in the Sergeant’s Mess.

The Women’s Auxiliary presented a fashion show in the Recreation Hall.

RCASC stated they will deliver rations to Val d’Or Detachment during the period of the operation. AFP working on junior grade gang of looters. Recovering lots of loot.

LAW WJ Barrett, ClkAdm, LAC G Leikeim Radar Tech, LAC JOO Ferguson FtrCop, and LAC JM Avery FtrCop promoted to substantive rank of Corporal.

LAC GH Chandler FtrCop, LAC RM Caron FtrCop, and LAC JF Theriault FtrCop promoted to Acting Corporal.

Cpl. JJA Giroux OpMME drove through both ends of his PMQ garage with 1960 Oldsmobile. Acceleration stuck on way into garage so he went through the rear of the garage – shoved car smoothly into reverse and took entrance out – walls slid out and door fell on top of car.

1 Apr 60

F/L DB Pengelly arrived from Station Foymount for period of one month TD to replace F/L Bourassa at this Unit. One Squadron from Uplands moved into Val d’Or Detachment for period of a month. Two airmen in Val d’Or jail for giving the city police a hard time. They were released to RCAF Custody on 4 Apr and each received $50.oo fine from CO. Also, one had a posting to SAGE cancelled.

2 Apr 60

The 15-J-1D Synthetic Trainer was given an Annual Overhaul from 2 to 10 Apr by RCA Victor.

4 Apr 60

S/L HJ Tennant and F/O WA Sage proceeded on TD to ADCHQ to attend a one day briefing re administration arrangements for RCAF personnel at integrated SAGE sites in USA. S/L AR Abercrombie and Sgt. JJJ Sloan conducted an investigation on a weekend party held at Val d’Or Detachment at the AOC’s request. Nothing serious. Commenced installation of two AF/URG-60 receivers, two TE-712 transmitters and a small switchboard unit at Val d’Or Detachment for use by deployed Squadrons.

5 Apr 60

F/O CE Taylor, AS/FtrC, proceeded on TD for three days to 4601 Support Wing, Federal Electric Corporation, Streator, Illinois. W/C CC Underhill, CO, proceeded on TD to attend CO’s Conference at ADCHQ. S/L HJ Tennant was Acting Commanding Officer for the period.

11 Apr 60

Sgt. Racine, ComTech(G), attended Annual Communications Maintenance Conference at AMCHQ. The Operational and Technical evaluation of the AN/FPS-20A was carried out by a team from the Electronic Welfare Unit at St. Hubert; with F/L PJH Sheasby as Project Officer. F/O EN Krahn proceeded on TD to Station Cold Lake for approximately three weeks to attend Controller Basic Course No 9, Phase 2. F/O M Hewitt Med/Nur proceeded on TD to CFMSTC Camp Borden to attend the Nursing Officer’s Orientation Course for a period of two weeks. F/O Munn, Med/Nur, ADCHQ arrived on TD at this Unit for a one month period.

13 Apr 60

A/V/M MacBrien AOC ADC arrived Val d’Or Detachment for the presentation of the Fire Prevention Award to the Station Fire Chief, Sgt. G Ferris. W/C CC Underhill accompanied Sgt. Ferris to Val d’Or. Sgt. JJJ Sloan, NCO i/c AFP, was called downtown to assist the Provincial Police in arresting a local citizen who had murdered his infant daughter. Cpl. Klassen, AFP, escorted the prisoner to Amos jail.

15 Apr 60

F/O MJB Fehrenbach, Pers/Adm., Station PAdO, was released for marriage purposes.

Trade Examinations were written by airmen.

21 Oct 60

Cocked Pistol Exercise. Radar Jamming equipment located and put out of action in record time. Infiltrators at Val d’Or Detachment captured armed party dispatched from Senneterre and sabotaged two aircraft before being captured.

24 Apr 60

Approximately 45 persons from the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Barraute visited the Station. They toured the Operations Building and Recreation Centre, and afterwards, were entertained in the Officers Mess. Very successful. F/O WA Sage, AS/FtrC, proceeded on TD to attend SAGE Operator Training Course commencing 25 Apr and terminating 17 Jun at Richards Gebaur AFB MO.

