HISTORICAL SUMMARY

Introduction

The Unit is charge with the responsibility to operate and maintain a Long Range Radar capable of functioning efficiently in a Sage, Mode III or BUIC 1, or Mode IV environment. The Unit is classed as a NORAD Surveillance Site (NSS) and has as its prime function the continuous semi-automatic reporting of Search and Height information to the Direction Centre (DC) at Duluth NORAD Sector HQ (DUADS).

Major Functions of the Unit

(1) Unit activities were normal during the period 1 June to 31 December.

(2) Operations – The operational facilities performed without major problems

(3) Training – Training of operational and technical personnel was conducted by training exercises and classes which included special classroom instruction in the T-2 computer under guidance of a Burroughs Technical Representative. 106 airmen and Sr. NCOs were trained in the care and handling of the Sten gun and the 9 mm pistol. Limited training of a Ground Search party was conducted. Five personnel were given basic Ground Search Party training at Station Vancouver. 73 personnel were given water safety training.

(4) Technical Modifications were made to certain radar equipment and some new equipment was accepted into service.

(5) Administration Normal activities prevailed.

(6) Organization Nil changes were affected other than the changes in nomenclature of technical personnel required under the SAGE system.

(7) Official Visits and Inspections AVM MM Hendrick and his party of six officers inspected the Unit on 24-25 June. Routine Command inspections were carried out through the period.

(8) Recreation Recreational facilities on the Unit are minimal. A "do-it-yourself" softball diamond, skating rink and rifle range were completed by Unit personnel. Installation of an artificial ice plant in the Curling Rink was commenced under NPF auspices. This activity, by far, enjoys the fullest participation and is a great boost to Unit morale. Softball zone eliminations with Station Armstrong were held.

(9) Public Relations Good relations exist with the Town and the surrounding area with participation in parades and other activities by Unit personnel.
