Command Section:

The Civic-Military Relations Board held a luncheon in the dining hall in February 1963. Honored guests were the Mayor of St. Anthony, Mr. George Nichols and Dr. Gordon Thomas of the Grenfell Mission. The Squadron Commander, Major James E Cashman and staff members attended also.

Technical Sergeant Frederick R Kennedy was reassigned to the ZI and replaced by Technical Sergeant Wesley, Grant, Jr. We increased our airman strength with Airman First Class Lonnie W Wise reporting in.

The squadron received a Commendation Certificate from the Goose Air Defense Sector for its outstanding public relations with the neighboring town of St. Anthony.

Operations Section:

During the period between 1 January 1963 and 31 March 1963, Operations was normal with the following activities: SM/Sgt. James L Jones assumed the duties of NCOIC, vice M/Sgt. Tillman B Hutto; Captain Jon A Morrill assumed the duties of Operations Training Officer, vice Captain Lowell JK Davis; S/Sgt. Cletus E Aynes assumed the duties of Operations Training NCO, vice T/Sgt. James W Snyder; Captain Aaron W Smith was assigned to the section and assumed the duties of STP Officer and Intelligence Officer, vice Captain Walter E King, Jr.; Captain Herbert A Keenan was assigned to the section and entered in Intercept training.

Captain Lowell JK Davis departed the station for assignment to California. M/Sgt. Tillman B Hutto departed the station for assignment to Mississippi. T/Sgt. HL Parris and T/Sgt. James W Snyder departed the station for assignment to California. S/Sgt. Royal J Fugere departed the station for assignment to Alaska. T/Sgt. Peter Stepanis, A/1C Teddie Bradley, A/1C Vincent J Licciardi, A/2C Gerald Hammer, and A/2C Richard A Jackson were assigned to the section. Three NCO’s were administered OJT for the 27270A AFSC, and four airmen were administered OJT for the 27350A AFSC. One airman was up-graded to the 37350A AFSC.

The section participated in one line mission and twelve simulated missions. Eighteen hours of ICT training was conducted and twenty-eight hours of Academic training was administered to the crew personnel. Work was accomplished on the SAC SCRIBS to bring them up to date in the EWO program. The training office was moved from the Operations building to Tower #3. The section is up to strength in officers and short one enlisted man.

Base Engineer Activities:

The Civil Engineering activities for the quarter ending 31 March 1963 were of normal procedures. The Mobile Maintenance Team was on this station for approximately two months, and the several projects completed were rehab and repair of the following:

These projects were long overdue and the personnel utilizing the facilities find them a great asset with these projects completed. A great deal of satisfaction and pride is felt throughout the station. The Civil Engineering shops has been engaged in preventative maintenance, trying to accomplish inside maintenance and repairs during winter months whereby spending more time on exterior maintenance during summer months.

During the reporting period, the Power Plant and Heating Plant were painted. Canadian Marconi have installed a new water pump. All other maintenance and repairs have been normal.

Fire Department – During this reporting period, two inspections were made; one by Harmon and one by Goose Air Defense Sector. No major discrepancies were reported and the fire prevention program is still the main topic on this station. A few minor discrepancies were corrected on the spot.

Transportation – Vehicle maintenance was accomplished during the quarter, but considerable difficulties are being experienced trying to obtain parts for the travelettes. The snow fall at this station has not been too severe, and no difficulties were experienced keeping the roads and areas clear. Contract airlift has been accomplished by EPA, and during the quarter the following quantities were flown:

In addition, one trip was made by military vehicles for supplies and 16,000 pounds of cargo transported in and out. Also, one commercial vehicle brought in 10,000 pounds.

Communications and Electronics:

General – In addition to normal maintenance and operational activities, the following special projects and activities were initiated, and/or completed during the months of January, February and March.

During January, the Marconi DLM team arrived to install eight AS-1097 antennas at the Transmitter Site. These antennas replaced the AS-505 antennas. The installation was completed 30 January 1963 and has completely eliminated the antenna shorting problem experienced with the AS-505 antennas.

During February, S/Sgt. Lewis spent a week at Goose Air Defense Sector for familiarization and orientation on AFM 66-1. Since his return there has been an improvement in the preparation of all forms used in conjunction with this program.

During March, the CEM Section has undergone a more aggressive reorganization. This has enabled the CEM Section to accomplish their mission in a more efficient manner.

Radar Maintenance – During these three months the Radar Section has revised the work shop. A new work bench and test equipment rack has been built. Work Load Control Center and Maintenance Control Center have both been relocated to separate offices. New status boards have been accomplished. A comprehensive training program has been initiated, utilizing civilian CTS personnel. A separate office has been provided for their use.

Radio Maintenance – All eight mobile radios have been taken to Harmon AFB and overhauled or modified by Marconi. These radios are now in operation and all are working satisfactorily. Our T-217 transmitter has been returned from Marconi Depot and has been put into operation giving full backup capability on multi-channel.

Wire Maintenance – A complete inventory has been completed on "Project Golden Rod". A private telephone line was installed by CNT in the Officers Club and a pay phone was installed in the hallway outside the NCO Club.
