The CO and CTSO proceeded on TD to Caswell and Bangor USAF AC&W Squadrons for purpose of familiarization. S/L RE Churchill assumed the duties of Acting CO.

3 Dec 56

Mr. Buchan, AFHQ, DCED arrived on TD for an inspection of new construction. CO and CTSO on TD.

4 Dec 56

CO and CTSO on TD. Sunstroke 19 crashed near Rouses Point. This a/c had previously been in contact with 11 AC&W.

5 Dec 56

CO and CTSO on TD. F/L JTC Elton wrote Staff College entrance exams this date. S/L RE Churchill presided. Cocked Pistol called by 1 ADCC placing unit on alert.

6 Dec 56

CO and CTSO returned from TD this date. S/L RE Churchill COpsO, relinquishes command of the unit.

7 Dec 56

A/C Reyno, D/AOC arrived at 1230 hours to visit unit. He was accompanied by Mrs. N Reyno, his wife. A/C Reyno proceeded to a luncheon at the Sergeants Mess. Following the luncheon the official party proceeded to the Rec. Hall where the A/C inspected a Guard of Honour under command of F/O WG Moore, SAO. The party then proceeded to the CE and ME Section on inspection. At 1530 hours the party proceeded to the Operations Building for coffee and a briefing by CAdO, COpsO, CTSO and CRC. At 1830 hours the A/C was guest of honour at cocktails and mess dinner in the Officer’s Mess. Other guests included Major Saint-Victor, Reg. du Chaudiere.

Six officers, and nineteen airmen from Three Rivers Squadron arrived for weekend training. A/C Reyno and his wife departed for ADC by car.

10 Dec 56

CO on annual leave, S/L RE Churchill acting CO. Exercise Chancelight V took place operational wise.

12 Dec 56

A firing party under direction of Sgt. JR Gilbert FF, attended funeral services of Cpl. Jobin, ATC at Charlesbourg, PQ. ATC provided the remainder of the funeral party. CO still on annual leave.

14 Dec 56

F/O T Tracy, ADCHQ arrived on routine welfare visit. Six officers and eight airmen arrived from Sherbrooke Auxiliary Squadron. Padre Thompson arrived on his semi-monthly visit. CO returned from annual leave.`

19 Dec 56

Under auspices of PMQ Council and Station Fund, a Christmas Party for children was held in Rec. Hall. Sgt. Charte was Santa Claus.

20 Dec 56

Usual round of Xmas parties held on unit prior to commencement of Xmas leave. Chancelight VI took place.

Christmas leave commenced this date.

Half of unit on Christmas leave so routine very quiet.

Christmas Day. The Officer’s Mess held a reception for the Sgts. Mess at 1000 hours. At 1215 hours the Officers and Sgts. Served the Airmen and Airwomen at Christmas dinner. An enjoyable time was had by all.

Boxing Day. Half the unit is still on Christmas leave.

Unit back on full routine.

New Years Eve. Formal dances were held in the Officers and Sergeants Messes while the Airmen staged a dance in the Rec. Hall. The Royal 22nd Regiment Band was in attendance at the Airmen’s dance.

1 Jan 57

New Year’s Day - The Sergeants Mess held a reception for the Officers at 1000 hours. At 1215 hours a dinner was held for the Airmen and Airwomen, served by the Officers and Senior NCOs.

Sunday routine. F/O PD Mills arrived on transfer from 1 R&CS Clinton to take over duties as TelOpsO, replacing F/O J Sephton.

3 Jan 57

The unit returned to normal routine today as New Year’s leave ended.

7 Jan 57

Mr. Buchan, AFHQ/CE arrived to inspect new construction. Also Mr. WA Parama and Mr. RP Smith, CGE visited the unit.

14 Jan 57

Mr. C Jenkins, of Bell Telephone Company, arrived to assume the duties of Wire Chief from Mr. K Bromby. Mr. Bromby is being transferred to Senneterre.

