RCAF Station Senneterre, PQ
1 June 1960 to 30 Nov 1960

1 Jun 60

Invaded by mosquitos. Aerial spray carried out this date. F/L AK Beak Air/P departed from Station Senneterre on release to take up employment with the Department of Transport in Ottawa. Mr. G McNamara, Civilian Wire Chief, reported on behalf of Canadian Telephone Company. F/L JMC Morin Med/MO transferred to Quebec Military Hospital for Post Graduate Training. Dr. L Trudeau from Montreal was employed as Unit Doctor for period 1- 30 Jun 60. AFP’s commenced checking PMQ dependent’s bicycles for a Bicycle Rodeo.

In order to relieve Fire Picquet and still permit augmentation of Fire Fighter manpower, a Volunteer Fire Brigade was formed under the direction of the Fire Chief. Volunteers were taken from the MSE, Supply, CE, Heating Plant, Recreation and Radar Sections. The Brigade is trained each Friday afternoon by members of the Fire Department under the direction of the Fire Chief, Sgt. Ferris. The volunteer brigade numbers thirteen men.

F/O DA Dobie Tech/Tel reported in on transfer from Alberta U Squadron. F/O HS Shufelt Acc reported in from Station Sea Island on transfer to this Unit. F/L EH Jones Chaplain (P) proceeded on annual Protestant Retreat from 6 to 9 Jun and Chaplain’s Refresher Course from 14 to 14 Jun, convening at Trinity College in Toronto.

F/L OJ Mallieau Acc handed over duties of SAO to F/O HS Shufelt before departing on transfer to Station Gander. F/O Edge and F/O Rutten arrived on TD from Station Foymount and Station Falconbridge respectively for Operations Duties. Golden Hawks arrived at Val d’Or Detachment.

SOAF Inspection carried out by F/L JC Carroll ADCHQ. The softball programme on the Unit was activated with five intersection teams in one league and a three team ladies league was formed. Golden Hawks put on an Air Show for Station Senneterre.

8 Jun 60

The Station Fire Chief, one Corporal and two Airmen were detailed for duty as crash crew during the Air Show at Val d’Or Detachment. An Air Show was held at Val d’Or Detachment, featuring the Golden Hawks, the Red Knight, 428 Squadron CF-100’s, 101 S&R Squadron Canso, 408 Squadron Lancaster and 436 Squadron C-119. The coordinating committee sponsoring the Air Show was handled jointly by Senneterre and Val d’Or Detachment. All advance publicity was handled by the OC of the Detachment, F/L Bourassa. There were some eight to ten thousand spectators present during the Air Show, which was very successful. Remodelling started on the Airmen’s Canteen.

A Bistro Night and Beatnik Party and Dance was held in the Rec. Centre for all personnel. F/O B Wooding AS/FtrC was transferred in from Station Lac St. Denis.

11 Jun 60

A Bicycle Rodeo was held for the dependent’s children, with the Station AFPs acting as judges. Care of bicycles, safe operation, road rules and riding ability were tested. Forty-four children participated.

13 Jun 60

F/L HS Moore as NDO and Sgt. MB Fletcher GDefMN arrived on TD from Station North Bay to arrange Nuclear Defence Schedules.

14 Jun 60

Canadian General Electric conducted an overhaul of the AN/FPS-6 during the period 14 – 24 Jun. F/L Cowell, Command Fire Marshall, visited Station Senneterre and Val d’Or Detachment. F/O WA Sage, AS/FtrC transferred to ADCHQ for duty with RCAF Staff at 25 NORAD Region Spokane Air Defence Sector, Larson AFB, Washington.

WO2 JE LaFranchise TelMSupt(G) arrived on transfer from Station Clinton.

16 Jun 60

S/L ND Cairns, Air/P, arrived on transfer from 432 AW Squadron Bagotville for duties as Station COpsO. Beechcraft missing after overshoot from Val d’Or Runway – lost from scopes – weather poor. Air Search was organized out of Trenton 17 Jun and Search and Rescue Team dispatched from Station Senneterre. Aircraft was found 2 – 3 miles from Val d’Or Airport after co-pilot, Mr. John Reid, stumbled out of the woods near East Sullivan on 18 Jun 60. Mr. Manothe, of Lamothe Construction Company, Amos, owner of the aircraft was trapped in the cabin and burned to death. The pilot, Mr. McBroom, was pulled from the aircraft by the co-pilot and left under the shelter of the wing. Both of his arms were broken – was found dead from exposure and black fly and mosquito bites when S&R arrived on the scene.

F/O RR Nordquist and Mr. DP Grundy AMCHQ STelO visited Station Senneterre to discuss the overhaul of radar system and inspection of trainers.