25 Apr 60

F/O WG Bland proceeded on TD to attend Controller Basic Course No 10 at Station Cold Lake. Twenty-five visitors arrived for a conference on ADCOM 2 Installation. Cpl. N Melenchuk proceeded on TD to Camp Borden to attend Insect Pest Control Course from 25 to 29 Apr 60.

F/O WK Beattle SOPhoto ADCHQ arrived at Val d’Or Detachment for Staff Visit at Val d’Or and Senneterre.

4 May 60

F/L GS Machan AS/FtrC arrived on TD at this Unit for period 4 to 13 May for purpose of training conference and SAGE briefing. F/O Proctor AMCHQ STelO visited Station Senneterre for a period of three days for the purpose of Radome Inspection of Installation.

First CO’s Parade was held for the summer months. North West Telephone Company commenced cable installation for subscriber service to PMQ residents.

6 May 60

CE Section cleaned the water reservoir.

7 May 60

A very successful Bowling Banquet was held in the Combined Mess which closed the bowling season for the past year. Trophies were presented and dancing was held later in the NCO’s Lounge.

9 May 60

P/O Greer proceeded on TD to Station Cold Lake to attend Controller Basic Course No 11 for approximately three weeks. F/O WI Suttie Air/Obs proceeded on TD to Station Cold Lake for approximately three weeks to attend CPU Course No 65. Cpl. Huntley moved into PMQ 54 as fast as Sgt. Pettigrew’s furniture could be removed as his apartment in the Town of Senneterre was flooding.

10 May 60

F/O CE Taylor AS/FtrC transferred out to ADCHQ for duties at Site PIN.

11 May 60

All roads out of Senneterre were flooding; however, they were still passable.

13 May 60

S/L HJ Tennant Air/Obs transferred to ADCHQ for duties with RCAF Staff at 25th NORAD Region Seattle Air Defence Sector McChord AFB Washington.

15 May 60

The Canadian Legion Stage show "Golden Folies" from Val d’Or played in the Rec. Centre. A cast of 60 persons entertained.

16 May 60

F/O RW Baillieul Tech/CE transferred in from Station Greenwood to this Unit for duties as SCEO. S/L AW Bishop, F/L TC Elton, F/L RM Muir and F/L LWF Beasleigh SOGE Branch ADCHQ and W/C EC Snider Sec Edgar arrived here on TD for five days for purpose of AC&W Visiting Team.

17 May 60

North West Telephone Company commenced installation of telephones in PMQs.

18 May 60

Search and Rescue Team were dispatched at 0535 hours for dragging operations in the area of Cedar Rapids for two drowned Indian boys. Operation was unsuccessful in that the bodies were not recovered.

19 May 60

LAC WCS Luce METech was presented with CVSM by W/C CC Underhill on CO’s Parade. The Station Girl Guides and Brownies held a Mother and Daughter Banquet in the Combined Mess.

20 May 60

Clean up day was observed. Mr. Lamothe and Mr Verdun of King Merritt and Company visited the Station and lectured on Mutual Funds.

23 May 60

Sunday routine observed – Victoria Day.

24 May 60

WO2 RJ MacLeod Tel/MSupt(G) transferred to AMCHQ STelO.

26 May 60

F/O F Carroll Tech/Tel, STelO, departed on release to take up employment with Northern Electric in Ottawa. Invaded by mosquitos once again.

27 May 60

CE Secyion replaced McDonnel Water Control Valve on the waste heat boilers in the Power Plant. Sylvestre boy, son of one of our CE labourers, drowned at Lac Tiblemont. Dragging operations by Search and Rescue Team again. Body was recovered 28 May by a civilian boat taking part in the operation.

28 May 60

Power shut down for 2 ˝ hours in Operations Building to allow installation of 200 amp circuit breaker for completion of Radar Improvement Plant.