15 Jan 57

Mr. Peter Epstein, Inspection Services, Ottawa, arrived on seven days TD to inspect telephone installations. Mr. LM Nagata, CGE Tech Rep arrived on a technical visit. Chancelight VII was conducted.

18 Jan 57

Vehicle 89A26-C53, the 15 passenger bus was sold through CADC to Price Motor Sales in Jasper, Ontario. The replacement bus is being eagerly awaited; however, the latest report is that it has not been delivered off contract to 6RD SR at this date. DND vehicle 89A26-C53, (15 passenger bus) picked up by purchaser QTO 5762. A repeat of Chancelight VII called VIIB took place.

F/O Ouellet Support Officer of Air Cadet Squadron in Sherbrooke paid a visit for purpose of familiarization.

The Flying Officers commence their qualifying examinations today. The first paper was General Service Knowledge.

22 Jan 57

Another examination for the Flying Officers today. This time their Trade paper. Mr. DW West and Mr. F Giberson, RCA reps arrived on a technical visit.

The Flying Officers examinations reached their half way mark today with the writing of the geography paper.

The Flying Officers wrote their history paper this date.

Blacksheep 25 in distress (radio) intercepted and escorted to base by Blacksheep 56 under our control. Today the final paper of Qualifying Examinations was written, the Current Events paper. Telephone installation by Quebec Telephone Company in pump houses. Inspected and accepted by Department of Inspection Services.

The long awaited "V" plow c/w leveling wing has finally arrived from RCAF Station Penhold Alberta. No assembly instructions were received with this equipment. From all appearances it will not fit vehicle 78H76-C55 for which it was ordered, without numerous modifications. However this is being investigated and a suitable contractor sought for installation.

Mr. LM Nagata, CGE accompanied by Messrs. Ian Todd, Bill Mortimer, Gary Robinson, Ed Dawson, George Hancin arrived to overhaul radar equipment.

There were 103 personnel on sick parade during the month of January. This was made up of 77 airmen and 26 airwomen.

New Construction

Admin Building - #16

Building closed in and heated. Interior partitions erected and Gyproc application underway. Rough plumbing and Electrical near completion. Rough heating being installed. Water and Sewer services completed. Underground steam lines laid - Z-Crete now being poured. Overall completion 65%. Estimated completion date Apr 57.

Stage II to Rec. Hall (Pool)

Building closed in and heated. Interior wall and ceiling asbestos board application completed except for mastic joints. Tile work not started. Rough plumbing, heating and electrical near completion. Installation in pool equipment room just started. Overall completion 55%. Estimated completion date Apr 57.

Extension to Combined Quarters

Rough Plumbing, heating and electrical completed. Gyproc application completed and joint filling well underway. Interior trim started. Overall completion date 70%. Estimated completion date Mar 57.

1 Bay Fire Hall #60

Building closed in and heated. Interior partitions erected. Gyproc and asbestos board application underway. Rough plumbing and electrical near completion. Rough heating just started. Overall completion 50%. Estimated completion date Apr 57.

ME Extension 7 Bay #18

No change since previous inspection. Building closed in. Overall completion 35%. Estimated completion date Mar 57.

Roads, Grounds and Utilities

Water and Sewer completed to all buildings. Concrete pad and piping in place for steam lines. Z-Crete poured between MH 2 and 3 now being poured to A building. Electrical distribution under way. Transformers on site, poles now being erected. Road work not started. Overall completion 50%. Estimated completion date Jul 57.

Ground Improvements (PMQ) Area

Work closed for the winter. Overall completion 25%. Estimated completion date Jul 57.

The F/Ls commenced the week long ordeal of examinations. Today was General Service Knowledge.

5 Feb 57

The F/L’s wrote their Trade papers today. Completed A for P #31/56 for installation of one spot light for both parking areas at RX and TX.

World History Since 1900 was the paper written today in the QE series.

7 Feb 57

The fourth paper in the F/L’s Qualifying Examination series in Geopolitics.