22 Jun 60

F/L DR Paige AS/FtrC transferred in from Station Foymount. Dr, JA Patton, Ottawa NORAD Sector SDC Representative arrived at Senneterre to discuss the disposition and use of obsolete STP films and urgent Unit STP problems. Quebec Provincial Elections held this date.

24 Jun 60

A Station Bingo was held in the Rec. Hall. Renovations to the Airmen’s Club completed. W/C Underhill CO officially opened the Club that evening.

25 Jun 60

Lobster parties held on Station. Lobster was flown in by Station Bagotville CF-100.

27 Jun 60

F/L JMJM Giguere Med/MO reported in this date for duties as SMO. W/C CC Underhill, CO, became the proud father of a son, John David. Trade Board results arrived this date.

30 Jun 60

CD’s were presented on CO’s Parade by W/C Underhill to F/L HF Hull SCEO, and Sgt. G Mallette, Cpl. KW Bartlett and Cpl. JJ Bernier. Officers Promotions:

F/O HG Meinert Air/Obs promoted to substantive rank of Flight Lieutenant.

F/O WG Bland Obs/AI received a three year extension.

F/O WR Cann AS/FtrC received a one year extension.

AN/FPS-20 and AN/GPS-T2 courses were held during the month of June. During the month of June, all PMQs were given a fire inspection by a Senior Officer accompanied by an NCO Fire Fighter. All Station Buildings were inspected in the same manner.

Children’s swimming classes were commenced for the summer holidays. Eighty dependent children registered for the classes which were held each week day morning. F/L R Blair Reserve Chaplain (P) reported in for special duties for the period 1 – 31 Jul 60, during which time, F/L EH Jones, Station Chaplain (P) was on Annual Leave. Three courses of two days each were held during Jun and Jul on SIF (AN/GPA-501). New Tower Badge system in effect at the Operations Building.

S/L AR Abercrombie CTSO departed this Unit on transfer to AFHQ.

4 Jul 60

F/L Ward and F/O Donovan reported in from Reserve Unit for duty in Operations Section. Qualified operations personnel commenced six hour course in Teletype.

5 Jul 60

Money was stolen from the Juke Box in the Airmen’s Canteen and also from the commercial washing machine in the Airmen’s Barracks. Search of the barracks was conducted on the CO’s authority, with no results. Audit was carried out by Deputy Minister Auditors.

8 Jul 60

The final bingo of the season was held in the Rec. Hall with the Jack Pot and all prizes being given away.

9 Jul 60

Two fires were reported during this period. Both fires were caused by smoking in bed and occurred in the NCO’s Barrack Block on 8 and 9 Jul 60. In both cases, losses were recovered from the individuals concerned.

F/C AT Downs Tech/Tel posted to Station Senneterre from Station Foymount for Summer Training.

The Archery Club was re-organized and the summer program commenced.

W/C CC Underhill, CO, departed the Station on Annual Leave for period 15 Jul to 4 Aug 60. S/L ND Cairns COpsO assumed temporary command of the Station for that period.

An outdoor summer dance with South Seas decorations was held in the Tennis Court. Mr. M D’Errico of Beaver Asphalt Company was taking photos of the Unit. AFPs confiscated his film.

F/L JA Archibald Tech/Tel transferred in from AFHQ VCAS CTEL DRDP to Station Senneterre.

19 Jul 60

LAW Hawkes and LAW Sills, both FtrCops, were elected to represent this Unit at the CNE in Toronto.

The quarterly inspection of the Operations Building alarm system was carried out on 21 and 22 Jul by Veillet and Gosselin Company of Val d’Or.

23 Jul 60

The Senneterre sports teams proceeded to Station Parent for the Summer Carnival competitions. Forty-eight personnel – male and female – participated.

25 Jul 60

S/L ND Cairns COpsO, F/O JH Jette STelO, and F/O AR Barnett AS/FtrC proceeded on TD for one day to Sector Edgar to discuss modifications to the Battle Commander’s Cabin. F/L JH Maxwell acting CO for the day.

A Stag Party was held in the Officer’s Mess to welcome F/L SM Deane to the Club of "Henpecked Husbands". Equipment overhaul and relocated in Controller’s Cabin from 27 Jul to 3 Aug 60.

F/L HF Hull Tech/CE SCEO departed on transfer to 2 (F) Wing.

Radar Section assisted with the renovations to the Duty Director’s and Battle Commander’s Cabins from 29 Jul to 4 Aug.

During the month of July, the playground equipment was repaired, repainted and re-erected in the school playground by the Fire Fighters during their spare time.

A Station Picnic was held at Lake Tiblemont, sponsored by the PMQ Council. A Beach Dance and Corn Boil was held in the evening on the lake shore.

