    COMMENTARY

    Commanders:

Lt. Colonel Paul D Warner departed on the 5th of February with Major Robert N Nottoli assuming command of the 640th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron. Colonel James A Darby, Commander of the 37th Air Division was present for the ceremony and inspected the troops.

    Operations:

The Operations Section participated in nine training exercises during this quarter, six were simulated and three were live. The Operations Dias was completely revamped, and during this time the operations mission was carried out in a small room under the BSSC dias, with one Plan Position Indicator and one Height Range Indicator scope. The complete operation mission requirements were fully carried out. On 31 March the completed dias was placed back in operation and the equipment for the required mission was in place and fully operational.

    CEM Maintenance:

The CEM Maintenance Section won the 37th Air Division Maintenance Achievement Awards for the fourth quarter and the calendar year 1968. A Depot Level Maintenance Team arrived in February to completely overhaul the radars and associated equipment. This team was Canadian Marconi Company office in St. John’s, Newfoundland. During the overhaul and with the reduction of the operational requirement, two AN/UPA-35 Plan Position Indicators were declared excess and turned in. In March, the Canadian Marconi Precision Equipment Maintenance Team arrived to accomplish the required calibration checks of the test equipment. This was accomplished on station and three items had to be sent to the depot for repair and return.

    Station Support:

During this quarter there were thirty-two cargo/personnel flights from Goose AB to 640th AC&W Squadron. The outbound cargo was 12,483 pounds, of which 2,754 pounds was mail. The inbound cargo was 51,417 pounds, of which 3,621 pounds was mail. There were one hundred and fifty-nine personnel on these flights, of which fifty-nine arrived and one hundred departed. Supply furnished adequate support for the operation of mission requirements.

    Civil Engineers:

During this quarter the Eight Air Force Mobile Maintenance Team from Goose AB arrived on station for the construction of the Operations dias and to install new lighting fixtures in the barracks. The construction was completed on the Operations dias and the construction started for the BSSC on 31 March 1969. The Civil Engineers Section had many extra hours of overtime for the removal of snow and to repair windows and other areas damaged by storms and high winds. Five fire drills were conducted during this quarter. All were successful and valuable training in fire fighting procedures were realized.

    Recreation Services:

The squadron participated in the local hockey league. Several volleyball teams were set up by various sections and the leather craft and fly-tying was conducted in the special services work shops.