8 Feb 57

The examinations ended today with the writing of Air Power. F/O Lynch, Armament Officer from Station Bagotville accompanied by two Army Techs and one ME driver arrived to carry out an Armament Inspection. Completed A for P #32/56 for construction of lock up in Tower to facilitate equipment and spare parts for communication and telephone sections.

13 Feb 57

Vehicle 78H76-C55 was roaded to Fantinato and Freres, Thetford Mines, PQ for installation of Adams "V" plow.

14 Feb 57

Mr. J Weir and Mr. McDonald, RCA Tech Reps visited the unit on Technical Inspection.

15 Feb 57

The R211’s on all officers were completed today and taken by hand of CO to ADCHQ. The Recreation facilities on the unit received a boost when four outstanding A for P’s were returned from ADCHQ approved. These A for P’s were:

Alterations in basement of BB "B" for indoor range and hobby shop.

A for P 88/55

Alteration in sub-basement in Combined Mess for handicraft workshop.

Projection Booth in Recreation Hall.

18 Feb 57

Mr. RJ Morrison, CGE arrived for a four day visit to the Telecom Section. A cash count was conducted by S/L Ruel of ADC on the 18 and 19 Feb in conjunction with the M&I audit board ending 31 Dec 56.

20 Feb 57

The CO’s/Section Head Conference was held in the Tower Conference Room. Vehicle 78H76-C55 was roaded back to unit and has been in operation since. The "V" plow is very satisfactory, but does not take a wide enough cut on the road. An estimate is now being obtained for installation of the leveling wing, which will do a much more satisfactory job. CHQ will be contacted for approval of the installation on receipt of the earliest estimate from Fantinato & Freres.

22 Feb 57

Eleven officers, five other ranks arrived in on weekend Reserve training. The Officer’s Mess held a dining-in night to which fifteen Army Officers were invited. These Officers represented a cross selection of Army units in the Quebec Area Command. The party arrived late in the afternoon and were taken on a tour of the unit. At 1800 hours cocktails were served in the Mess followed by a dinner. Completed A for P #50/56 for installation of quarry tile on the floors of the 11 shower stalls in Barrack Blocks "B" and "D".

26 Feb 57

The CO and CAdO proceeded on TD to Station Mont Apica for a familiarization tour. S/L RE Churchill COpsO assumed duties of Acting CO.

27 Feb 57

The CO and CAdO are still on TD at Station Mont Apica.

28 Feb 57

The CO and CAdO returned from TD. S/L RE Churchill relinquishes temporary command. In accordance with instructions from the AOC, ADC the CO commenced personal inspections of his officers dress. At 1800 hours the CO was guest speaker at a dinner given by the Chamber of Commerce, Ste. Marie de Beauce. F/O’s Henderson, Pottier, Dechene, Smith and their wives also attended. There were 101 personnel on sick parade during the month of February. This was made up of 70 airmen and 31 airwomen.

1 Mar 57

The CO, COpsO and CAdO left for St. Hubert for practice flying. S/L AE Kelly CTSO assumed temporary command of station. Station North Bay requested Station St. Sylvestre to take charge of funeral arrangements for F/O Y Houde. F/O Houde was one of two aircrew officers lost in a T-33 last November. F/O JM Dechene, SSO detailed as funeral liaison officer.

4 Mar 57

A funeral party under command of F/O J Cline, attended funeral services in Quebec City for F/O Houde. The services commenced from Marceau Funeral Home with burial being made at Ste. Catherine de Portneuf, PQ.

5 Mar 57

The CO was admitted to Ste. Foy Hospital for medical check-up and minor surgery. S/L RE Churchill assumed temporary command of the station. Completed A for P #50/56 to install terrazzo base floor in the 11 showers stalls in Barrack Blocks "B" and "D".

The CO is still in the Hospital.

The CO is still in the Hospital. Two officers of 432 Squadron Bagotville arrived on one day’s TD. The officers on cross training were: F/L JL Abercrombie and F/O RS Lake.