F/O FRLY Cliché Tech/CE reported in from Station Winnipeg for duties as SCEO. Mr. Reddy of Canadian General Electric visited this Unit from 8 Aug to 11 Aug to give technical assistance on the AN/FPS-6 height error.

RCA arrived to begin the AN/FPS-507 installation.

15 Aug 60

A four team Flag Football League was formed on the Unit with two games to be played each week. A three team Soccer League was formed and commenced playing.

F/O Gilmour Air/P reported in from 433 Squadron North Bay on transfer to this Unit.

17 Aug 60

Installation of Test Board completed by Tel Maintenance Crew.

20 Aug 60

The Airwomen’s All Star Softball Team travelled to Station St. Huberts by air and defeated the ADC Airwomen.

21 Aug 60

The Hawks, intersection softball winners, travelled to Station Parent to compete in the RCAF Zone IV semi-finals. The Senneterre team defeated Parent two games to one.

22 Aug 60

Vancal (Canadian Aviation Electronics) arrived 22 Aug and departed 6 Sep. Calibration of all our test equipment was completed.

The PMQ Council elections were held for a Mayor and six Councillors. A Station Dance was held to present the Council and Mayor. A Northern Electric Team of fifteen men completed an overhaul of the AN/FPS-20 during the period 8 Sep to 22 Sep.

The Soap Box Derby was held for the PMQ children and was followed by a Softball Game for the PMQ Council Trophy, which is presented to the winner of the softball game on Derby Day between the boys from the Town of Senneterre and the RCAF Station. Won by the Town.

Battle of Britain Sunday was observed with a Church Parade.

19 Sep 60

S/L P Ardeline AS/FtrC and F/O IJ Anderson AS/FtrC arrived for Summer Camp training. Basic Theory refresher course held for trade board candidates 19 Sep to 11 Oct.

An overhaul of the 15-J-1D was completed by Mr. Gravel of RCA from 20 to 23 Sep. F/O KB Jacobs ASWelO ADCHQ arrived on TD for a two day period for the purpose of interviewing personnel.

S/L Campbell, S/L Lunn ADCHQ and F/L Moore Station North Bay arrived for a Simulated Nuclear Fallout Exercise.

Captain T LeSage dentist and his assistance Private JA Frett arrived on TD for duty in the dental Clinic from 1 Oct to 30 Oct 60. Moose hunting season open – Sgt. Belanger SWO and Mr. Pomerleau successful.

F/O RJ Gilmour Air/O proceeded on TD to attend Controllers Basic Course 15 for approximately two weeks at Station Cold Lake. Northern Electric Crew arrived and replaced three VHF Antenna at RX Site. Installation of the AN/GLH-501 Azimuth Time Recorder was completed by Canadian Arsenals 3 – 5 Oct inclusive. Wearing of Winter Uniforms compulsory.

A two man team from Northern Electric installed a prototype modification on the AN/FPS-20 X-80 rectifier cabinet during 4 – 6 Oct.

Fire Prevention Week was celebrated during the week 9 – 15 Oct. The Fire Section staged an opening day parade through the PMQ area, passing out pamphlets and "Sparky" comic books to the children. Fire Fighters and volunteers were dressed in comic costumes. During the week, the Fire Section gave lectures and demonstrations to Station Personnel. As a climax to the weeks activities, the annual "Fireman’s Ball" was held in the Rec. Hall 14 Oct. Invited guests to the Ball included members of Fire and Police Departments in the District.

Pirates defeated Yankees in World Series. Handing over of the AN/FPS-507 Height Finder from RCA took place.

Administration and PMQ telephones renumbered.

Three courses of one week duration were held during Oct and Nov on the AN/FPS-507. F/L JM Lapointe arrived on TD for a Verification of Funds.

21 Oct 60

The Station Sports Banquet and Dance was held. Awards for Summer Sports were presented by W/C Underhill, CO, to the winning teams.

22 Oct 60

A children’s novelty swim meet was held in order to demonstrate the accomplishments of the children to their parents. An East-West Grey Cup Flag Football game was played in the Station Sports Field, with the West winning. Reverend Father J Brien, Chaplain (RC) visited this Unit, and seven Brothers from the town of Senneterre toured the Operations Building.

F/O JJ Grogan Pers/AFSec and FS WF Hannan ADCHQ arrived on TD for a period of three days for the purpose of conducting counter sabotage course. A staff inspection of the Radar Section was carried out by F/O Alloway of ADCHQ on 24 and 25 Oct.

S.L Grigg SORG ADCHQ arrived on TD for a two day Staff Visit.

26 Oct 60

Communications Section installed a temporary antenna for Broadcast Control at TX2 Site. A Ground Infiltration Exercise was conducted by FS WF Hannan of ADCHQ. Results were very successful.

