The 642^nd Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, Commanded by Major George H Wolfe, is attached to the 64^th Air Division (Defense). It is a GCI station responsible to the 640^th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron (ADC).

During this reporting period there were no major changes in key personnel.

Operations:

Problems Met - The AN/GPS-T5 simulator was inoperative or substandard for the first two months of this quarter which considerably curtailed Director and Intercept Technician training. Because of the age and nature of this equipment it is extremely difficult to maintain. However, for the last month of the period it was maintained enough to produce acceptable results. Depot overhaul of this equipment is programmed for the first quarter of 1960.

The IFF problem referred to in the previous quarter report contained through the first week of this quarter. The problem was resolved with assistance of Radar Maintenance personnel from the 640^th AC&W Squadron. During the Depot overhaul of the prime radar equipment a similar problem developed, drastically reducing our control capabilities for the period 16 November 1959 through 15 December 1959.

During the period 1 through 10 November 1959 we experienced Communications problems on all tactical frequencies which prevented the control of fighter aircraft for training exercises. The trouble was traced to the antennas which were overhauled.

The manning problem reported in the previous report continued through this quarter. Additional spaces were authorized during this quarter to become effective the first quarter of 1960. The personnel requisitioning has been accomplished but the filling of these much needed slots is not expected to be accomplished until March or April 1960.

Projects, Plans, Progress – The Direction Center Operations building equipment layout was standardized in accordance with the 64^th Air Division standards.

Personnel:

Gains – During this period, this unit has gained two (2) Senior Master Sergeants. One (1) assigned to the Operations Sections and the other assigned to the C&E Section thereby alleviating any problem that would have existed in these sections.

Authorized Versus Assigned Problems – Officers assigned 13; authorized 12. Enlisted personnel assigned 135; authorized 128. Civilians assigned 16; Authorized 17.

AFSC Problems – No problems or malassignment rates exists at this time.

Training Program and Needs – Our training program continues to operate adequately; however, we continue to have difficulty in obtaining training literature.

Equipment Performance:

The renovation of the Receiver Building was completed; the work being accomplished by assigned personnel. However, the plan to move the Squadron Ground to Air Transmitting equipment (as per 64^th Air Division Project 1-59) from Pepperrell AFB to Red Cliff has been indefinitely deferred.

The AN/TRC-11 Telephone equipment was prepared for turn-in.

All radio channels entering the telephone main distribution frames were rewired by the Wire Maintenance Section.

The Ground to Air Receiving and Transmitting ability of the unit was hampered due to antenna trouble. This is a recurring difficulty which is encountered during periods of precipitation and high winds. Moisture enters the antennas and shorts out the signal. At this time a satisfactory remedy has not been devised.

The teletype portion of the tropo radio circuit to Elliston Ridge was installed and is now in operations.

The prime radar equipment, video mapper, IFF transmitter-receiver units and the radome pressurizing units received depot overhaul by Canadian Marconi Company.

In order to comply with the division standardization plan the following items of electronic equipment were relocated (or removed) within the Operations Building:

AN/GPS-T2 Trainer – from radar maintenance room to the left room under the dias.
AN/UPS-T5 Trainer – from upper dias to the left-hand room under the dias.
AN/GPA-30 Video Mapper – from radar maintenance room to the right-hand room under the dias.
0A-947/FST-1 Gap Filler Monitor – from operations room to right-hand room under the dias.
0A-98 Height Indicator (2ea) – removed from operations and awaiting disposition instruction.
0A-99 PPI (4ea) – removed from operations and awaiting disposition instructions.

AN/GPS-T2 Trainer (used from STP) was modified by a Sylvania Company representative. This modification will provide greatly improved simulated ECM during STP exercises.

Equipment maintenance for the period consisted of the following: Depot Maintenance 556 hours; Routine Maintenance 695 hours; Emergency Maintenance 74 hours.

Maintenance and Supply Problems:

One 64173, T/Sgt. John S Gardner, was assigned for duty. Sergeant Gardner will proceed to Detachment 1 at Elliston Ridge in March 1960 to fill the vacancy which will exist due to the March rotation of A/2C David R Rowe presently at Detachment 1. No forecast of personnel assignment to fill the vacancy of Sergeant Gardner has been received. The re-warehousing started last quarter was completed and all property reclassified as required. The Supply Section operated very smoothly during the quarter and no problems of any consequence were encountered.

Supply Support – From Division – The Supply Section enjoys exceptional support from the 64^th Air Division. From Support Base – The Supply Section is receiving very good service from the BSO, Pepperrell AFB.

Transportation Problems – Material – No transportation problems exist in the transportation of material area. Personnel – Same.

Surpluses – All property that becomes excess to the squadron requirements is turned in to the Support Base. No problem exists in this area due to the location.