8 Mar 57

The CO arrived back on the station at 1700 hours. The CO, CAdO, COpsO, CTSO, PAdO and F/O Mills were guests at an Airman’s Mess Dinner. Cocktails preceded the dinner at 1830 hours. Seven Reserve Officers arrived on weekend training. Completed A for P #14/56 for construction of garbage can stands for Protestant and RC Schools, Guard House, Supply Section, Admin Building and Education Building.

Successful Search and Rescue exercise took place involving the locating of a parachute dropped from the air.

Mr. DC Murray, CGE arrived on TD to visit the Radar Section. Four officers from 416 Squadron arrived in for one day cross training. These officers were: F/O’s RC Gervais, DY Bamford, JRB Hamel and DA Ruttan.

The CO and F/O PD Mills proceeded on cross training to USA Bases at Limestone and Bangor, Maine. S/L RE Churchill assumed the duties of Acting CO.

Mr. D Murray, CGE and ten civilian Tech Reps of SR NCO status arrived to carry out an overhaul of telecom equipment. Completed A for P #54/56 for installation of a 650 gallon water tank for the Central Heating Plant.

The "Crying Towel" was brought out of moth balls today and displayed prominently as the usual promotion list was released. The units list, a fairly substantial one, was as follows: To FS: Sgt.’s L Chartre, E Power and W Dragomir. To Sgt. A/Sgt.’s J Moors and R Poirier. Cpl.’s R Cairns, R Meade, R Anderson, J Dubuc and J Dixon. To Cpl. A/Cpl. GD Jerowsky, LAC’s RS Bulman, ER Cyr, WT Whalley, JJ Dalpe, MJ O’Doherty, TJ Girard, JJ Moreau, JG Houde, JL Lacroix and DA Wilson.

There were 81 personnel on sick parade during the month of March. This was made up of 50 airmen and 31 airwomen.

Interior wall finish completed. Movable partitions now being erected. Rough plumbing, heating and electrical completed. Installation of fixtures underway. Overall completion 75%. Estimated completion date May 57.

Stage II to Rec. Hall (Pool)

Interior wall and ceiling asbestos board application completed and painting underway. Ceramic tile on site installation to start upon removal of scaffolding used for painting. Installation of pool equipment just started. DCL to request contractor for a price on increase in capacity of electrical service. The underground cable may be changed from the specified to direct burial types RWU, TWU or alusheath, without conduit. Overall completion 75%. Estimated completion date May 57.

Extension to Combined Quarters

Building practically completed. Will be boarded by CEO upon completion. Overall completion 99%. Estimated completion date 29 Mar 57.

1 (One) Bay Fire Hall #60

Application of Gyproc completed. Asbestos board application in equipment rooms near completion. Rough heating being installed. Rough electrical and plumbing completed. Overall completion 78%. Estimated completion date May 57.

ME Extension (7 Bay) #18

Steelox completed. Overhead doors erected. Hoist installation started as well as rough plumbing, heating and electrical. Overall completion 60%. Estimated completion date May 57.

Exercise Chancelight X took place. This unit controlled seven pairs of fighters making a total of 22 attacks on the faker force.

The Officer’s Monthly Mess Dinner was held this date. G/C RW McNair, Sector Commander, 1 ADCC was guest speaker, other in attendance were: W/C Anderson, COC, S/L O’Boyle, CO Sherbrooke Aux Squadron, F/L Cameron, Sherbrooke Aux Squadron, F/L Lafreniere, A/CO Three Rivers Aux Squadron, Major Simmons, CO, Captain Griswold, COpsO, and Captain Charbonneau, Executive Officer all of USAF Base Caswell Maine. Completed A for P #9/55 to provide a commercial power connection to the 250 KW diesel alternator bus-bers on the switchboard in order that:

  1. Diesel power may be fed to the townsite if commercial power fails.
  2. The Main Building may be fed by commercial power in a serious emergency affecting all diesels.

CO and COpsO on TD to ADCHQ. S/L AE Kelly CTSO assumes duties of Acting CO. 17392 Sgt. N Jorgenson, Steward, NCI i/c of Central Warehouse departed on posting to RCAF Detachment Fort Nelson, BC.