A bingo was held by the PMQ Council to commence the season and to raise funds for the Station Christmas Party which is held each year for the dependent children. Poppies were sold on the Station this date. Sales totaled $62.44.

29 Oct 60

Halloween Parties held in Officers and NCOs Messes as well as the Coast to Coast Club. The ADC Children’s Wire Swim Meet was held in the Station Swimming Pool.

31 Oct 60

F/O DJ French Acc arrived on TD at this Station from Station Bagotville for the purpose of acting as technical member of M&I Audit Board. W/C Underhill, CO, presented awards to children who were successful in the various contests that took place during the Fire Prevention Week. Trick or Treat night in PMQs.

1 Nov 60

During the month of November, the Fire Section staged a toy drive throughout the PMQs. The toys collected are repaired or reconditioned and prior to Christmas, are turned over to the Knights of Columbus in Senneterre for distribution to the needy families of Senneterre and district. Last year toys were distributed to 32 families, wherein, 150 children were pleased to receive toys for Christmas.

Snow arrived this weekend, but not for long, as it disappeared within a few days.

One NCO from Station North Bay arrived on TD for the purpose of Nuclear Defence Training for a period of two weeks.

8 Nov 60

A short visit to this Station by A/V/M WR MacBrien AOC/ADCHQ and his Aide de Camp S/L Marsh. Cocktail party and buffet was held in the Officer’s Mess in his honor. Search and Rescue Party was sent out on a search north of LaSarre for a missing hunter.

11 Nov 60

Remembrance Day Parade was held in the Town of Senneterre, with one Flight on Parade.

12 Nov 60

Party in Airmen’s Club sponsored by Labatts Brewery of Val d’Or.

13 Nov 60

A party of approximately fifty personnel proceeded to Val d’Or for Remembrance Day Parade.

15 Nov 60

F/O B Jacobs ASWelO ADCHQ paid a one day visit to this Station for the purpose of interviewing personnel. Hobby Shop in operation as of this date.

16 Nov 60

The power mains were down to TX2 Site due to high winds. Restored two days later when two poles had to be replaced.

17 Nov 60

Station Orderly Room’s establishment was increased by one Clerk Admin. Air evacuation arranged for Constable Roy of the RCMP from Val d’Or to Montreal – ill with infected throat. Mr. Reddy of Canadian General Electric did a check on the electrical zone of the AN/FPS-6 antenna.

18 Nov 60

Mr. Aldershaw of Canadian Marconi visited our Unit to give a lecture on the care and handling of the 7182 magnetron for the AN/FPS-507.

19 Nov 60

G/C ES Light Director of Religious Administration (P) AFHQ and W/C W Rodger SORA/P ADCHQ arrived for dedication of the new Protestant Chapel, which took place on 20 Nov.

25 Nov 60

F/O MM Lukacs PAdO departed on TD for Station Centralia to attend Administrative Course.

29 Nov 60

The RCA Mobile Repair Party arrived to begin the SM-72 modification for the AN/FPS-6.

30 Nov 60

"Operation Dry Glass" ceased operations at Val d’Or Detachment as of this date. "Operation Dry Tank 3" commenced operating out of Val d’Or for the period 1 Dec 60 to 31 Mar 61.

Painting – Exterior of six PMQs, interior of nineteen PMQs, runway markers at Val d’Or Detachment, interior of Power Plant, three rooms at Station Hospital at Val d’Or, exterior of five buildings – Supply, MSE, Power Plant, Ration Building, Bulk Fuel and Pumping Building at Val d’Or.

Air conditioning system in the Control Tower at Val d’Or Detachment.

Replacement of eight poles on power line.

Road repairs on Station and access roads.

Extended roof eaves at Recreation Centre.

Laying of floor tile in hallway of Combined Mess.

By-pass switches for APU’s at TX1, TX2, and RX Sites.

Installation of double throw switches in five PMQs.

Landscaping – Sodding around PMQ driveways and slopes and ground stabilization in front of new chapel.

Construction of a Supply Scrap Compound.

Relocation of VHF/UHF (electric power supply).

Renovated the Duty Director’s cabin.

Temporary draughting pit for Fire Hall made by damming up ditch behind Supply Section.

Operational commitments of the AC&W Radar Recording Camera System resulted in 14 rolls of 35mm x 100 feet film being used to record thirteen exercises.

There were 129 K5s (Photo Work Order) in this period. Reprints and 63 new requirements used 588 sheets of 4 x 5 film, 1067 sheets of 8 x 10 inch photo paper and 173 flashbulbs.

Orange 1 requested to stay on channel frequency and was lost by Puritan Controller. Orange 1 crashed by Puritan 1000 feet short of runway. Extensive damage to aircraft. Pilot not injured. Orange 2 and 3 landed in St. Hubert.