CO and COpsO on TD to ADCHQ to attend an Operations Conference at COC. CO also on staff visit to ADCHQ prior to AOC’s Conference. Clothing parades for month of April were quite heavy, average in dollars and cents for each clothing parade was $600.00. 67 Personnel were on sick parade during April. This consisted of 55 airmen and 12 airwomen.

CO attending AOC’s Conference. S/L RE Churchill Acting CO. The revised CR system went into force today in accordance with AFAO 59.00.00.

CO on TD. F/O Collins, SOGT, ADCHQ and F/L Bjorhdahl, SOVME ADCHQ arrived on staff visit.

The CO returned today from his trip to ADCHQ. Among the signals received this date was the CO’s transfer to USAF Air War College, Maxwell Field, Montgomery, Alabama. W/C JL Lecomte is to be incoming CO. Both transfers effective in August.

Multi people arrived on TD for ECM trials. The personnel concerned are: Dr. Hunt, NRC, Mr. Woodend, ADCHQ, Mr. Patterson, Mr. Kenney, F/L Kirby AFHQ, F/L’s Bateman and Wolfe, ADCHQ, F/O Wood, Lac St. Denis, F/O H Wortley, Senneterre, F/O Grey, Edgar. Also Mr. Bob Mousseau and ten civilian Tech reps arrived on overhaul duties.

CO, COpsO and CAdO proceeded to St. Hubert for practice flying. Acting CO is S/L AE Kelly, CTSO. Operation wise Exercise "Ball Hawk" was carried out. Overfly of 44 B47 aircraft operating ECM. Intercept and tactical action by this unit.

13 May 57

CO, COpsO, CAdO still flying. F/L Beattie, SO Photo, F/L C Brooks, Sec ADCHQ and Mr. Rashed Kahn, AFHQ in on visits. Cpls. Pelletier and Zieger arrived on TD from Station Bagotville to conduct Ground Defence Passive Lectures for unit personnel. Mr. Pettigrew and Mr. Blogg of Canadian Arsenals arrived on a technical visit.

J Nasholtz, A/1C R Lloyd and A/2C F Bishop arrived on TD from 766th AC&W, Caswell, Maine. TD is for purpose of cross training. FS RS Powell, Cpl. DJA Phillips, Cpl. RA Prior, Cpl. SJ Lajoie, Cpl. MP Baker, LAC RD Harrison arrived on TD from 104 "K" Flight St. Hubert for radar trials. CO at Granby PQ to be guest speaker at a Civil luncheon.

FS ER Power FW wrote the Group 4 and Supt. examinations. F/O JH Cline presided. The CO attended the arrival and reception of the Tri Service Attaches and Commonwealth Service Advisors at Val Cartier. W/C Dupuis represented the RCAF in the reception committee at Ancienne Lorette Airport. Following a tour at Val Cartier Camp the guests were entertained at a Mess Dinner at the Camp.

Some 28 Amateur Radio Operators from Quebec, Three Rivers, Montreal and surrounding area were given a tour of the unit under supervision of the CAdO. A reception followed in the Officers Mess.

Dr. JJ Conn and Mr. JA Senez arrived for observation of Exercise Chancelight XI. Exercise "Tiger Mate". Overfly by 19 B52 aircraft. Normal intercept and tactical action taken.

The CO in company with F/O HC Burrill proceeded on TD to Caswell and Charleston USAF Bases on cross training and liaison duties. S/L AE Kelly Acting CO.

New Construction

Administration Building #16

Interior finish completed and painting underway. It was noted that the birch plywood used for the dado is of lower quality than that which is acceptable for this type of wood. DCL field had prior to the commencement of painting, notified the contractor of this fact. It was concurred in that many panels required replacement. DCL will press contractor to correct. Overall completion 95%. Estimated completion date Jun 57.

Stage II to Rec. Hall (Pool)

Interior wall and ceiling painting completed. Ceramic tile installation in the pool underway. Installation of pool equipment completed. Overall completion 88%. Estimated completion date Jun 57.

Extension to Combined Quarters
